One popular theme in nonfiction is that of betrayal. Dishonouring a bond of trust between two parties or more. The theme exploits the elements of lack of awareness of reality. Characters show signs of gullibility, are victims of unseen treachery, and deceit, misunderstandings. Betrayal in the storyline constitutes a twist in the plot. Characters undergo psychological trauma where the sentiment of one's trust being wounded becomes evident. Betrayal may be in political terms where party or national issues are at stake. Where to dishonour and betray one's nation, condemns the culprit as a traitor. Friendships too can be marred by an element of duplicity, when one discovers reliance amongst friends falters. However betrayal , that brings to surface infidelity and unfaithfulness in love, is a popular premise used in nonfiction , especially where a formal contract such as marriage is seen to be breached. Today's episode for me centres around the protagonist Uma Shankar, who finds himself let down by his newly wedded wife. Alongside we also have the Rathi's monument Kanak sweet shop larger than life itself, yet its surrounded by much intrigue, misunderstanding, and, betrayal around it.
Yes babbsa is the ideal husband that epitomizes of lifelong fidelity. His words, along with the rest of the family's sweet talk makes the tough old matriarch Bhabo come around. Verdicts and decisions of disposing of the shop are reversed with immediate effect. Only it appears so ironic , when Kanak on the train , confesses the truth around the shop. Bhabo has been duped. Treachery has come about. By some guile the demon Uma Shankar now owns Bhabo's soul, the confectionary shop. now to me the Rathi's who gel together as one joint family .Seem to me plagued by internal betrayal as well. Many truths are concealed from each other, thus within themselves, many lies and cover ups divide them. Communication lines within the family are out of use. Many misconceptions are in bred. When I saw Kanak on the train, I wondered why she didn't take her brothers into confidence the day Gabbasa turned up at Pushkar. Babbsa may be forgiven due to his Alzheimer's but Kanak decided to embark on the task herself. May be she misjudged Ved and Vansh wouldn't let her go on her..? its interesting though babbasa with his illness still trusted Kanak. I think the biggest let down is bhabo herself! holding a secret from her family that she has sold her shop. Perhaps her mind itself has betrayed her by playing tricks upon her.. It's obvious the younger Rathi's are all , unknowingly withholding vital bits of information to shield each other and most of all Bhabo from heart ache. To me they are in the business of hiding things from each other, deceiving each other. To me things would have been less complicated than they are today, had they come clean with each other..
Uma walks into his bedroom, emotionally , spiritually cheated by one he married by force, yet he made up to his mistake by showering her by the greatest honour he could. Funny this betrayal that he faces, now makes him confess where he wronged Kanak and how he made up to her. It's tragic to see Uma here. One who married for love but more so on the basis of blessed coincidences involving Kanak and him, all that he believed were the consent of the deities. Now he faces the music as it were, painful symphonies of being alone once again. Maasi walks on egg shells as she literally echoes this imposing figure's sentiments. He faces her not , as his eyes reveal a glazed expression of deep smarting. Yes he felt cheated badly and it has nothing to do with the fact that a woman spurned his emotions . For Uma a devout devotee of Lord Shiva bled emotionally because she shook his rock firm faith in the scriptures. With a heart riddled by the Kanak's guile , he bitterly cries out she has brazenly, let down her own personal faith too. She has been audacious enough to challenge the will of the deities. But somewhere within his disciplined anguish, Uma's faith in the love story of the lamp and the wick still lights up his dark, dismal world. For when Maasi delegates Gabbasa to hunt out and bring back the fled daughter in law of the house back to stop her from victimising other decent men. Uma puts a stop to her well meaning thoughts! and sincerely leaves the matter to fate.. Kanak went with her own free will. with her own free will she needs to return. He confirms , if the gods will it ,we will unite again, if not then so be it! The last bit sums up Maasi's thoughts. that it his gullibility that duped him and led him to this ..how with her soft touch ,she stabbed him in the back!
As for Kanak she never really thought twice about betraying Uma Shankar. She went through the whole sham of her forced marriage to him with a defined purpose in mind. To get Bhabo's shop papers back! Even after the revelation that the shop really belongs to the demonic Uma Shankar, her spirits to expose his fraud soars to new levels.. So sweet is the wound she aims to inflict upon him, with her gentle hands that she cannot wait to set foot on her soil. No, reservation of how she is dressed up deters her not. Yes she confesses the truth, in somewhat tongue and cheek manner.. she is dressed as a customary bride! Only as part of role play. If she speaks the truth then why does Kanak falter to take off the tell tale signs of the bride.. ? is she betraying us by implying that she too believes in saga of the lamp and the wick??
At the registry office Mr.Bansal obliges her in every possible way as a special favour to Arvind. Many acts of duplicity and treachery unfolds before her eyes through the medium of cctv coverage. It's in black and white that a mysterious young woman, who seems Palomi to me.. gets Bhabo's thumbprints on a pack of legal documents! In the back ground a man in a kurta! distinctive!! Only one man Uma Shankar! yes that which was hidden is now revealed! A smug Uma signing for legal possession of Bhabo's shop! thumbprints which were as meaningless and insignificant as Kanak is to Bhabo.. also take note that kanak wants mr.bansal to keep Ved out of the shop issue... why so?? Kanak struggles and gasps like a fish without water! a sale done deceptively! What a sham! Illegal! But not quite so , as the registry office only over sees sale between two parties happens without either of them being coerced confirms Mr.Bansal .. is not Bhabo being coerced to give thumbprints by deceit?? Uma Shankar and the woman worked hand in glove to cheat Bhabo! Helpless stands Kanak ... she was all set with her gentle hand, to stab Uma Shankar in his heart! Such a cheat! not once does she regrets in betraying his trust! half given the chance she will continue to seek further occasions to express her disloyalty to him.. and to her forced marriage!
To me the episode whereas reminds us of how families too betray each other by hiding ,or not saying enough about matters of mutual interest . On the other hand some suspected truths are confirmed and one so called godly man is confirmed to be the true image of the evil one!.. precap: when one is lonely, beaten and alone, one especially daughters ,can only think of their father! Fathers who are infallible! A father is beyond death to a daughter!! Kanak's soul cries out for help to Suraj... gentle footsteps, then a gentle hand on Kanak's shoulder... how can a father not beckon to the call of his little girl... Kanak.. Kanak? she turns and looks over her shoulder.. a face that made her ..hamlet 53. 26.5.17
