Harsh Chhaya On the house

An established actor on the small-screen, Harsh Chhaya got recognition in Ajai Sinha's serials starting from Hasratein, Justajoo and now Ghar Ek Sapna. The actor talks about his relationship with Ajai and his journey … on the sets of Ghar...

In Ghar Ek Sapna, Harsh Chhaya is playing the role of Rishabh. A doctor by profession, he is one of six siblings and is like a mediator. Whenever there is problem in the house or anyone needs help, Rishabh lends his shoulder to cry on or is always ready with a piece of good advice. "Mine is a positive role. Everyone has a lot of trust in me. The family wants to see me settled but I have a deeply-guarded secret that I have a wife and a little son hidden away from the family," discloses Harsh about his character that is yet to be revealed to the viewers.

Talking about his conviction about working with Ajai Sinha, Harsh says that he loves to work with Ajai because firstly he is a good human being. Secondly he is a good director with a lot of confidence and belief in his work. And thirdly he is like my 'ghar ka sadasya'. Moreover an artiste is assured that he has a good role. I have always got to play the central and prominent character in all his serials," says the actor who has done Sinha's Hasratein, Justajoo, Samay as well as Astitva. "Since the director did not have a role for me in Dollar Bahu, I didn't feature in the serial," he adds.

About his co-stars, Harsh says it is a very good team and he is fortunate to work with artistes like Alok Nath, Himani Shivpuri, Barkha Madan, and a whole lot of young team. About Kiran Karmarkar, who plays his older brother in Ghar Ek Sapna as well as Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasman, Harsh says, "Kiran follows the relationship in real life too. He is like a true brother and I enjoy working with him in both the serials as we have similar roles in them. While in Ghar .., both of us have positive roles, in Thodi Si …, we are in grey shades and against one another." Harsh is also doing Anurag Basu's Love Story, which is being aired on SAB TV.

A Gujarati by birth, this Delhiite's debut Marathi film Evdhasa Aabhal released recently in Pune to a good response. His wife Sunita Sengupta also makes her Marathi film debut with the film. The duo is also seen together in Ghar .., as fellow doctors. Last seen in Madhur Bhandarkar's Corporate, the actor says he prefers to do serials because he is not getting the kind of roles there. "I am not averse to films but my ghar ka kharcha should get covered somehow," he beams adding that his forthcoming feature films are Laaga Chunari Mein Daag for which he has finished shooting, "The film releases in October/ November", he says adding that he is playing a shrewd businessman in Yash Raj Films' Laaga Chunari Mein Daag opposite Rani Mukerji, and Rajat Kapoor's Mithya is due in October. His other films are Red Swastik and Breaking News.

Having done everything from being a production assistant, copywriter, voiceovers and writing scripts since he came to Mumbai in 1992, at the age of 21, Harsh's first serial was for DD titled Khaali Haath, in which he played a blind music teacher, followed by Zee's Dillagi. But it was with Raman Kumar's Tara he shot to limelight as Jijo. Then there was no looking back for the actor with serials like Darar, Swabhimaan, Choti Si Asha, Nyaya, Justajoo, Astitva etc.

Looking back, Harsh feels he has led an eventful life, literally, as far as his roles are concerned. But an actor is never satisfied and keeps looking for avenues. "I am also looking for that one major role that will lead to an exciting and fulfilling acting career," says the actor signing off.

In keeping with the name 'Ghar Ek Sapna' the show's sets radiate a homely warmth as well

Shooting has resumed on the sets of Sahara One's 'Ghar Ek Sapna', after an extended lunch break

Hurried Harsh
Actor Harsh Chhaya has to rush off to another location. "Sometimes it gets very frenetic-hopping from one location to another but my love for acting makes these things look trivial," says Harsh before dashing off.
That leaves just actors Alok Nath, Himani Shivpuri, Shammi and Barkha Madan on the sets.

Alok's natter
Alok is sitting in a corner nursing a cup of herbal tea and chatting. He says, "I can never dream of going away from television—these are my roots. TV helped me survive when the film industry was not willing to open its doors to me. Also, where are those kinds of films today that require character artistes like me? Nowadays, heroes play every role—from a protagonist to a villain to a comedian. So, why not do television, which is offering me good roles, good exposure and great money?" he asks.

Himani's generous act
Meanwhile, the director announces an emotional scene between Himani Shivpuri, who is shown talking on the phone to the protagonist Kakul (Shayantani Ghosh, not present). The scene takes a lot of time to get approved, much to the irritation of Himani who remarks, "We are not planning an army operation here. Yeh acting hai bhai, it cannot move dot on the script and screenplay!" After the scene is okayed, Himani goes off to her room for a costume and make-up change.

Meanwhile, the spot-boys arrive with two bags full of ice-creams, a treat from Himani to the unit for having got back the baggage she lost at the Mumbai airport, while coming back from Dubai. "I had lost all hope of getting back the baggage when I did not hear from the airport authorities for almost a week after losing it. But the crew members had placed a bet that if I did get it back, I would treat them to ice-cream. Hence the treat!" she explains.

Action!
It's time again for some action as the shot gets readied and Himani, after a chat with veteran Shammi, who was catching a nap until now, sprints off to give the shot. Meanwhile, Barkha, who has no scenes for the next two hours, goes through the screenplay handed to her and then retires for a peaceful nap, instructing that she shouldn't be disturbed!

Known for his different roles and heart felt portrayals, this handsome actor will now be seen in the role of an NRI from America in Ajay Sinha's "Ghar Ek Sapna'. The actor was the lead in Ajay Sinha's last directorial venture, Astitva Ek Prem Kahani, which was comparatively one of the best serials to come of the television kitty in recent times.

So what prompted him to do a cameo in Ghar Ek Sapna? "My financial state", pat comes the reply from the quick witted actor. " The character is good, it's that of an NRI who is trying to woo one of the ladies," Varun further explains.
So does this mean Chabi Hai pados Mein, in which he plays the main lead, might take a back seat? " No, not at all ! I am required to do a maximum of 5 to 6 days of shoot a month, so Chabi will not suffer at all," he replies firmly.

Any chances of the character turning negative? " Possibly, but to be honest, I don't know at this point. In fact, after the initial three four episodes, they will decide how to take this character forward. It's premature to talk about the role right now. Let teh character develop a bit, then I shall be able to talk more about it."

Ajay Sinha's serials are kind of repititive, with the hero always being a pendulum between two females in his life. " True, but the narrative is definitely better," Varun reflects.
We definitely hope to see much more of this versatile actor and wish him all the best for the role.

"I'm more of a bowling-all-rounder" Varun Badola

Varun Badola is tired and bored of talking about his shows and acting. It's not that he's tired of his profession but just that we caught him in a mood when he was keen on chatting only about sports and especially cricket.

Now we all know that the suave actor is a part of the Boxy Boyz gang. Here he briefs us about his team and more in a very sporty chat with Mayur lookhar.

How did you join Boxy Boyz?
Well, I've been playing cricket with my friends in Tellywood for a long time. It was last year, that while we were playing at Cross maidan when we discussed that why not have a sports club of our own.

Which other games do you play?
Cricket is my passion but I play badminton too. However, I must confess that I've hardly played football.

Have you played at a competitive level?
Well, I have played for my college team in Delhi. The likes of Ajay Jadeja, Murli Kartik and Deep Daspugupta graduated from my college.

So, are you a batsman, bowler or an all-rounder?
I'm more of a bowling-all-rounder. I bowl at around 120kph. In the past, I use to bowl over 125kph but putting in those extra yards takes its toll on my body. Usually, I bat in the lower middle order but if we lose our openers quickly, I'm sent in to block one end. I'm a defensive batsman like Dravid.

Who are the players to watch out?
Well, most of them are very talented. Shabir Ahluwalia is a tear away bowler with a round-arm action. He's got a pretty unique run-up. He takes 5-6 gentle steps and then charges on to the bowling crease. I reckon, he bowls around 130kph.
Indraniel Sengupta is our wicket-keeper. I must tell that his batting style is pretty similar to Azharuddin. Manav Gohil is our hard hitting opening batsman.
There are others like Raja Merwani, who was in the Gujarat reserves, when Sachin Tendulkar made his 'First-class' debut.

Who is the captain?
We haven't appointed a permanent captain as yet. The likes of Vikas Sethi, Manav Gohil and Salil Ankola have all donned the captain's hat.

Will you hire a coach in near future?
We do have a bowling coach. I can't recollect his name now. He's a left-arm spinner. In near future, we may hire a permanent coach.

How much time do you devote to practice?
We couldn't practice during the monsoons. Earlier, we practised for two hours on four days a week.

Four days! Does that mean you'll have cut down on your work?
No. We've always practiced in the morning. We usually begin at 7.30 am.

Are you pleased that you'll be playing a negative role in Ghar Ek Sapna?
It's not for the first time that I'll be playing a negative role. In the later half of Des Main Nikla Hoga Chaand, I was playing a negative character. I'm happy playing any character.

You played a negative role in the film Charas and performed really well. Surprisingly, we didn't see much of you after that. Why?
I don't have an answer myself.

Does that mean you haven't got any new offers from Bollywood?
None. (Now that's what you call an honest reply)

Be it acting or dancing, it's the intensity which you put in your work that always catches the eye.How do you manage to keep this intensity level high?
As an actor, it's a part of my profession. After all, that's what I get paid for. Be it acting, dancing or playing sports, I've always given my 100 percent.

Finally, few years ago you had come to a cookery show where you confessed to being an occasional cook. Has that changed after marriage?
I'm still an occasional cook. Usually, I stay away from the kitchen. However, I'd like to say that I'm very good at making kheer.

His Man Friday on the sets tells him that the food is ready. So, I'll let him savor his meal.

Interview with Varun Badola
Varun Badola the very first "Dev" of Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand. Varun Badola is from Uttrakhand. You can see him in almost all channels be it Star Plus, Sony, Zee TV he is spread in all these. Other than this he has also worked in Haasil and Charas with an appreciable role. His hometown "Kotdwar Garhwal" a very simple man by character is famous in the glamour world. He was in Delhi from his childhood to his post teenage, and now is based in Mumbai. But still he is a "Pahadi" by culture, nature and behavior. Come let's share more about him:

How do you find yourself attached to Uttaranchal?
I am not attached to Uttaranchal only because my name suffix's "Badola", but because my parents have given me such culture. Let me be anywhere but I talk to my parents and relative in my mother tongue which is "Garhwali". I was in Allahabad for 5 years, 12 years in Delhi and 8 years I am here in Mumbai but still I am a Pahadi.

What are your memories in Kotdwara?
In Kotdwar a place is Bhabher. I have a farmhouse at these places. The number of stars I have seen from my farmhouse in the sky I haven't seen them anywhere else. We use to catch "Jugnoo" from here. I had one scooter in Kotdwar. I with my friend use to go to mountains along with our vehicles and use to eat roasted chicken there. And one more the "Bhandara" which happens mostly on Sunday at SIDHBALI MANDIR KOTDWARA. I used to like that the most, I use to go there very frequently. I really enjoyed those days of my life.

What do you like the most in Uttranchal?
First thing about Uttaranchal is the feeling of freedom we have, as it is an independent and remote city. Second is the wave there, which gives peace of mind. When I go there I feel relaxed and very good. And my grandmothers (Nani's) village "Soli" which was near "Rikhnikhal". I love that place.

Tell us something about your childhood?
Don't ask me about my childhood it is difficult to mention, because I didn't like studying I was never a good student.

Who is the ideal in your life?
For me my father is an ideal. He is a very good theater artist and also a very good singer. Whatever I learnt in my like is from my father. These days he is working with Ashutosh. Govarikar,s SWADESH.

What are your views on Uttranchali Theater or film's?
I don't think Uttranchali cinema is there. I have never felt the presence of it, it doesn't have any fame or existence. I have seen only one Garhwali film (JAGWAL) even though it was the first film still it was good in all ways. My all-family members praised it. There was one more good movie "Gharjavai". Now we will have to work hard for Uttaranchali.

If you get an opportunity will you work in Uttaranchali film?
Yes off course! I am an artist, if I get such opportunity I will surely do it and think it is my good fortune. But I should like the story of the film.

How is your experience on your work with Tigmanshu Dhulia?
About Tishu Bhai, I can't comment on him because I don't have words to describe him. I have learnt so much from him. I have worked as his assistance for four years.

You're favorite Garhwali song?
Yes my father sung long time back "Chela ki Yaad ma Jikudi Dhak Dhak kare by Vishvamohan Badola.

Any message for people in Uttranchal?
I Would like to say only that we will have to make Uttranchal and if we don't pay attention then it will be Uttranchal only by home. It wont be Uttranchal in real sense which is a need for the people there, and the most important we would have to take care of our humanity and have faith in it, we are "Uttaranchali's" we should stop discriminating between Garhwali, Kumaouni and other people. Because religion, caste doesn't matter much, what matters is what is the felling of the person about the place where he is staying. He should have love and belongings for that place. if you treat a person with care and love he will treat you as the same.

This is the turning point in the story,"

'I have already cried enough
10 Aug 2007, 0000 hrs IST,DEEPALI DHINGRA ,TNN

But the svelte actress with big beautiful eyes still misses home
It's been over a year that Sayantani Ghosh packed up bag and baggage and moved to Mumbai from Kolkata. But the svelte actress with big beautiful eyes still misses home.
"That's because I'm a very family person . Even when I get four or five days off from work here, I fly to Kolkata," says Sayantani and adds with a smile. "Mumbai is work, Kolkata is home."
The audience recognises Sayantani as Kakul from SaharaOne's Ghar Ek Sapna . But in her home town, she is also known as a film actress.
"Yes, that's true," she says, "I have done a few Bengali films with some top heroes there. But I do very selective projects there as I have to give my serial priority."
So why is Sayantani pursuing television here when she can stay in Kolkata and do more films? "The medium has never been my concern.
Even when I came to Mumbai, I had no plans in mind. I just wanted to evolve as an artist. And even though I was doing Bengali films, that was regional .
And I think TV has now become a huge medium. TV stars are equally recognised and respected," she says. Bollywood is surely on her mind. "I will definitely try my hand at films here but I won't have any qualms if I'm not able to do a Hindi film. I'm not that desperate!" she laughs.

At the moment, it is her track in Ghar Ek Sapna that is keeping her on her toes. "My role is not just of another lead who keeps crying.
Now, my character is standing up for her rights and even I identify with her. Just like Kakul, I have my own sweet way of fighting without insulting or arguing with someone ," she smiles.

I was trying to live without serials after five years in Kahani…'
Friday, August 03, 2007 12:2:33 IST
KIRAN KARMARKAR tells JYOTHI VENKATESH that what is important is not whether he wants to work with Ekta Kapoor but whether Ekta wants to work with him after 'Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki'
</>

How was the experience of having done stand up comedy in Comedy Circus?
Though Sunil Sawra and I were eliminated from the show, I enjoyed my stint very much. I got to learn a lot as an actor since we used to spend a lot of time in putting up acts impromptu. I think what went wrong was the script which we worked on. You never know, some scripts click, while some do not.

What is your role in Ajai Sinha's serial Ghar Ek Sapna?
I play the role of Shekhar. Ghar bananeke chakkar mein shaadi bhi nahi karta hoon. I am a very soft guy in the serial who likes this theeki ladki called Devika played by Barkha Madaan.

What attracted you about Ghar Ek Sapna?
The fact that it is Ajai who is making the serial was the main reason why I agreed to work in it. Thirteen years ago, I had acted in one episode in an afternoon serial directed by Ajai Sinha for Doordarshan. I have done big as well as small roles for which I have shot for two or three days in various serials of his since then. What I like about Ajai's serials is that besides the fact that they are different, they are also issue-based.

After Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, you do not have any serial with Ekta Kapoor?
Today every actor wants to work with Ekta Kapoor. There is no point at all in telling that I want to work with her. It is the other way round. The point is whether Ekta Kapoor wants to work with me now.

Tell us about the films in which you have worked till date!
I have worked in Deepak Balraj Vij's film Sai Baba and Essmayeel Shroff's Thoda Tum Badlo Thoda Hum Badle, besides Meghna Gulzar's Just Married in which my co-stars were Fardeen Khan and Esha Deol. Meghna knew Lubna for a long time. Lubna suggested my name for Just Married. It was just a 3 -day work and I did about four scenes in the film.

Why did you quit working in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki after reaching the zenith of your popularity by playing the role of Om in it?
It is now almost two years since I left Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki. Frankly, I got tired of the serial because I got bored with my character. Even today, there are people who frankly tell me that it was my most foolish decision to have walked out of Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki. I was part of the serial for almost five years.

In what way did working in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki benefit you?
It was while working in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki that I happened to bump into Rinku Dhawan who played the role of my sister in it. I fell in love with her and we got married.

Do you regret having quit the serial?
I have absolutely no regrets at all about having quit acting in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki. Though on paper I was required for just 15 days for the serial, I used to end up allotting almost 25 days for shooting for Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki every month. Saakshi Tanwar who played my wife in the serial used to believe in her role as Parvati but I could not because there came a stage when I started feeling that I was rattling off the same dialogues and meeting the same co-artistes month after month. I discussed with my wife Rinku abut this and only then did I take a decision to walk out
of the serial.

Did you have any reservations about sporting grey hair when the serial had a generation leap?
Frankly I had no compunctions at all when I was asked to sport grey hair and play dad to Tina Parakh in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki but these days, I find it quite difficult to say yes if some one wants to cast me as dad to say an actor like Harsh Chhaya.

What is the reason that you are extremely choosy as an actor?
I want to do only those roles, which will enable me to do justice to them as an actor. I do not want to accept each and every role that is offered to me just because there is a lot of money in it. Even a bar dancer is making crores today. That is not a big deal at all. I have confidence in myself as an actor and hence I cannot bring myself to work in inconsequential serials. I can live without a car and a bungalow.

Is it true that you were offered Harsh Chhaya's role in Smriti Irani's serial Thodi Hai Zameen Thoda Hai Aasmaan?
Way back in December 2005, when Smriti had offered to cast me in her serial, I had told her that I was trying to live without serials after having worked for five years in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki. However, the launch of her serial was delayed and by that time, I was ready to take up her serial. Since by then Harsh Chhaya was cast in the serial, I was asked to play the role of her husband in Thodi Hai Zameen Thoda Hai Aasmaan.

Is it true that though you have not worked with Vipul Amritlal Shah, he had recommended your name to several filmmakers?
It was indeed nice on Vipul's part to have sent a text message referring my name to several filmmaker friends of his. Most of them however havetold me that since their films were already on the floors, they were not in a position to cast me in their films and hence asked me to have patience and wait for one more year.

Ranjeet in Ghar Ek Sapna

esteryear villain Ranjeet is all set to enter Sahara One's Ghar Ek Sapna doing what he is best at. As Jagmohan, Ranjeet will be playing a shady politician who projects a goody-goody image in the public but indulges in underhand dealings in private. "The role sounded very interesting and has a lot of potential," says Ranjeet whose last serial on air was Aisa Des Hai Mera. He played a Sardar in it and for a change it was a positive role. "But mid-way the serial changed track and I had hardly anything to do. I lost interest in it," sighs Ranjeet. He however, feels that Ghar... will turn out to be a good experience because he has worked with director Ajai Sinha earlier in Dollar Bahu and "He's a good friend". Well, one can always hope...

Kahani Kiran Ki!!
[20 Aug 2007]

Kiran Karmarkar, who became famous playing the character of Om Agarwal in Balaji's Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki but later left due to stagnation, is all set to return to the show. Kiran has already met Balaji's czarina Ekta Kapoor and now writers are busy devising ingenuous ways to get him into the serial. Ekta has told the writers to come up with a very strong reason to show the justification for bringing him back in the show.

As a source from Balaji says, ' It's a two way situation. We wanted Kiran back in the show and he too needed the work. You can not have Parvati (Sakshi Tanwar) carrying all the scenes. Even Tulsi needs Mihir in Kyunki…. When he left, he said he was stagnating. Now that he has been eliminated from Sony's Comedy Circus, he's realized that there is nothing better than Kahanii for him.'

It may be recalled that Kiran will be returning to Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki after a break of two years. And during these two years he has worked in Smirti Irani's Thodi Si Zameen, Thoda Sa Aasman and Ajai Sinha's Ghar Ek Sapna. But things were not working out well for him and that forced him to return.
