Episode 25

Aao Saheb was bursting with excitement as the preparations for Kalyani's Dohale Jevan (Godh Bharai) ceremony were in full swing. Pallavi and Anupriya followed all her instructions carefully.

At the appropriate timing fixed by Panditji, Kalyani was made to sit on Aao Saheb's trademark swing which was specially decorated for the occasion. Kalyani was wearing a simple saree, no heavy jewellery but was glowing with the beauty of an expectant mother. A not too heavy flower garland was placed around her neck.

The guests were limited to only the families of Malhar's colleagues and a few of Kalyani's college mates and colleagues. Starting with Anupriya, Pallavi and Swara, one by one, the ladies marked her forehead with a small dot of haldi kumkum.

Kalyani held the pallu of her saree spread open in front of her while they took turns to fill it with the coconut, betel leaves & nuts, fruits and dry fruits. She was fed a bite of the sweets and both mother and baby were blessed by sprinkling rice grains on her head. After the ceremony and lunch was over, Kalyani went in to change from the saree and rest for a while.

When it was time to leave, she caught his hand and said, "Malharji, suniye na, mujhe nahi jaana Aai ke ghar, hum apne ghar chalte hain."

"Hmm…. Chahta toh mai bhi yahi hun, par Aai aur Kaka hamara intezaar kar rahe hai aur humne Aao Saheb se bhi promise kiya hai na."

Moksh came in, "Aai ! Baba! Aazoba wait kar re hain. Jaldi chaliye."

"Chalo..… bulava aa gaya."

They took Aao Saheb's blessings and drove towards Sarthak's home. Anupriya welcomed her daughter home, "Kalyani mai bohot khush hun ki tum yahan mere saath rahogi. Roz tumhare pasand ka hi khana banaungi."

Malhar put Kalyani's bags in the room where she and Moksh would be staying. He didn't want to go back to an empty home but he had to leave.

As if sensing his thoughts Sarthak put a hand on his shoulder, "Malhar, tumhe akele wahan rehne ki zaroorat nahi hai, ye tumhara bhi ghar hai."

"Kaka…" he hugged Sarthak. "Mushkil hoga mere liye, lekin Aai aur Kalyani ke in palon ko mai cheenna nahi chahta hun."

Sarthak smiled at him, "Mujhe lagta hai ki Kalyani bhi tumhe bohot miss karegi."

"Woh to hai, mai roz aaunga usse Aur Moksh se milne."

Malhar was getting ready to leave after dinner, promising Moksh that he would come everyday and stay back during weekends.

Kalyani walked outside with him and as he was about to get into his jeep she placed her palm on his chest, rubbing softly. Feeling emotional she murmured, "Mujhe yahan aapke bina neend kaise aayega? Aap yahan kyun nahi reh sakte?"

"Kalyani, mai kaise reh sakta hun Kalyani. Iss samay har maa apni beti ko saath rakhna, use pamper karna chahegi. Dekha na, Aai kitni khush hai. Ek do din me tum settle ho jaogi."

"Aur aap?"

His eyes twinkling with mischief, he riled her up, "Mai? Are mai to mahinon baad chain ki neend sone wala hun. Pura bistar mera, na tum laat maarogi aur na hi tumhara beta."

Kalyani blinked her eyes processing what he had uttered, "Matlab Aap… aap mujhe miss nahi karenge? How rude Malharji !"

Gritting her teeth, she said, "Jaiye, wahin akele, aaram se rahiye. She gave him a wicked look thinking in her mind, aap ko toh main sone hi nahi dungi.

Malhar knew her too well and smiled to himself. "Bye Kalyani, Aai ko jyada mat sathana", he said, earning another angry glare. "Bye." she said and went in after he had left.

Malhar was walking around alone in the house, not liking it's emptiness, missing his wife and son terribly. He didn't even want to lay down on the empty bed, so he rested on the sofa. Closing his eyes did not help and he switched on some music to kill the loneliness. He even contemplated calling Kalyani but didn't want to disturb her sleep.

It was almost morning when Malhar finally fell asleep. The consistent ringing of the phone woke him up. He picked it up groggily, "Hello." The voice on the other end commanded him, "Utiye, exercise ka time ho gaya."

"Kya Kalyani, mai abhi abhi soya hun, aaj khud hi karlo na please."

"Kyun !! aap to chain se sone wale the na, toh kya kar rahe the raat bar?

"Kalyani woh bas maine aise hi kaha tha, mujhe toh neend hi nahi aayi, badi mushkil soya tha."

"Koi bahana nahi chalnewala, utiye aur yoga mat lagayiye warna mai exercise nahi karungi."

"Nahi, ruko, 5 minutes me aata hun." He rushed to brush his teeth and splashed his face with water to overcome the sleep. He then laid out the yoga mat and the phone in front of him, copying whatever Kalyani did on the other side.

After the session, Kalyani disconnected the call and Malhar fell flat on the mat immediately dozing off again. He was late for work that day and many other days too.

Days passed and as Kalyani entered into the ninth month, they had fallen into a new routine. As promised, Malhar visited his family every day, spent time with Moksh who also missed his dad. He didn't give up his habit of speaking to his child in the womb. Kalyani was clingy and didn't want him to leave, so he left only after she had slept.

During the latest checkup, the doctor told, "Kalyani, the baby's head has turned downwards. As I had advised, be ready with the bag of essentials you need. You may go into labour any time even before the due date."

A week had passed after the check up and Malhar was now alert that he may have to be ready any moment. Around 1am in the morning, Malhar was tossing and turning struggling to get some sleep when Kalyani called him, "Malharji, mujhe ice cream khaane ka man kar ra hai. Please leke aaiye na."

"Dimaag kharab ho gaya? Iss wakt ice cream kaun khaata hai aur kahan se milega. Subah le aata hun. So jao ab."

"Malharji, yaad hai na aapko doctor ne kya kaha last week, ab mai jo bhi maangti hun, mujhe jaldi dena chahiye kyu ki ab delivery ke liye jyada din nahi hai."

"Kalyani… " he tried to say something but she just continued.

"Mere office ke paas ek 24-hour outlet hai, wahan milega. Mujhe na Belgian Chocolate flavour chahiye, nahi…..lemon sorbet…...nahi rukiye ! cookie dough flavour."

"Ek baar decide karlo tab tak subah ho jaayegi, phir le aata hun."

"Decide karna mushkil hai Malharji, aap teenon le aaiye. Main intezaar karungi."

After half an hour, Malhar was outside Sarthak's home with all the flavours that she wanted. He called her but there was no response. He had no choice and he rang the bell. Sarthak opened the door stifling a yawn and was shocked to find him outside. Anupriya who was behind him, asked, "Malhar !!! Tum iss wakt? Sab teekh hai?"

"Aai, Kaka, sorry maine aap dono ko disturb kiya, Kalyani ne phone kiya tha mujhe, use ice cream khani thi, isliye…" he showed them the packet in his hand.

"Are Deva ! Kya karun iss ladki ka? Andhar aao tum."

Anupriya went in to check on Kalyani and signalled them to come and see her sleeping soundly. Malhar rolled his eyes, "Dekha Aai, meri neend haraam karke khud kaise so rahi hai."

"Main ye ice cream fridge me rakh deti hun, tum bhi ab yahin so jao."

In the morning, Kalyani woke up to do her exercise and was happy to see her husband beside her. "Malharji, aap kab aaye?"

He scrunched his eyes open, "Yaad karo Kalyani, tumne mujhe neend se jagakar kuch maanga tha? Aur jab mai lekar aaya to tum khud so gayi."

Only then she remembered asking for ice cream. She rushed and took it out of the fridge eating it as though she had seen it for the first time, closing her eyes in delight as she relished the tastes. As she was eating, she felt a sharp pain in her back. Again, she felt it and it was a bit more intense than the previous one. Slowly she started feeling pain in her lower abdomen too. She dropped the cup she was holding. She tried to get up from the sofa and felt another bout of pain,

"Aah……" she shouted "Malharji, bohot dard ho raha hai." Malhar rushed to her side and held her, gently rubbing her back to give some comfort. She experienced another pain and a pressure in the lower region. She got up from the sofa and felt some fluid beginning to trickle between her legs, "Malharji, mujhe bathroom jaana hai, Aai ko bulayiye please."

He carried her to the bathroom and alerted Anupriya who rushed there. Malhar waited outside while Anupriya helped her daughter. She came out and told that Kalyani's water had broken, "Malhar samay ho gaya hospital jaane ka. Gaadi nikalo."

Within half an hour, they were at the hospital and Malhar was doing the necessary paperwork while Kalyani was being prepped for the labour ward. When he reached there, the nurse was wheeling her into the room. "Mr Rane sirf ek hi jan unke saath reh sakte hain, aap ya unki maa, aap log aapas me decide kar lijiye." she explained to them. Before they could answer, Kalyani held Malhars hand, "Mere pati rahenge mere saath. Sab inki wajah se toh hua hai" she glared at him as a new contraction waved through her body.

Malhar was embarrassed but the nurse just smiled and guided them into the labour room and went about her work. She monitored Kalyani's contractions and told, "It will take at least 6 hours for her contractions to become closer to each other. I'll come in to monitor regularly. Try to relax Mrs Rane."

"Relax bolkar chali gayi, pagal nurse, itne dard me koi relax kaise kar sakta hai."

"Ssh.. Chup ho jao Kalyani. Aankhen band karlo." He asked her to turn and began rubbing her back slowly. "Aapko kya, dard to mujhe ho raha hai na, aapki kaam toh choti si thi. Uske baad koi pareshani nahi, hai na?" she shouted at him.

Malhar kept quiet as she vented out her painful moments on him, trying his best to comfort her. After four hours, the time had come and the doctor along with a team of nurses entered and they guided Kalyani through the process. Malhar wiped the sweat off her face and kept talking soothingly into her ears, reminding her to follow the breathing technique. Her nails dug into his skin as she struggled to push and Malhar wished he could take the pain she underwent, his eyes tearing up.

"Just a little more Kalyani, I can see the head." the doctor kept instructing her. As she gave one mighty push, she bit her husband's hand out of the sheer pain and at last the baby's head popped out and slowly it's body slipped out into the doctor's gloved hands. She held the baby out to Malhar, "Congrats Mr Rane. Beti hui hai. Would you like to hold her before we clean her up?"

Not hesitating a moment, Malhar went closer, held his hands out to hold his tiny daughter and as though the little girl sensed her father's touch, wailed her lungs out. He took her closer to Kalyani who was tired but she smiled looking at her husband and the baby in his hands. The nurse then took the baby for cleaning. Malhar held his wife's hand and bent down, kissing his wife's forehead, "I love you Kalyani, thank you for this beautiful bundle of joy."
