Priyanka Chopra's latest release Mary Kom' has set the cash registers ringing at the box office.

If Priyanka Chopra's role in "Mary Kom" as the five-time World boxing champion has changed the definition of "hero", the movie's producers too have a reason to smile as it has raked in Rs.17.25 crore in two days since release.

Based on the life of boxing champion M.C. Mary Kom, the unconventionally made biopic, which released Friday in 1,800 screens in the country, has many high points - Omung Kumar's deft direction, convincing adaptation of real life story, and last but not the least - Priyanka's "wow and convincing" performance.

Although biopics too take creative liberties, Kumar has tried to be as realistic as possible.

All that helped the film earn Rs.17.25 crore in just two days, said a source.

An excited Priyanka took to Twitter to thank fans for the "overwhelming" response to the biopic, which has been panned by some critics.

"Thank you for the incredible response to #MaryKom. I guess this film was such a heart wrenching experience that the love is just overwhelming (sic)," she tweeted Saturday.

Also starring newcomer Darshan Kumar, it is directed by Omung Kumar and co-produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Viacom18 Motion Pictures.

The release was preceded by a world premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival.

The Hindi film fraternity also lauded the film on social networking sites. Here's what celebrities have to say:

Punit Malhotra: Watched Mary Kom last night (Saturday). Super film. And only one person could do that role. Hats off! @priyankachopra. (sic)

Anubhav Sinha: #MaryKom does 8Cr on day one. No Skin. No Music. Hero Definition readjusted. #HUGE #COURAGE #OMUNG #SANJAY #VIACOM @priyankachopra

Swara Bhaskar: #MaryKom ! What an inspiring tale...The sportsperson a true hero, the role player a true actor! @priyankachopra TREMENDOUS work #respect !!

Mary Kom Monday (4th Day) Collection Update, Holding Well.

Posted by ankur baruah You May Also Like News on: Priyanka Chopra at Monday, September 08, 2014
Mary Kom is holding well on 4th Day (Monday) across all over India. At places film is showing drop which is bound because of Monday, but in most it is holding superb. In fact drop is just about 25-30% from Friday when occupancy for both days are compared. This augurs as good news for the film and if film holds well on Tuesday also, then it is a sure shot Hit in coming days.

Coming to occupancy film started on slow note in Morning shows. After that film picked up little in Noon-Afternoon shows. Film is doing decent from Evening onward with on average occupancy of 35% registered as latest report coming in.
Mumbai is holding very well and collections are just little below Friday numbers. Occupancy there for Evening shows is just about 40% which is good. In Delhi occupancy is decent for the same with around 35%. In Gurgaon film is slow today as weekdays generally does with around 25% registered there.

Coming to single screen, film business there is poor for the weekend and nothing much is expected from Monday also. Film is performing mainly in plexes which is now its main earning revenue source. Although major single screen data is awaited for the day.

Looking at early trends film Monday collection should be in the region of 5-6 crore nett if Night shows register the general growth. That will be a good total for the film.

Occupancy Report for Monday Evening Shows -

Delhi - 35%
Mumbai - 40%
Gurgaon - 25%

Posting from Recently Seen movies thread

Mary Kom

This should have been a great movie. You have a fantastic story, a story about a national champion who rose against all odds, a champion who gave hope to women and the under privileged. You have Priyanka Chopra who after Barfi does give it her all for a performance. The ingredients to make a great flick are right there handed on a platter. Sadly, it goes all wrong, terribly wrong. The makers of the flick botch it up in every which way.

When SLB said he was producing a commercial flick, he wasn't kidding. The film attempts to be so commercial that it relies on dramatic narrative elements of the cheesy over the top kind. It is almost as if they felt Mary Kom's authentic story wasn't good enough for celluloid. Now every biopic has embellishments. Even the critically acclaimed ones do jazz up things. But embellishments are there to enhance and add to the story. The clich elements of this film are so distracting, they dilute Mary's story. The movie also uses a non-linear narration for no good at all. I think the intent was to separate pre and post childbirth Mary, but they fail miserably causing the audience to wonder what the point of it all was.

The worst part of the movie is that Mary Kom is turned into a caricature. She is furious and yelling at the drop of a hat. Instead of a respected sports star she comes off as a loose cannon with anger management issues. Her struggles seem frivolous. It almost comes off as someone overreacting over first world problems. This is by far the most heartbreaking flaw in the movie. The real Mary Kom is someone who has faced serious hardships to get to where she is. You cannot make her biopic without really highlighting those struggles and framing them correctly.

The film focuses on so many clich masala elements that it ignores framing the problems. All they show is Mary Kom yelling or crying, without any explanation why. There is serious discrimination against North Eastern Indians and they have to struggle more for recognition. Many undergo bullying from others for not being Indian enough. Mary goes all Britney Spears, but it fails to explain the pressure of facing that bullying and discrimination for the first time. She has a meltdown screaming over discrimination for being Manipuri, but the movie barely shows the systematic discrimination. The movie makes it appear that Mary intentionally gave up boxing to be a mom, without delving into the pressures and judgments women in India face. She keeps having locking horns with the Federation but the deep rooted corruption is just glossed over.

I'm torn. On one hand I want the movie to be successful and people to watch it. Just for the sake of Mary Kom a great Indian athlete who deserves to have her story told and applauded. On the other hand I want people to reject the movie and let it fail. Because it isn't really her story. The makers have chosen to exploit her story for commercial gain and failed to present a real picture. I guess perhaps it deserves a watch because of Mary Kom and Priyanka Chopra.

But perhaps instead of supporting films we need to support the athletes instead. Despite movies like Chak De and  Mary Kom sports in India is often neglected. Corruption, favoritism and discrimination is rampant. Mere movies will not honor the players unless we can shake up and change the system.

Watched it last evening..a decent watch..but not at all up to the mark or expectations..I was expecting it to be another BMB at least if not Chak De..but no..Nowhere near..It seemed like the whole screenplay was copied and pasted from Wikipedia or Internet and the movie was made..I mean everyone will get to know she won five World Championships if they do some internet research..why go for a movie to watch a melodramatic version..if its not providing anything extra..something which people dont know about that public figure..That is where a BMB or even a Mangal Pandey wins to certain extent..Those movies were able to portray the life and internal turmoil of those unsung heroes of India.. throw light on those aspects of their lives which very few people knew yet..And Mary Kom fails there..
Performance wise apart from PC no one is worth mentioning..PC too was good..but I expected more..NOT outstanding stuff which she is capable of..Yes the script was a hindrance ..she didnt have much scope and did justice to it however well she could..But as someone who likes her a lot as an actor..she could do better..Loved the lullaby sequence where Mary sings for her kids and ofcourse the end..Mary standing infront of The Tricolor with National Anthem playing the in the BG..
Overall..It was so so..

1 min ago by Koimoi.com Team

The film recorded a 55% drop from it's Friday numbers. With its inability of staying strong in mass based circuits, the drop was even more stark for the film. The word of the mouth is mixed for the film. Tax free status is beneficial though but that too has not attracted much crowd for the film. Mary Kom is expected to remain stable over the week until the release of new films this Friday.
