Shreya's pronunciation is spot on though when it comes to South languages as far as I can tell. Don't know if she can read the languages. Other singers like even Lataji don't have that.

Rang De Basanti Chola was also a beautiful song, but the NA try to balance awarding major commercial films with recognising smaller films. That's why there's quite a lot of variation year after year. It is always a tough choice because rather than going for the hits of the year (like at Filmfare and IIFA), they have to choose from a large number of good songs from all over the country.
National Awards, more often than not, tend to value various factors over popularity, box office, music charts, etc.I think Chote Chote Sapne was a good choice in terms of the music, and lyrics especially. I do believe that the Devdas songs that Udit sang deserved recognition, too, but maybe they wanted to show appreciation for smaller films/units and songs with a simple, positive message about life, motivation and optimism, hence the choice. The same thing probably happened with Sandese Aate Hain. Even though it was a much more popular song, Mere Dushman Mere Bhai won because of the message it conveyed about peace and harmony. On the basis of the songs chosen by the jury, it seems that the NA places a lot of value and emphasis on lyrics.Panchi Nadiya had a beautiful message and was definitely a strong contender for the NA, but a regional film song won that year. I don't understand Tamil, so can't really comment on Yenna Solla Pogirai though I would be interested in knowing the opinions of any members here who do.Other memorable songs like those from Saawariaya and Chand Sifarish also did not win.As for Filmfare- Bheege Hoth Tere winning the Filmfare is strange. It looks like they went for popularity over anything else? Since Filmfare values popularity when giving awards, I was rooting for Tumse Milke by Sonu that year because not only was it very popular but is also technically a challenging song to sing. The Veer Zaara songs are all memorable, but when considering all factors, I think Tumse Milke should have won.
I think even Kumar Sanu's Sochenge Tumhe Pyaar was a strange choice, because the other nominations were not only more popular but required stronger vocal ability, too.As far as Kaho Na Pyaar Hai's Na Tum Jaano Na Hum winning, I think that year people went crazy about KNPH or something? 😕 I mean, Hrithik won Best Actor for it right?!I do love the song Na Tum Jaano Na Hum, but after listening to Lucky Ali sing live, it seems that his voice was heavily autotuned in the film? 🤔

^^Thank you for explaining the meaning of the lyrics of the song.
Yes, the melody/music definitely does count, but what I meant was that unlike other awards, where singers have sometimes won awards for songs with unremarkable lyrics, typically National Awards go to songs that have beautiful lyrics in addition to good music.
Never liked Lucky Ali's voice 🤔

^^ KK does not have any Filmfare awards?! Never realised. 😲
And yes, Himesh did win once and has at least one other nomination to his name. Bizarre. And with regards to Udit being shocked- yeah, I guess most people would have expected the win to be for Devdas, so I can understand his surprise. And yes, there are many songs, including the ones you've mentioned, that are deserving but don't win. It is partly due to the NA jury's attempts to balance small films with those produced by large production houses, and balancing regional cinema with Bollywood. It has its flaws, but is still better at recognising talent than the commercial awards like Filmfare and IIFA.I was reading about the selection process and I think that they should release the list of top nominations in each category. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/63rd_National_Film_Awards#Selection_process
