Sony To Launch Khwahish,

Ekta Kapoor and Balaji Telefilms is once again in the limelight with the launch of 'Khwaish'. Starting Monday, July 16th at 7.30 pm, this new love story is about a young girl Afreen(Priya Ashok Batija) and her dreams. Are you all wondering where you have seen this girl? Well, Priya made her debut with Ekta's Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi where she played the role of KT's friend.

Khwaish is also about Kabir, a dashing young man who returns home after seven years of living abroad, played by Sumeet Sachdev,. Being the eldest son of the Shahnawaz family, Kabir is very responsible, simple and down-to-earth. Anju Mahendru plays Sumeet's mother in the serial while the good-looking model from Karachi, Yasir Shah plays Kabir's brother. The story starts with Afreen and Kabir falling in love and getting married. Life is a 'Bed of Roses' for the young couple till an ugly turn of events shatters Afreen's life when she has to marry Kabir's younger brother Azaan!! What is the reason behind this emotional decision? All these answers will be unfolded on 16th July when it airs on Sony TV at 7.30 pm

Our Telly Buzz Reporter had a nice time interacting with the stars and the creatives in the Launch Party organised.

Sumeet Sachdev on his role, "Speaking Urdu was a real challenge to me. Gautam was a subtle grownup man, who is not yet matured for his age. Khawish is something totally different, all do a fabulous job helping me out.."

The Creative Director Nivedita Basu quotes, "This serial is about a 'Today's Girl'. We did not have much to work on Cultures as many things are similar. An Indian working woman is the same as a working woman there. The only difference is the language and the ambience. The time slot of 7.30pm was chosen so that we could reach the smaller towns where people are at home by this time." When asked about Iqbal Khan not being a part of this project, Nivedita was quick to answer, "Sumeet has not replaced Iqbal Khan. Iqbal's role is now given to a Pakistani Actor as we wanted Pakistani flavour in the show."
Pakistani Fans are euphoric in seeing their local hero in Balaji serial. "All have now started asking, as to why we did not come up with such a venture long back.. So we are just keeping our fingers crossed till the TRPs show us the result" says Nivedita

Ekta Kapoor when asked about her take on 'Khwaish' says, "Pakistan does not have much of daily soaps. We hired consultants to make sure we are going on the right path. We even had voice trainers to improvise on the dialogue delivery. I didn't want a complete Urdu show, where the girl wears a burkha even when she's at home. Yes, while going to the Darga she will. We are trying to keep this show very real and not exaggerate in any way. I am free from all the allegiations that I only do Hindu shows. To top it all, Sumeet Sachdev is such a big Hit in Pakistan. He has a huge fan following there.. Unfortunately we cannot shoot in Pakistan, but I hope we have a day when our soaps can shoot there, and their soaps can shoot here."

Ekta Kapoor is known to break new grounds in Indian Television… Will Khwaish fulfill all her Dreams and open new platform for Pakistani actors in Indian small screen? As for Ekta it is TRP that will be the decisive factor!!
Watch Khwaish on Sony Entertainment Television starting July 16th, Monday-Thursday at 7.30 pm.

Ekta Kapoor

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. TV tycoon Ekta Kapoor has done it again. She has cut a brand new five-serial deal with Sony Entertainment which is her resident channel Star's archrival.

But Ekta has put a condition to the deal.

Her condition is that Balaji Telefilms's ex-creative head Sandiip Sikcand (who is currently Sony's chief creative director) be kept out of her ambit of creativity.

Contrary to what Sandiip has been telling one and all, about a reconciliation with Ekta, sources very close to Ekta have another startling story to tell.

According to a very reliable source from Balaji, "Ekta had a closed-door meeting with Sony's head honcho Kunal Dasgupta. They discussed many ideas for soaps and also a reality show.

"Ekta agreed to be part of Sony in a big way. But on condition that Sandiip Sikcand be no part of her shows. She clearly requested Dasgupta to keep Sikcand out. Dasgupta reassured Ekta that he might soon be leaving Sony. Ekta said she had no interest in his departure as long as he stayed out of her shows."

"After the promos of Balaji's Dubai show Khwahish went on air, Sandiip Sikcand started calling up Ekta and her associates asking for a meeting with her. Ekta reluctantly agreed and met him. She heard him out. Sikcand also told Ekta that he was leaving Sony. Ekta remained non-committal. She's smart enough to handle all this," adds the source.

Sans Sandiip Sikcand, Ekta has agreed to do five shows for Sony.

According to the above-quoted Balaji source, "By the end of the year, Balaji will have as many shows on Sony as they have on Star. Ekta has been roped in to give Star a run for their ratings."

When contacted about the supposed rapprochement with her erstwhile employee, Ekta laughs and says,"As far as I'm concerned, there never was any fight with Sandiip Sikcand. So there's no question of a patch-up."

Yeah, right!

Ekta agreed to be part of Sony in a big way. But on condition that Sandiip Sikcand be no part of her shows. She clearly requested Dasgupta to keep Sikcand out. - A source

Marking a departure from her earlier shows which were always based in India, Ekta has now chosen to make a story of two families who are settled abroad - Dubai to be precise. The protagonists are Aafrein (Priya Bathija)- a simple but strong minded girl, and Kabir Khan ( Sumeet Sachdeva)- a rich ideal boy. The poor girl meets rich boy, they fall in love and never live happily thereafter.

Priya Bathija as Aafrein in 'Khwaish'

So, what is new? Is the story any different from the scores of Balaji shows on and off air right now, one is compelled to ask. " It's a family drama, and has all the requisite ingredients, " elaborates the handsome lead of the serial, Sumeet. " I have a romantic interest in the show", he continues. " It will have everything that any other show has, the only thing that is different is that it is shot in Dubai."

Is the role different from Gautam of Kyunki? " Gautam has been an intense character, and has played all shades, ranging from good to bad. Kabir is a much more mellow character, one who is always in control, does not rise to aggravation easily," explains the actor.

How has it been working with the new lead - Priya? "It's been nice. We have many newcomers, and a lot of energy on the sets. In fact I have just come back from Dubai and we shot there extensively", gushes the versatile actor. " We had a gala time shooting with many middle eastern artists, and it was an enriching experience." The star cast includes the very experienced Anju Mahendroo, along with many other accomplished Indian and middle eastern artists.

Sumeet Sachdeva

Will the serial touch a chord? Only time will tell. Right now the notes of optimism are hard to miss. Understandably, the frames are going to be glossier, the costumes gaudier ( if that is possible given the shine and sparkle of all the existing garish and flashy Balaji serial costumes), and the drama, heavier.

With all the promised glitterati and glycerine, are we possibly looking at another trp topper ?

Soap
By A.L. Chougule

She didn't take it kindly when Sony Entertainment Television poached Balaji's successful creative director Sandip Sikcand. Neither did she forgive Sandip, the man behind several successful Balaji shows, for quitting her production company for a plum job as Sony's senior creative director. So cut up was Ekta with Sony that she did not even pay heed to Sony's request for a serial to replace her own show Kaisa Yeh Pyaar Hai that wound up about a year ago. With Ekta not responding to their request Sony sourced Kaajjal from K Sera Sera to fill the vacant slot. The Sony-Balaji relations hit such a low that the channel had to rely on other production companies to provide prime time shows.

In fact, ever since Sony lost its no. 2 slot among the general entertainment channels to Zee in early 2006, in the last one and half years Sony's weekday prime time fiction has performed poorly on TRP charts. While the reality genre did well on Sony, prime time fiction that brings the eyeballs and revenue continued to struggle for decent viewership. To make matters worse, Sandip's alleged attempts to poach on Balaji actors with lucrative contracts also didn't go down well with Ekta. She not only ignored Sony but also rubbed her hands in delight at Sony's plight. Sony realised that the precarious state of its prime time fiction band cannot be resurrected without Balaji shows which are still ruling the roost on satellite television's prime time.

Finally, according to sources in Sony and Balaji, the channel's top management decided to step in and talks began at the highest level to thrash out differences. Ekta offered Sony Khwaish and Sony agreed to buy the show though it is already being telecast on ARY Digital channel in Dubai and other Middle East countries. The show which is a couple of episodes old is a family drama based in two NRI Muslim families. Shot in Dubai with Middle East and two Indian actors — Anju Mahendroo and Sumit Sachdev — Khwaish is the story of a middle class girl Aafrein and rich and handsome boy Kabir Khan. The show will go on air in mid-July.

Talking about Khwaish, Sony's business head Albert Almedia says, "It has a huge canvas and universal appeal. We see a lot of value in it and since we have got it at a decent price it's a good show to build our evening 7.30 slot," says Albert. Commenting on Sony-Balaji relationship, Albert says the relationship was always intact. "There was a time when we didn't have a single Balaji show though we have always been in a dialogue with each other and talking about concepts and content. Balaji never stopped pitching concepts at Sony and we are glad that after not having a Balaji show for some time we have found a good show in Khwaish. This is the sign of new options and opportunities opening for both Sony and Balaji." So finally is it peace between Sony and Balaji? Albert says there was no war at all. "There are times when you don't shake hands for certain concepts and there are times when you shake hands. It's all part of business and life," he adds.

Bond with Ekta...
It's that time of the year when Ekta Kapoor literally grabs her stars by the hand and drowns them in tequila shots!

Yep, it's her belated birthday bash and her Juhu abode has been renamed Casino Royale for the July 6 riot.

Madame Kapoor has sent out invitations asking guests to dress in red-and-black and to come shaken, not stirred! Funnily enough, the invite mentions RSVP for a certain Ms Moneypenny.

We're wondering if Miss Moneypenny is Ekta's close confidante, Nivedita Basu... hmmmm.....
... while Balaji is back on Sony
VOTE FOR THE TAJ: Priya Bathija in Khwaish
After a hiatus, Balaji is back with Sony.

Post Kaisa Ye Pyaarr Hai, Ekta steered clear of the channel for various reasons (for those who came in late, she pulled her shows off the channel after former Balaji employee Sandiip Sikcand left her for Sony).

But now, her new show Khwaish will soon air on Sony.

Shot in Dubai and starring Priya Bathija, Anju Mahendroo and Sumit Sachdev, Khwaish is a story of a simple, strong-minded girl called Aafreen.
... cuz Sandiip is on his way out!
Surprisingly, Sony's chief creative director Sandiip Sikcand has been keeping a low profile for some time now.

Post his gall bladder surgery, we last heard he was celebrating niece Snehaal Babbani's SSC results and helping her with college admissions.

But the telly world is abuzz with the story that come August and Sandiip's will be making his exit from Sony, exactly a year after he joined the channel. Apparently, he wants to get into direction and theatre.

Is that the reason Ekta Kapoor is back with Sony? Ooooh...!

Primetime across the border

Ekta Kapoor's first official show in Pakistan is called Khwahish

Subhash K Jha

Ekta Kapoor
It's time for Balaji-deprived Pakistani housewives to rejoice. Cablewallahs needn't fear the police for relaying K-soaps illegally to eager janta either. News goes that Ekta Kapoor has just given them the first official Balaji soap.

"For me, the big moment right now is Khwahish, the soap that we produced in Dubai for the Middle Eastern market. We shot it on neutral land since we didn't want any legal or political repercussions. It's already been aired in Pakistan. So far our shows were being shown illegally in Pakistan. Our Kasauti Zindagi Kay is huge there. Now we've given them the first official Balaji soap. And they love it," says Ekta.

The Pakistanis are really keen to meet Ekta. And she's planning a trip to Karachi and Lahore very soon. She says, "My creative director Nivedita Basu had gone to Pakistan. And she got a very warm welcome. We held a talent hunt for Khwahish in Pakistan. The principal male lead is from Pakistan. And now Khwahish will start to air on Sony in a fortnight."

Meanwhile, Sanjay Gupta and Ekta Kapoor are getting together to produce a reality show for Sony Entertainment. "We've just got a confirmation letter. It's going to be the biggest reality show ever in the country. I can't give out more details right now. But it's like nothing that has been done so far. I've waited so long to do a reality show. Sanjay Gupta and I wanted to get it right before getting it on the road."

The Ekta-Gupta Balaji reality show starts in January 2008.

Priya in a still from Khwahish

A NEW WISH

Khwahish, Balaji Telefilms successful show for the Dubai audiences is making its appearance in India too. The show has artists from India as well as Middle East. There are two Indian actors in the show, Anju Mahendroo and Sumeet Sachdev. Initially, Eijaz Khan was supposed to play the title role of protagonist Kabir Khan, but he backed out, and Sumeet took over. Priya is Balaji's new leading lady. She portrays a strong minded girl in Khwahish. The family drama is about two Indian families settled abroad.

I am not the channel: says Ekta

Soap queen Ekta Kapoor turned up at the press meet to launch her new show Khwaish for Sony despite not keeping too well. Shot in the picturesque Dubai, the soap is the first from the Balaji stable catering to the audiences in Pakistan and the Middle East.

Besides expanding the television software production house's market and catering to public demand, Ekta has another purpose behind the making of the new serial. "I hope to be a bridge builder between these two countries," she said.

Apparently, when Kasautii Zindagi Kay and Kyunki Saas Bhi Bahu Thi were aired illegally in Pakistan, they got higher TRP ratings than Pakistani shows. "Bindis are not common In Pakistan, but after the telecast of Kasautii women started sporting bindis," Ekta informed proudly. "So I thought why should I not make a show for them?"

Besides, Pakistan and the Middle-East, Ekta has her eyes set on other territories as well. Balaji shows were dubbed and aired in Sri Lanka too, but when their popularity increased, the government introduced taxation on them. "It is similar to octroi which is imposed on imported cars so that the Indian market does not suffer," explained Ekta. The only solution in sight was to make shows featuring local artistes, especially for the Sri Lankan audience. However, the scripts are original, executed by specialized creative teams.

After making her mark in Indian television, the tycoon dreams of reaching other milestones. She still needs to come up with "something concrete" for the NRI audience, and a foothold is needed in the Hindi film industry, too.

"Once that is done, I'm also planning to invest in South Indian language films," informed Ekta. As of now, Balaji will concentrate on television software and producing Hindi and Bhojpuri films.

So finally Balaji is going global in a major way? "No, I wish I could say so. At present, I'm only catering to a few south-east Asian countries," replied Ekta.

At the same time, Ekta is slowing disassociating herself with the daily workings of the soaps; she has even credited Kyunki and Khwaish to Nivedita Basu. "I will now act as a trouble shooter. My team can come to me for suggestions and I will intervene for a month only when I find that the serial is not doing well," Ekta declared.

It was Ekta who started off the trend of dailies on Indian television. "I'm not the channel and I only do what the channel demands of me. But yes, I desperately want to change the viewing pattern once again, from dailies to weeklies". That's if housewives, who form a major chunk of her audience, accept the change.
