And I won't put the blame on Stephenie here; in fact, it's hard to say WHO to put the blame on. Whoever had one of the manuscripts leaked it, and it's very unfortunate, and I can see why she is upset... because those 264 pages would have taken a long time, and for not even half of her book to be leaked out, for her fans to have read so much already, would take away a lot of reading when or if the actual Midnight Sun comes out... so I do understand her pain here. I think she was careful and like she said, only distributed the manuscripts to those who she trusted, and unfortunately, it was leaked.

I know this happens to almost every author, it's inevitable that things are leaked onto the Internet before release... for so many books, it's happened, and it's happened for the Twilight series as well. I think she's more upset because Midnight Sun wasnt even finished and so much of it was passed onto the internet. But I also feel that every author should know this... that there is always a chance of their book, no matter how they try to keep it secured, being leaked before it should be. I think she's just really upset right now, but I do hope that she re-considers and starts writing it again... I saved the draft from her website and just skimmed some if it; I know if I start reading, I won't be able to stop... and I saw the ending, and I wont say anything but it really makes you want to read more to see how the rest correllates with Twilight!

I hope she finishes Midnight Sun... her fans are with her! I was really shocked when I saw this news, and hope things will get better...!

They are both famous authors who have written books with HUGE fan following..Both have been in situations that are almost alike...(eg.the leak) Stephenie should have acted more professionally like JKR did and she should have atleast thought about her fans and not deprive them of the book because they are not at fault! And don't you think she should have been a little more careful about her manuscripts now that her books are famous and people will do anything to get their hands on her manuscripts? She should have kept them to herself till the book was finished atleast...

SMeyer is being hailed as the next JKR. I think that gives enough grounds for comparison.

I'd understand she was really upset if Midnight Sun was say the next part in the series but it isn't. There are no events in the story that we don't already know so I don't see how it spoils it for her. There are no surprises in the book and to me, it seems kind of redundant. Her characters should have a character arc they follow so it's immature to say that feelings control your work. If we went by that principle, Harry Potter series would never have been written, much less published, because Rowling's mum died and she was drowning in debt. Sure MS got leaked and it's sad. Meyer should get over it. I'm kind of getting the feeling she's creating buzz for Midnight Sun. When people get really despondant over the fact that MS isn't releasing, BAM! it's in the markets showing how "strong" a person Meyer is. Thus, she gets public sympathy as well as cash.

OMG Anu! I love you! I totally love reading ur posts and for the past couple off days I have been reading them and seeing ur responses to the comments!

I also hate the fact that Meyer is being hailed as the next JKR, to be honest it gets to me, though like you said if she is been called that then a comparison should been done!

Personally and as a reader Meyer is no where near to what Rowling has achieved in terms off literature!

Yes! i also agree that this is some sort off publicity stunt and there are no suprises in Midnight Sun because we know what will happen!

I would not be suprised that in a couple off weeks or so we get a news saying that she has changed her mind! and will be publishing the book! (gosh...i sound really mean) šŸ˜†

Enjoy reading ur post and comments, especailly your reviews!

Hmmm... I read your replies, and I just feel that assumptions and blamings shouldnt be made if we dont know the whole story. We don't know who she gave the manuscripts to, how it got leaked, but it did, and she's upset, and I feel we should respect that... no matter how upsetting it is that the book is (as of now) being 'cancelled'. That's just my opinion, though. Without knowing what all happened, I dont feel it's fair to say "She should get over it", or that "She should have been more careful with the manuscripts"... but that's just me. 😊 Will edit my post in a bit.

We may never get the entire story. You can't take Meyer's word for it because it's going to be her version of the events not an objective eye to what really happened and the media, in general, is biased. What we know is - Meyer was distributing the unfinished, unedited manuscript like confetti. Outside of her editor/publisher, we know she gave it to Robert, to Catherine instead of having dinner with them to fully explain the character of Edward. That can be categorized as carelessness on her part because apart from the fact that you just don't share your manuscript with anyone besides your publisher, this manuscript was worth millions and it would be easy for any member of the Twilight Movie crew to get their hands on it. Sure, you can blame the person who placed it on the internet but ultimately, the leak started from her. I completely respect that she's upset - she has a right to be but to cancel a project that was promised to fans long like a year ago? That's exaggerating what happened; It was leaked - it's not as big a deal as Meyer's making it out to be. However, instead of punishing the person who leaked it (and she does know who it is), she's choosing to punishing her fans, who read something readily made available to them via the internet.

Sorry for nitpicking but no one was comparing the storylines. We were (or at least, I was) comparing how two very rich authors of two very popular YA books - in the States, if nowhere else - reacted when put in the same situation. While Rowling took it like a professional author and a mature adult, Meyer threw a tantrum: Instead of punishing the person responsible for leaking it (i.e. Suing him or her over copyright, which should have been done by Litte, Brown officially since the script belongs to them.), she's punishing the very people who are probably going to pay for her children's education.
And I don't comprehend your reasoning for why we can't compare Twilight and Harry Potter. They have many similarities. For starters, they are both literary pieces -- YA books and extremely popular money-making franchise in U.S.A. Their primary demographic are teenagers, ages 12+ although younger people do read it. They both have cultural influence - I'm sure I wasn't the only person who bawled their eyes out on their 11th birthday and a lot of fangirls rave about how they asked their boyfriend to munch on ice before kissing them. From the multiple icons I've seen, Jacob Black can be likened to Siruis Black from the Potter Series - shaggy, likes motorcycles, dog/werewolf. If you dig deep enough, you can even compare a dragon and a rat, so why can't these books and their authors be compared? Why should Meyer be immune to comparisons?

^ I'll reply more clearly in a bit, but the reason why I questioned the comparisons is because all I ever hear is Twilight being compared with Harry Potter only... so that's why I was wondering about that. Yes, there are similarities between the two of them, but overall, both are so different... and that's why I wanted to know why with every issue, a comparison between the two must be made. I myself am guilty of comparing them at times, but I don't like to compare between which one is better, the books or the authors, etc etc... am I making sense? Like I said, I'll edit more later!

Having read both series in careful detail, you are right that both series should not be compared as Harry Potter will have literary value and go on to become a classic literary piece like works of Austen, the Bronte sisters, Charles Dickens, Lemony Snicket etc. Although the Twilight series had an inetersting plot, Meyer's style and standard of writing is nowhere near the calibre of Rowling's and neither was it written for literary value-but for pop culutre (I was scoffed at by a lecturer for trying to find any literary value in the twilight series). Apart from the first book twilight, the stories and concepts of the rest of the series meet many flaws (like why a male vampire's reproductive system works fine when a female vampire's doesn't? i.e why can a male vampire have kids and not female vampires?) So literally (excuse the pun) these authors and their books are worlds apart.

Apart from that, when questioning the professionalism of the 2 authors Rowling is a true professional. after the intial leak incident, she took extra precautions to avoid a repeat. The seventh book was delivered to stores on the day of release at 6am and not a minute before!! When you are producing a film or album or book which is much-anticipated it is almost gauranteed most people will do anything to get an 'advanced' copy. Best-sellers like Tamora Pierce, Janet Evanovich know this well enough to not give sentimental one-of-a-kind copy to 'friends'.

To me, Meyer seems like a 'tortured artist"-type. Like Leo DiCaprio, a perfectionist, very sentimental and overtly sensitive to crticism and things not going to plan. However, in today's world of instant access and communication, such incidences do occur and in the western world it is unheard of that an author writing an anticipated best-seller share's his/her work with anyone else but their editor and publisher!!!!!
