A lullaby is the first form of music that a child listens to...a calming song used to relax and lull one to sleep. These songs have various ancient origins, but most include modern music. Parents and caregivers have included lullabies in their child's bedtime routine for years. A lullaby is generally based on a 6/8 time signature with a gentle, rhythmic melody.

Soothing the mind from anxiety and stress is key to not just improving the quality, but also the quantity of sleep.Lullabies not only help distract the mind from stressors, but it also creates association with going to bed.

I'm sure, some of you have sung lullaby/lori from Hindi movies to your child. Or some of these loris have a special place in your heart. The best part about these loris is that they never grow old. Here are some of my favorite lullabies in Hindi and mother tongue, Marathi.

Thank you, Mukta for this gorgeous theme and the lullabies you posted.

Nanhi kali sone chali is THE lori for me. I think it might be my favorite lori ever. I think it embodies the essence of a lori with its soft, lilting tune and the promise by the mother to the child that everything is going to be okay - just go to sleep.

I loved the Marathi songs you posted too especially Neej Majhya Nandlala.

There is something so sweet, so reassuring about a lullaby right? Even adults need it!

Here's another perennial favorite of mine:

Song: Dheere se aaja ri ankhiyan mein

Movie: Albela (1951)

Music: C.Ramchandra

Lyrics: Rajinder Kishen

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar (there's a version by Chitalkar too)

Actor: Bhagwan, I'm not sure who the actress playing his sister is - if anyone knows please chime in. Meanwhile, I'll also do some research 😆

Posting this one - because it's as heartbreaking as it's sweet. 😭

How does this song manage to make me cry every time I hear it?

It's the tune , the singing, the lyrics, the actors - everything. Just perfection.

Song: Kanne Kalaimane

Movie: Moondram Pirai (1982)- Tamil

Music: Ilaiyaraja

Lyrics: Kavignar Kannadasan

Singer: K.J. Yesudas

Actors: Kamalahasan, Sridevi
