The temple was a place of silent prayer, sin was confessed, forgiveness asked for, help pleaded for. It was a step closer to every God, every Goddess.
It was here Uma stood next to Meera, his eyes shut tightly, his prayers only for one person, his Kanak.
Kanak and Santosh climbed the stairs slowly, Santosh put her hand on her lower back, pushing her forward so more people could fit in.
Meera opened her eyes, she reached for the sindoor box and pulled off the lid, Uma opened his eyes slowly and turned around, his shoulder hitting the sindoor box as he knocked into Kanak behind him, his arm stretched out, his hand capturing her upper arm, the sindoor landing in its rightful place, her forehead
Kanak lifted her hand, her fingers brushed against the red powder and she looked up at her hand, then to the right, her breath hitched, she blinked fast. Two years had passed since she had saw him, she couldnt take her eyes off of him, the man she loved, her first love, also her last, stood before her.
His dark chocolate eyes lowered, taking her in, he took a deep breath in, allowing her unique chandan scent to surround him
Kanak pulled her arm back but Uma couldnt let her leave this easily
He raised his hand, touching her cheek, she flinched at his touch, so foreign to her after all this time, yet so soothing.
He lifted his other hand, cupping her other cheek, he pushed her hair away from her face, unable to believe she was here
Kanak lifted her hand, resting it upon his shaking one
"Whats going on" Meera shouted, she yanked Uma away
Meera lifted her hand to slap Kanak, Uma's fingers curled around her wrist
"Tumhari himmat kaise hui" Uma shouted
His eyes darkened, his voice dropped "kisee ko usake haath mein uthaane ka adhikaar nahin hai"
Meera's hand dropped from his hold as if she had been burnt
"You are my husband, she is nothing but a government officer, how dare she put her eyes on you, how dare she touch what is mine" Meera shouted
Kanak couldnt take it anymore, Uma was defending her yet he had married Meera.
"Please, stop" she begged, raising her hands and putting them together, as if in prayer
"I cant do this anymore" she sobbed
Uma's face softened "Kanak"
Kanak shook her head, hot tears rolling down her cheeks "Please, just dont"
Uma shook his head, she couldnt leave him now, he reached out but she leant against the pillar, allowing her body to collapse into it
"Zindagi barbaad kar de" she muttered sorrowfully
"Maine tumhe pyaar kiya, and you married someone else"
Meera turned Uma back around to face her "Is this true"
Uma gulped painfully and nodded, Meera pulled her hand back, gasping
Kanak swiped at her tears with the back of her hand
"aapni kaha tha ki aap kabhi bhi vaadon nahin todenge"
"Kanak I was helpless"
She shook her head "Helpless, you" she laughed "I was helpless, it was my birthday and I sat, waiting for you to come, then I got the news that you married her" her finger pointed toward Meera, her throat burning from the shouting
"I was heartbroken, thats right" she stepped forward her finger pointing against his chest "You broke my heart"
Uma faltered back as she raised her hands shoving him, then grabbed his collar
"Yeh saacha pyaar tha" she lowered her head, her shoulders shaking from the crying
She let out a guttural sob as she brushed her hand against his stubble "kya aapni kabhi mere baare mein socha hai" the look in her eyes so insecure, breaking his heart
"I cant sleep, cant eat, how dare you make me love you, main kush tha, before you came into my life, why , godamnit, tell me why" she fell onto her knees, weak from the crying
Uma pulled her back up slowly "Because I love you, I do, I know you dont believe me, but I do" he lifted her hand, putting it on his chest "Feel that, my heart only beats for you, meri majboori thi, to save Suman, but dont cry please, I can live with anything, but not your tears, hate me if you must"
Kanak rested her hand on his cheek "Then why didnt you tell me, I could have helped"
Uma held her hand tightly "It isnt always your job to save me, to help me, sometimes I have to do things alone"
Kanak wrapped her arms around his waist, her head on his chest, finally she could be home again
Neither realised how long they had stood there for, but the sky was now dark, Meera and Santosh had dissapeared but Kanak couldnt make herself let go, so scared this would all be a dream and he would dissapear again
Uma pulled away slowly, Kanak's eyes lit with fear
Uma kissed her forehead "Its okay, im just taking you home"
He lifted her up into his arms and made his way down the stairs
Kanak didnt want to return anywhere where he would not be with her
"Can't we just stay here, watch the stars"
Uma stopped and set her down, he pulled his blazer off and led down, she led next to him, her head on his chest, he pulled his blazer over her arms and held her closer to him
They spoke about what they had done over the two years, he spoke about how proud he was of her and how far she had got, she told him she was happy to know he had got his dream even if she wasnt by his side
Uma looked down at Kanak who had fallen asleep in his arms
He kissed her hair and closed his eyes, happy to be home, with Kanak
Because wherever she was, it was home.
He noticed even with all these stars, she was still the one that shone the brightest.
It was not to long after when the loud noises woke them up, Kanak looked up at Uma, she pinched her arm and hissed in pain
Uma raised his eyebrow "What are you doing"
"Making sure its not a dream" she admitted, blushing
Uma laughed "I always dreamt of you"
Kanak slapped his arm, "shh, people can hear"
He tucked the lose strand of hair behind her ear, stroking her cheek with the back of his hand
He leaned in, "Uma, people are watching"
"Please, its been two years"
Kanak nodded, she couldnt deny wanting to feel his lips against hers again
Her eyes closed as his lips touched hers, soft and sweet
Kanak rested her hand behind his neck and pulled him slightly closer, falling deeper into the kiss
They pulled back, breathless, resting their foreheads on eachothers
"I love you" she whispered
"I love you" he replied
And just like that, what was meant to be, had happened.
Love was once again the strongest force!
So I know we will probably have to wait ages till Uma and Kanak meet again, but I would like to imagine it happened a little something like this
