How many languages does she know vs sing ?

Shreya's pronunciation in other languages is mind blowing. She has sung many songs in Telugu and has never sounded like a non-Telugu speaking singer! None of the other singers are as versatile as her in multiple languages.

It is always a tough choice because rather than going for the hits of the year (like at Filmfare and IIFA), they have to choose from a large number of good songs from all over the country.

National Awards, more often than not, tend to value various factors over popularity, box office, music charts, etc.I think Chote Chote Sapne was a good choice in terms of the music, and lyrics especially. I do believe that the Devdas songs that Udit sang deserved recognition, too, but maybe they wanted to show appreciation for smaller films/units and songs with a simple, positive message about life, motivation and optimism, hence the choice.

The same thing probably happened with Sandese Aate Hain. Even though it was a much more popular song, Mere Dushman Mere Bhai won because of the message it conveyed about peace and harmony.

On the basis of the songs chosen by the jury, it seems that the NA places a lot of value and emphasis on lyrics.

Panchi Nadiya had a beautiful message and was definitely a strong contender for the NA, but a regional film song won that year. I don't understand Tamil, so can't really comment on Yenna Solla Pogirai though I would be interested in knowing the opinions of any members here who do.

Other memorable songs like those from Saawariaya and Chand Sifarish also did not win.

As for Filmfare- Bheege Hoth Tere winning the Filmfare is strange. It looks like they went for popularity over anything else? Since Filmfare values popularity when giving awards, I was rooting for Tumse Milke by Sonu that year because not only was it very popular but is also technically a challenging song to sing. The Veer Zaara songs are all memorable, but when considering all factors, I think Tumse Milke should have won.
I think even Kumar Sanu's Sochenge Tumhe Pyaar was a strange choice, because the other nominations were not only more popular but required stronger vocal ability, too.
As far as Kaho Na Pyaar Hai's Na Tum Jaano Na Hum winning, I think that year people went crazy about KNPH or something? 😕 I mean, Hrithik won Best Actor for it right?!

I do love the song Na Tum Jaano Na Hum, but after listening to Lucky Ali sing live, it seems that his voice was heavily autotuned in the film? 🤔

This is Yenna Sola Pogirai

It is from the film Kandukondein kandukondein , tamil remake of sense and sensibility. It was directed by Manirathnam and it also stars Ash. Lyrically this song while having the poetic words of Vairamuthu with nice descriptions about sandalwood scented breeze it is basically the guy asking the girl 'what answer are you going to give me regarding my love for you'. What makes it stand out for me is the music of ARR.

I do not know the specific songs SPB, Yesudas and Chitra won or who the music director was or if it was even Illayararaja sir. But the fact that they won and they so frequently collaborate with him makes me think music plays a big part in selecting a NA winner too.
ARR won the national award for Roja, his first movie. While not related, I do think music also plays a part, not just lyrics in selecting the NA winner.

^^Thank you for explaining the meaning of the lyrics of the song.
Yes, the melody/music definitely does count, but what I meant was that unlike other awards, where singers have sometimes won awards for songs with unremarkable lyrics, typically National Awards go to songs that have beautiful lyrics in addition to good music.

Welcome. The lyrics are actually very poetic and beautiful descriptions. Vairamuthu who wrote them is a poet and has won national awards for lyrics, several, I don't know the exact number. But I know he has had his poems in tamil translated in Russian and some European languages.

I used to like his voice (and still like his KNPH songs, O Sanam and Ahista Ahista), but after listening to his live music, I found that his voice in real life sounds nothing like it does in the studio albums. 😕

national award should have focused on vocally strong song with good lyrics than anything if its such a big award to say Abhi Mujh Main Kahin could be best if lyrics are considered on high priority but it also got nothing ...and i heard even udit narayan was shocked that he got award for chote chote sapne and not for any devdas song . 😛regarding sochenge tumhe pyar ve pehla nasha i always think the same how can u give award to some other song when pehla nasha was in nomination but than i realize himesh have one filmfare and kk doesnt have any it shows me the worth of filmfare 😃

^^ KK does not have any Filmfare awards?! Never realised. 😲
And yes, Himesh did win once and has at least one other nomination to his name. Bizarre.

And with regards to Udit being shocked- yeah, I guess most people would have expected the win to be for Devdas, so I can understand his surprise. And yes, there are many songs, including the ones you've mentioned, that are deserving but don't win. It is partly due to the NA jury's attempts to balance small films with those produced by large production houses, and balancing regional cinema with Bollywood. It has its flaws, but is still better at recognising talent than the commercial awards like Filmfare and IIFA.

I was reading about the selection process and I think that they should release the list of top nominations in each category. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/63rd_National_Film_Awards#Selection_process

National award is lot about political lobbying
It was revealed by Ritupo*no once who has probably highest number of NAs
Kunam is related to SLB..I wont be surprised if Kunal used his channels to get the NA despite the fact that the song was a national rage...The other explanation could be the jury succumb to popular choice
