Kunam is related to SLB..I wont be surprised if Kunal used his channels to get the NA despite the fact that the song was a national rage...The other explanation could be the jury succumb to popular choice

I do not know the specific songs SPB, Yesudas and Chitra won or who the music director was or if it was even Illayararaja sir. But the fact that they won and they so frequently collaborate with him makes me think music plays a big part in selecting a NA winner too.

ARR won the national award for Roja, his first movie. While not related, I do think music also plays a part, not just lyrics in selecting the NA winner.
