Ekta back on Sony with Khwaish
Anil Merani
Ekta Kapoor's serial Khwaish that is being produced and aired on Pakistan TV is now telecast on Indian television. A report...
alaji Telefilms has got the distinction of being the first Indian production house to make a serial for Pakistan television, (PTV). Khwaish which is around 15-20 episodes old across the border will now air in India on Sony from July 16 on the 7.30 pm slot. Khwaish is a story of two Indian Muslim families settled in the beautiful desert city of Dubai. It talks about the love between Afreen (Priya Ashok Bathija) and Kabir(Sumeet Sachdev). Both get married and seem to be living a very contented life, until tragedy strikes and Afreen is forced to marry Kabir's younger brother, Azaan. Ekta Kapoor said at the launch press conference "I have always been attacked for not doing a Muslim social. Hope this beautiful venture satisfies my critics at least on this point." Sumit Sachdev who is a part of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi ( yes, Gomzi is back) and had earlier done Karam Apna Apna is quite happy with this new role. He says "Kabir is a very positive character (calm, simple and down-to-earth) and quite similar to me. I play the dashing foreign returned elder son of Shanawaz (Indraneel Bhattacharya) and Zarin Khan(Anju Mahendru)." This architect turned actor does not have any problems playing a Pakistani, "We share a similar culture, don't we? The female lead, Priya was first seen in a small role in Kyunki... as KT's friend. Nivedita Basu, creative head, Balaji Telefilms said, "This is in keeping with the Balaji tradition of choosing news leads from the pool of actors who have done smaller roles in our other shows." Ekta added that they deliberately did not choose somebody established because she might not have had the time to go to Dubai for long schedules. Priya described Afreen as a kind-hearted girl, who can never see others in pain "My, character is very supportive to her family and is looked upon as the 'son' to her father, Hadi (Ragesh Banwarilal Asthanaa)," she explained. The third peg of this triangle, Azan is played by Pakistani actor and model, Yasir Shah. The production house has deliberately not taken major Pakistani TV stars for the role because according to Nivedita Basu, "Pakistani actors are few in number and they will not be able to find time for a daily like Khwaish". "Even the Dubai unit of Balaji is in-house, for we are more comfortable with someone who knows our style of working" said Basu.

When asked to comment on the 7.30 pm time slot Ekta said, " It was the perfect time for house wives in smaller town and cities to watch the show. People in such places are off to bed by 10 pm." Being a Muslim social, Khwaish will be in Urdu and Balaji has taken special care to make sure that this beautiful language is presented correctly on screen. A special tutor has been appointed who will oversee the shooting to prevent any bloomers. Khwaish will be the Muslim counterpart of the K shows with a lot of religious symbolism. Ramzan and Bakri Idd will be celebrated with pomp and gaiety. "However given the delicate political situation between the two countries, no controversial topic will be dealt with," stressed Ekta. As for the costumes which the Balaji shows are known for Nivedita said, "Since this show is about a modern Muslim family, Afreen will not be shown in a burqa, but if she goes to a mosque, she will surely wear one". Priya added that her character will always be dressed in beautiful, yet simple outfits. When asked as to what the response has been to the show in Pakistan, Ekta quipped that it was too early to comment as the TRP system there is not as advanced as in India and so it would take some time for the ratings to be out". However the queen of Indian soaps was confident that Khwaish will be a major hit, for Indian shows are a big rage there any way. "Pakistani viewers will now have a chance to see legitimate Indian programmes, which otherwise ran rather through illegal means." Nivedita added that the influence and power of our soaps can be judged by the fact that purely Indian stuff like the bindi and saree have become very popular in Pakistan, post satellite invasion. Though the serial is based in Pakistan, it has been shot in Dubai as Indian production houses are banned from shooting in Pakistan. Like all other Balaji presentations, this show is also being shot on an elaborate scale, with a lot of out door locations. As for the story, Ekta promises "A major twist in the story around the 30th episode. The initial episodes will be used to connect the characters with the audiences."

Ekta to hold telly awards
By: Shaheen Parkar
July 20, 2007
Though still in the initial stages, Kapoor says it will definitely happen

Latest In Her List: Ekta Kapoor
'More the merrier' seems to be the mantra in the crowded television awards scenario. The latest entrant is TV czarina Ekta Kapoor herself!

The soap queen is in the process of organising a television awards show and a formal announcement from her production house Balaji will be made shortly.

When asked Ekta admits, "Yes we are planning a TV awards gala. At the moment I don't know when it will be held. But we are definitely planning it."

Upbeat

Buzz about the Balaji awards has been doing the rounds since the past couple of days.

Though Ekta does not want to spill the beans yet, an onlooker adds, "Ekta is planning to launch her awards in December and has approached G S Entertainment to manage the show. Jeetendra is also extremely upbeat about the idea of having the awards."

The entry of Balaji in the small screen awards firmament is bound to raise curiosity. At most awards dos, Balaji shows and stars dominate the scene and often their no-show can mar the gala.

Interestingly, Vikas Kalantri along with telly actress Pooja Ghai, who floated their production house Gold Leaf Productions, are also organising an awards gala called the Gold Awards, it is slated to be held in Mauritius in September.

The duo has tied up with telly actor-turned producer Anuj Saxena's Maverick Productions.

Besides Ekta's awards and the soon-to-be-launched Gold Awards there are currently:

Anil Wanvari's Indian Telly Awards

Sansui TV awards

Anu and Shashi Ranjan's Indian Television Academy Awards

Jatin's Priya!!
[18 Jul 2007]

The grapevine is abuzz with the talks of Jatin Shah, who plays the character of Raunak in Star Plus' Kasturi, and Priya Bathija aka Afreen of ' Khwaish' going steady for a while now. Though the two actors have been maintaining a good friend tag and not making anything open about their love life but their body language and craving for each other says it all to anyone who cares to observe.

As Priya Bathija says, ' I like everything about Jatin. He respects me and we enjoy each other's company. We are not dating currently, but I don't know what tomorrow holds. I have been in Dubai for the last five months for the shooting of Khwaish and we have not met up, but we are in touch. In Kyunki… I played Mouni Roy's friend as was plump then. After that I lost nine kilos by walking everyday for forty five minutes, I stopped eating rice and oily food and increased intake of water and vegetables.'

Priya Bathija is playing the character of a middle class girl Afreen in Khwaish who shoulders the responsibilities of the household after retirement of her father without worrying about her own future. With this serial Ektaa Kapoor's Balaji Telefilms company will be returning to Sony channel.

Sony Entertainment Television has roped in Ekta Kapoor to make five serials for them, in the hope that Balaji serials will help revive their slipping position. Ekta readily agreed. But allegedly, her clause was that Sandiip Sickand, the ex Balaji creative director, who joined Sony, be thrown out of the channel. Sony agreed and Sandiip reportedly had no choice but to put in his papers.

Call it coincidence if you wish to, but the fact remains that while he was with Sony, Ekta did not give a single show to the channel. and now Sandiip's departure marks Ekta's return on Sony with Khwaish, but on her terms. 'Ekta's taking her revenge,' is what everyone says in the tv industry. It is said that Ekta had a closed door meeting with Sony's head Kunal Dasgupta about doing five serials for the channel but she wanted Sandiip out of those shows, which apparently led to Sandiip's exit. To get Sony back on the feet, Dasgupta agreed.

However, Sony's business head Albert Almeida denies this and says, "Sandiip had one-year contract with the channel. But after completing 11 months he decided to move on to explore other creative options." sources reveal that Sandiip wanted to clear the air with Ekta and thought bagging Khwaish was a great start. But once he heard about Dasgupta wanting him out, he is trying reportedly to coax Ekta into giving him his job back.

Ask Ekta about the same and she is non-committal, and all she says is, "yes, I am a difficult and rude boss. I believe TV is my domain and it is my responsibility to give the best content and TRP to the channel and the viewers. I have my own style of working and I do lose my temper especially when I feel that people are not working as hard as I am. as for Sandiip, we are fine."

Footloose and fickle

Nach ke dikha! Sandiip Sikcand
We recently spotted Sony€™s Sandiip Sikcand exiting Sandip Soparrkar€™s dance studio in Bandra and asked him about it.

Apparently, he has enrolled for salsa and jazz classes and says it€™s something he has always wanted to do but never got the chance.
And may we add that August 14 will be his last day at Sony. On the eve of Independence Day, he starts afresh with Balaji (according to the grapevine), and/or theatre and films. So what€™s his next move? Your guess is as good as ours! (yawn!)

No saas- bahu serials, this time!

Ekta Kapoor inks deal with INX group's entertainment channel

Anil Thakraney

The television czarina is all set to expand her empire. Ekta's Balaji Telefilms has just struck a mega deal for a soon to be launched Hindi entertainment channel from the newly formed INX Group. INX is headed by ex Star honcho Peter Mukherjea.

So will the tie-up involve equity participation, or does the deal purely involve content generation? Ekta Kapoor explains: "Well, it's not a financial tie up, but it's still a tie up in a sense, because of the volume of work involved. The deal involves producing a couple of serials and the satellite rights for a fixed number of feature films we make in the future. The programmes we produce for INX will also include reality shows and telenovellas. And since it's a new channel, we will also offer them production support."

But she denies the serials would be clones of the family dramas she produces for STAR. "No saas-bahu serials. Given the brief that the channel will offer fresh programming, we will make serials keeping their vision in mind."

INX entertainment is set to launch by the year-end. And Ekta does not see the new arrangement strain her ties with STAR in any way. "No, this does not affect our current arrangement with STAR. Having worked with Peter Mukherjea in the past, this feels like homecoming," she says.

Incidentally, the INX bouquet of channels will include a Hindi entertainment channel, an English news channel, a music channel and city-specific channels.

Sumeet Sachdev talks about his new show Khwaish, speaking in Urdu, having no issues with being the second choice for the show, and more to A.L. Chougule

Q Tell us about your role in Khwaish.

I am playing Kabir, the eldest son of Dubai-based Pakistani business tycoon Shahnawaz Khan. Kabir is full of life, soft-spoken, warm and responsible. He is the most loved person in his family.

Q. What is the show about?

Essentially it is a love story set against the backdrop of two Pakistani families. But you will have to watch the show to find out how they meet and fall in love.

However, the show is not just about love and romance. It has all the spicy ingredients like grey as well as comic characters who are a part of all family dramas.

Q. Does Kabir have shades of grey?

Kabir is a positive character, very responsible and respectful towards others.

Q. Will the class difference between the lovebirds be the cause of friction in the love story?

I suppose so. The grey characters in the serial may use it as an alibi to create trouble in their love story.

Q. How was the experience of shooting in Dubai?

I am really happy shooting in Dubai because I am away from the hustle and bustle of Mumbai. We shoot for 12 hours and after that you are free.

In Mumbai even if you work for five hours, you don't feel relaxed because you are occupied with 10 other things.

Q. Since this is an Urdu serial did you have problems with the language?

Language is bit of a problem and I was skeptical about it in the beginning. But we have a dialogue coach to help us with words and pronunciation. It's difficult but I am managing to do a decent job.

Q. Serials with Muslim background, with an exception of one or two, have not done well on TV. Do you think Khwaish may find it difficult to get high ratings?

I don't think so. Khwaish has a different feel and texture to it. I think good content works, irrespective of the backdrop of a Hindu or Muslim family.

Q. Wasn't Ejaz Khan Ekta's choice to play Kabir?

Was he? I think he was supposed to play another character in the serial. It really doesn't make any difference to me if 10 people were considered to play the role before it came to me. I am happy doing it.

Q. What has happened to your role in Kyunki?

I really don't know. In the last three months I have shot for Kyunki for only five days. The character is nowhere to be seen in the current track that's going on with the introduction of new characters. But Gautam will definitely come back, though I don't know when.

Q. Are you done with your role in Karam?

Yes, it was a cameo. It lasted for about two months and is now over

Ok, here is some more gup about the telly awards scene.

Apparently, the younger lot of Balaji actors cannot don their dancing shoes at award functions other than ones organised by Ekta Kapoor.

In fact, the new lot is now under an exclusive contract barring them from venturing out until they complete at least a year at Balaji.

For those who want to see the fresh lot of Balaji stars in action, you'll have to head to Turkey (or wait for the televised event).

That's the venue where the queen of soaps Ekta Kapoor is most likely to hold her event!

< name="selZoom" value="100" ="">
Tell us something about the award function you are planning to conduct. We've been planning this for some time now. We'll be tying up with another award organisation, so it will be quite a big affair. Who are you tying up with? I can't reveal much at this point except that it will be a big film production house. In about a month, we should have a name for our awards. How will you ensure that your awards will be any different from the existing ones? Our awards will be a commercial venture.. they won't look like poor country cousins of the film awards. We want authenticity. As for the jury, it won't comprise only of people from the television and film fraternity, but from all over. When do you plan to launch the awards? Sometime between December and January. Recently, it was rumoured that you'd sent out an SMS to all your actors, instructing them not to attend any other television awards.. Look, firstly, I don't sms my actors directly. What's out in the papers isn't correct. But yes, I did send out a mes- sage to some of my actors, informing them about the awards that I plan to launch. As far as attending other award functions is concerned, my actors have been given the option of tak- ing time off during September or October. But it's impossible to let them go on leave for more than a couple of days.. because most of my actors are doing two shows. Will you take action against actors who attend other award functions? Of course not! I can only request them to be loyal to our awards.

How to make a Balaji soap?

There is no doubt about the fact that Balaji Telefilms is the most envied and successful soap churning factories in our country. Even though there are many pretenders to the throne, absolutely no one has been successful in dethroning them.

On the contrary, the wannabes have accepted their style of functioning as nothing less than a 'genre'. We wanted to make things somewhat simple for the countless aspirants and decided to put together a common recipe using some very clichd and trusted formulas that go into the making of a Balaji style soap.

1.The K-Title: This is the first and the foremost requirement needed to make a successful Balaji soap. Never mind if your title runs into several hundred letters or sounds very weird, but it has to start with a K, a letter believed to be extremely lucky in the entertainment world here. It's also important to register the title before anyone else ( read Ekta Kapoor, Karan Johar, Rakesh Roshan etc) takes over your lucky name.

2.Docile Bahu: Once the title is finalized, pick up a bechari looking, suppressed and homely middle class girl from the market. Never mind if she is dumb and can't act, because she doesn't need to. All she needs to do is, shed gallons of tears in every second scene.

After all, she has to play a good docile woman who takes all the possible injustices in the world lying low. She will be hardly into revenge as she believes in the concept of forgive and forget.

3.Spineless Son: Once you have a heroine in place, you also need to get a male counterpart who would be ready to suspect her all the time and will believe everyone in the world except her. However he would never take centerstage and would play the perfect second fiddle to your good old ideal heroine.

He would be involved in making her life miserable and causing her unhappiness by an untimely death or an extra marital affair. Being good looking, fair and handsome is not a criterion. In fact, even if he is middle-aged with salt-n-pepper hair a la Ram Kapoor and Ronit Roy, with a track record of flop films, it would not lessen his appeal.

4.The Vicious Vamp: If there is a hero and a heroine, a vamp is a must. Otherwise how would the scheming, plotting and planning (the staple diet of soaps) be complete!

One, who is ready to put cakes of loud makeup on her face, colored lenses, artificial eyelashes, stylized bindis, dark kohl and eyeliner, weird hairdos, dark red lipstick etc would be the perfect choice.

She doesn't even need to act, but a unique style of dialogue delivery and a mind sharper-than-Einstein (otherwise, how would she come up with fool-proof plans) is a must. For all that, writers are of great help as they are the ones who would give her the best of the bitchy dialogues.

5.Weirdo Villain: Next in the list of essential ingredients for a daily soap is a very strange looking and weird male villain who would be the right hand to your always-scheming vamp.

He would be sporting the strangest haircuts and worst dressing styles which make him look more like a cartoon character than a human being. He would always be free (after all, he has no other work) to carry out any of the evil plans of the vamps.

6.Sick Minded Writer: Once your key players are in place, you also need someone to give them their activities in order. That's where your script writer comes into action. He would be some one, who would have the best mind to think of almost impossible (mostly unrealistic) twists and turns in your story.

He would also double up as God (almost)here, killing the characters and bringing them back from the grave whenever he gets stuck with the story. A writer need not be a very learned person; he can even be a layman with the most imaginative mind.

7.Remarriages, love triangles and illegitimate children: These are the most important aspects of a serial making, without which, the show would never be complete. Love triangles and squares with 3 to 4 persons pursuing a single lead actor is common.

Polygamy can be safely practiced, which gives all the required masala (never mind the law of the land). Re marriages can happen in the family too, like a woman divorcing her husband and later remarrying his younger brother and staying in the same house etc.

Your heroine can keep getting married and separating from her number of love interests, umpteenth number of times. And if there are remarriages, can illegitimate children be far behind? Such children can remain scattered across the globe for years.

But, at a crucial juncture, they can make a comeback into their protagonist parents' lives and turn them into hell. Sometimes these children's sole purpose in life is to destroy the parents who never took care of them and they leave no stone unturned to accomplish this mission of theirs!

8.Plastic surgery: This is one formula which seems to hit a chord every time. The person presumed dead can undergo a plastic surgery (when there is requirement of changing the actor due to date issues or fights, tantrums etc) and come back with a totally different persona! And surprisingly the audiences have mostly welcomed him/ her with open arms. That's why the favorite plastic surgery formula simply rocks!!

9.Formula Director: Having completed your planning, next you need is – someone to execute the so-called drama for you. He is not really the captain of the ship here. He is just a technician who knows how to yell 'action' and 'cut' and how to take the same shot 3-4 times from different angles for effect.

He doesn't even need to explain the actors how to act because actors have their own set of expressions (2 or 3, more than enough in this scenario) which they keep rotating as per requirement.

10.Noisy Music Director: Once your serial is written, shot and edited, you need to use some garnishing in order to make it more delicious. And your music director would be doing this for you. Television music directors don't need to have great knowledge of music. He just needs to know where to put those ear-deafening bangs whenever some actor says some punchy lines.

And now the delicious dish –a Balaji Soap Opera is ready to be served hot and spicy!! – Sneha Hazarika
