Kunal Verma: Mamma's Boy

Kunal Verma aka Yug of Tujh Sang Preet Lagayi Sajnacould not celebrate his birthday (On July 6) this year because of his injuries, but he got the best gift from his mother. Kunal spoke to us in detail about his birthday and his show.

About his birthday he says: "Unfortunately I had an accident. I went on a beach and a high wave threw me from a rock where me and a couple of my friends were standing. I injured my back, knee and got scratches on my elbow. I was bedridden for a bit, so my friends did not call me and I too did not throw a party. I was shooting for my show on my birthday, then in the evening I went for dinner with my family. My mother gifted me a very precious and nice statue of Lord Ram which has diamonds; it was the best gift I could have ever got."

Kunal is planning to throw a party for his friends some time soon this month.

Kunal did not get nominated for the recently held Star Parivar Awards, about which he says, "I will not comment on it. My fans have been telling me that I should have been nominated. I got tons of mails saying that but I do not work for nominations or for awards. For me love of my audience is more important. The day that stops, I will stop working. Even though I did not get nominated, I went there for my friends. I never attended any award function, so I wanted to go there, but I did not feel jealous. May be next year I will get nominated."

About Tujh Sang… taking a leap
"It was a small leap of five years to add a twist to the show and it should be the last one hopefully. I was not in favour of many leaps. I do not want to play an older guy. Our show is not well promoted and there was a rumour that it will be pulled off. However, we got an extension now and that is why we took a leap."

Kunal also thinks that his show is getting a good response despite no promos.

Kunal has been getting offers from outside but he is under a contract, so he wants to concentrate on this show. He was recently seen in a cameo in Kitani Mohobbat Hai.

We wish Kunal a speedy recovery.

Prerna Wanwari and Shreysth in Tuj Sang..
    10 July 2009 | 12:58am 1 Comments

Salil of Kitani Mohabbat Hai and Kadambari of Bandini will be seen in cameo roles for an episodic in Star Plus' Tuj Sang...

Salil of Kitani Mohabbat Hai and Kadambari of Bandini will be seen in a different avtar in Balaji Telefilms' Tuj Sang Preet Lagai Sajna on Star Plus.

According to our source, "Prerna Wanwari (Kadambari in Bandini) and Shreysth (Salil in Kitani) will be seen in this Friday's episode, wherein they don the Banjara look. They will be seen in cameo roles and will be present for an episode".

Vikas Goopta, Creative Director, Tuj Sang confirmed this news and said, "The duo will be seen in a song sequence which has been beautifully shot. It's a scene where this group of banjaras is singing a song. Vrinda (Pooja Bose) and Rajveer (Sandeep Baswana) see this situation of the banjaras who sing all day to earn their daily wages. They watch their struggle in life and seek inspiration from them to move forward in their marital life".

We talked to Shreysth aka Salil of Kitani Mohabbat Hai, and he said "I enjoyed shooting for this particular sequence. We the banjaras sing the whole day, but at the end of the day have not earned a single penny. We are very hungry and tired, but still do not lose hope. The character is very much different from what Salil is, and I loved the look given for the role. I would personally want to thank Ektaji and Vikas for giving me this look and role in the show".

There is more happy news for fans of Tuj Sang as the repeat telecast of the show will now be seen at 6 in the evening.

    A few years ahead…
    Vandana Shukla/ Hill Road Media

Taking a leap ahead in time has become so common in TV shows looking to add a new dimension, that it's no longer a surprise to see stars age overnight. Indya checks out shows that have recently taken a leap…

Tujh Sang Preet Lagai Sajna, STAR Plus
The show has moved forward by three years. Yug (Kunal Verma), Vrinda (Pooja Bose), Rajbeer and Bharti have become very good friends. Yug will see the futility of hoping to get Vrinda back in his life because she is madly in love with her husband, Rajbeer. Meanwhile, Teji is now married to Frieda and their story track provides some comic relief to viewers.

    Bollywood rehashed

Television can't seem to have enough of Bollywood. After playing popular Hindi tracks in the background, modelling characters on film stars, now soaps have gone overboard by airing rip offs of popular movies.

For instance Ekta Kapoor's Kis Des Mein Hai Mera Dil and Tujh Sang Preet Lagai Sajna have similarities with Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and Saudagar/Parampara respectively. Uttaran is also based on Mira Nair's Kamasutra. The only difference being the poor-rich girls' friendship story has child protagonists. Bidaai is inspired by Shahid Kapoor-Amrita Rao starrer Vivaah. Even Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai is said to be inspired by an old Rajshri film.

In the past too Ekta has tried to recreate Bollywood magic with Kahani Teri Meri and Koshish Ek Asha. The former was based on Devdaas, while the latter was a copy of an old Jeetendra film. Even Smriti Irani tried an old formula with Waaris, which was a remake of Amitabh Bachchan's Sarkaar.

NDTV Imagine will soon launch Seeta Aur Geeta which is a remake of Hema Malini's hit film of the same name. A few years ago, B. R. Films had made a daily called Kamini Damini with Sridevi in a double role which was also inspired by Seeta Aur Geeta.

Why do channels which take programming cues from the West for
reality shows get so dependent on Hindi films? "It is happening full-on and it's time such mass copying stopped," says Sandiip Sikcand, creative head for dailies like Maa and Bandini.

According to Sandiip, the trend started with the advent of dailies. "As finite stories were turned into never ending soaps, people started running out of ideas. Hence the easiest way out was to lift stories, characters and plots from popular films," he adds.

Shailja Kejriwal, senior creative head of NDTV Imagine, is of the opinion that in a medium of storytelling inspiration comes from any source. "Bollywood borrows from Hollywood and South Indian films. The original source of Ghajini is Memento. An idea can come from anywhere but weaving it into an engaging story needs creativity. In the Indian context, Bollywood is a tried and tested formula of entertainment and a reliable reference point," she says.

According to Sony's creative head (fiction) Sanjay Upadhyay, the modus operandi is simple. He explains, "Either take the core thought from a film and build drama around it or take character/s from a hit film and put it in a different milieu."

Sanjay also blames it on the lack of good writing talent. "Most of the writers lack depth. They source stories and characters from popular films. But it's not their fault solely. Viewers' easily relate to stories and characters they have seen in films," he adds.

Sandiip admits to copying plots and characters. "I have done it. But then I was asked to do it. If you do it correctly it is not difficult to churn out 300 episodes," he says. But the problem, according to him, is that lately it's happening so blatantly that people are feeling cheated and getting alienated.

Sooraj Rao, till recently the creative head of Tujh Sang Preet Lagai Sajna before he quit the show two weeks ago, admits that Bollywood is an obvious reference point for soaps. "But slowly we are heading towards originality. Obviously it will take some time," he says.

    Yeh show filmi hai!

    SHILPA BANSAL , TNN 27 July 2009, 12:00am IST
Email Discuss Bookmark/Share Save Text Size: |
While small-screen stars are making the transition to the big screen, it seems the scripts for Bollywood movies are finding their way to TV.
    Still from Bhaskar Bharti and

Whether it's plots or characters, Hindi films seem to be providing some much-needed masala to television serials. The plot of Star Plus' Tujh Sang Preet Lagayi Sajana smacks of Subhash Ghai's film Saudagar. Jeevan Saatthi Humsafar Zindagi Ke on Colors is reminiscent of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.

Even the latest shows, Bhaskar Bharti, Ladies Special and Palampur Express on Sony Entertainment Television, have traces of Mr Ya Miss, Life... in a Metro and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, respectively.

But TV producers dismiss the allegation, saying there's no deliberate attempt to copy films. "There are a few ideas around which stories are built. So, the plots may seem similar. But that doesn't mean we're copying Hindi films," says Roshan Abbas, producer and conceptualiser, Palampur Express.

"It's possible that as the show moves on, you'll find it similar to Iqbal. That's because Indian cinema has explored so many themes that TV serials are looking like reflections of them. Hollywood films are so big that they can't be adapted as serial scripts. Bollywood should come up with such plots. Even Balika Vadhu was initially written as a film, but since that didn't work, it was turned into a serial," explains Roshan.

Some claim the stories on TV go beyond the original scripts. "We may take the idea from a film, but while a film is over in three hours, a serial goes on for a long time and needs a new twist every day. The presentation has to be strong enough to keep audiences from saying, 'I'd rather pick up a DVD and watch the movie'," says Deeya Singh, producer, Bhaskar Bharti.

Archita Biswas, scriptwriter of Tujh Sang Preet Lagayi Sajana, agrees. "Since Tujh Sang Preet Lagayi Sajana and Saudagar are about warring families, people might think the serial is based on the film. But we've introduced various new angles that weren't in the film."

Sapna Babul Ka... Bidaai, a hit serial on Star Plus, has increasingly begun to look like Vivah. But ask Rajan Shahi, the producer of the show, about it and he says, "If we blatantly copy, the shows would look forced. We have to keep viewers' interest alive or TRPs could fall."

As for Seeta Aur Geeta on NDTV Imagine, the producers have clarified that they have officially bought the rights to remake the film into a serial. "Our target audience is the youth and there are old films they wouldn't have watched. So, there's no harm in remaking them into serials, as long as the originals are given credit," says Sunil Bohra, producer, Seeta Aur Geeta. But will it get the same response as the film? "Our audiences are very entertainment-friendly. They will enjoy anything and any number of times if it comes for free," smiles Sunil.

    Shows that need to end
    Sonali Joshi/Hill Road Media

Viewers often have to suffer the trauma of watching shows drag on endlessly. Here are some shows Indya thinks need to say their final goodbyes:
Showing 1 of 5 images Previous Next

Tujh Sang Preet Lagayi Sajna: It replaced hit show Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki last year. The show's love story seemed interesting, but it lacked good actors. As TRP ratings were low, the show was shifted to an afternoon slot, but it didn't do well there either, even after the story took a leap.

    Strings Attached, with Love...
    06 August 2009 | 1:10am 9 Comments

The day that celebrates bro-sis love is once again here, to greet us all with the same fun n love! Here is Telly Buzz offering you a Raksha Bandhan Special...

It's the day of Raksha Bandhan again! While some guys happily put forward their wrists, some try to avoid all the chicks in the lane! Of course, blame it on the girls who use Rakhi as a weapon to ward off unwanted suitors. That's simply not acceptable right?

Move aside the jokes, Raksha Bandhan comes to your genuine rescue if you are a wishful someone without any blood brother or sister. We Indian chaps have way too good traditions!

Lets do some rewind. Originally, sisters tie the silk thread (Rakhi) on their brother's wrist and pray for their well being and brothers promise to take care of their sisters, but nowadays as neighbours and co-workers celebrate the festival, Rakhi has become more of symbol of peaceful co-existence, blurring all the differences of religion or language.

Here is Telly Buzz talking to few of the telly stars on the importance of Raksha Bandhan in their lives and much more...

    Abigail:

How important is Raksha Bandhan for you?
Very important and also it's a very beautiful festival.

Is it a boon or a curse?
It's a boon for girls. Obviously, we get loads of gifts and cash!

Do you have a Rakhi Brother, who is it?
Yes. Abhinav Kapoor is my Rakhi brother.

Have you tied rakhi to any of your co stars? Do you follow the custom even now?
Not yet, but this year I will tie Rakhi to Gautam Gulati, the one who played Teji in Tujh Sang Preet.

    Harshad Chopra:

What's Raksha Bandhan to you, a boon or a curse?
It has always been a boon, as brothers get to give gifts to their sisters and thus express their feelings of love and gratitude.

Do you have a rakhi sister, who is it?
Yes I do have one in my home town and also when I was in hostel in Pune, I used to get Rakhi tied from a Bai(janitor).

Actually I used to feel very lonely in my hostel and used to miss my sister a lot. So it just happened that one year, I asked the bai to tie the rakhi that my sister had sent me. Then I just continued doing that every year.

Have any of your co-stars tied rakhi to you? Do you follow the custom even now?
Nope. But Priya Arya and Neha Mehta are very close to me and treat me as their younger brother. They advise me a lot and are always there for me.

    Sushant Singh Rajput:

What's Raksha Bandhan to you, a boon or a curse?
Obviously a boon. I have four elder sisters and I am the only guy among them so I always feel lucky.

Do you have a rakhi sister, who is it?
No I don't understand the concept of Rakhi sister. I have four sisters and so have enough responsibility on my shoulders. I don't want to take the risk of making a Rakhi sister now.

Has any of your costars tied rakhi to you? Do you follow the custom even now?
No not at all and I don't think it will ever happen in the future too (smiles).

    Sparsh Khandchandani:

How important is Raksha Bandhan for you?
The feeling behind tying a Rakhi is important as it's the feeling of love between a brother and sister.

Do you have a Rakhi Brother, who is it?
No I don't have any. I tie rakhi only to my cousin brother.

Have you tied rakhi to any of your co stars? Do you follow the custom even now?
Last year I was not shooting on rakhi day. But this year definitely I will tie Rakhi to Armaan Bhaiya (Karan Singh Grover).

    Puja Bose:

How important is Raksha Bandhan for you?
It is a very important festival. Brothers and sisters staying far away from each other due to work or any other reason get an excuse to meet. This is a good time to show your love and care.

Do you have a Rakhi Brother, who is it?
No, I don't have any. I tie Rakhi only to my cousins.

Have you tied rakhi to any of your co stars? Do you follow the custom even now?
No I haven't tied rakhi to any of my co-stars.

    Avinash Sachdev:

What's Raksha Bandhan to you, a boon or a curse?
Obviously it's a boon. It's celebrating a very cherished relation.

Do you have a rakhi sister, who is it?
No, I don't have any rakhi sisters.

Has any of your girl costar tied rakhi to you? Do you follow the custom even now?
Yes they had approached to me but I didn't get the rakhi tied. That's because I don't believe relationships are formed so easily.

    Raj Simaria:

What's Raksha Bandhan to you, a boon or a curse?
Definitely a boon despite the jeb katna (cash drain). I love Rakhi festival. It's a festival where brothers and sisters get to show off their 'sweet' relationship. We enjoy a lot.

Do you have a rakhi sister, who is it?
Nope, I don't have a rakhi sister yet.

Have any of your costars tied rakhi to you? Do you follow the custom even now?
No, none of my costars have done it so far. But this year Antara will tie Rakhi to me on the sets.

Mihika Verma to enter Tuj Sang..
    07 August 2009 | 10:06pm

    • Star Plus' Tuj Sang will see yet another new entry in Mihika Verma...

There are more problems in store for Yug (Kunal Verma) and Vrinda (Pooja Bose) in Star Plus' Tuj Sang Preet Lagai Sajna, with the entry of another girl other than Bubbly (Garima Bhatnagar) in the life of Ashish (Mayank Gandhi).

According to our source, "Mihika Verma who played the scheming Ashlesha in Kis Desh will make her entry in Tuj Sang soon. She plays the character of Bhumika who comes in as the love life of Ashish. The future track will see Ashish and Bubbly getting married, but once Bhumika enters the house, she will start creating problems".

When contacted, Vikas Goopta Creative Director confirmed the news and said, "Yes, Mihika is entering the show. She will spice up the story, by creating problems in the house. Vrinda and Yug will together solve the problem, that's all I can say now".

We called up Mihika, but she simply refused to talk saying, "I can talk on my role only after my character is introduced in the show".

Mihika's entry will be aired sometime next week.. She was also seen in Balaji Telefilms' Kitani Mohabbat Hai.
