"Gururbrahma Gururvishnu Gururdevo Maheshwaraha
Gurur sakshaat Parambrahma tasmai Shrigurave namaha"
(which means that Guru is Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. He creates and sustains knowledge and removes darkness of ignorance.)

The Full Moon of Ashadh month of the Hindu Calender is celebrated as "Guru Purnima" or "Vyasa Purnima". It is a festival dedicated to Teachers or Gurus and is celebrated mostly by Hindus and Buddhists.

Hindus commemorate this day as the birthday of Sage Vyasa, author of Mahabharata Epic and one of the greatest Gurus of his times. Buddhists remember this day as the day when Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon at Sarnath.

A Guru is a person who guides people through the difficulties of the life with the aid of their teachings and lessons. Hence, a Guru is a living embodiment of God for people in India. The Sanskrit Meaning of Guru has two parts, Gu which means darkness and Ru means remover of darkness. So Guru is a person who removes darkness of his pupil's lives.

According to Hindu Mythology, on this day of the Ashadh Month, Sage Vyasa or Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa was born to Sage Parashar and a fisherman's daughter Satyavati. He devoted his life to the service for the cause of Vedic studies dividing the hymns into 4 parts based on their use during rituals (Rig Veda, Sam Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda). His first four pupils were Paila, Vaisampayana, Jamini and Sumantu. He was then bestowed with the title of Vyasa (which means to edit) as he edited the Vedas.

Later in his life, it is said that he was called upon by Lord Brahma to pen down the Epic Mahabharat. Sage Vyasa requested Lord Ganesha to write down the epic while he recited the legendary story of the war of Kurukshetra.

He also wrote all the Puraanas (18 Main and 18 Up-Puraanas) and Brahma Sutras. Hence, he is regarded as one of the Greatest Gurus for Hindus. His Birth Anniversary is celebrated as Guru Purnima or Vyasa Purnima

According to Buddhism, after enlightenment Lord Buddha went to Sarnath from Bodhgaya. His disciples and pupils, the Pancavaggiya monks had already left him before enlightment and gone to Isipatana(Sarnath). He joined them 5 weeks after his enlightenment. To reach Sarnath, he had to cross Ganges and with no money with him, it took him great deal to do so. When the native King Bimbisara heard of this, he felt guilty and abolished any toll related to crossing the river. Reaching Sarnath, he met his 5 disciples and enlightened them. Sangha, Community of Enlightened Ones was found.

He delivered this sermon on a full moon of Ashadh Month and is known as Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta. Soon after his sermon, he resided there and the Sangha Community grew to 60 people. These 60 people were sent in all directions to preach Dharma and are known as Arhants.

According to Jainism, the 24th Tirthankara Mahavira made his first disciple Indrabhuti Gautam on this day after he attained Kaivalya. He became a Guru himself and this day fell on the beginning of Chaturmaas.

This day holds a lot of significance to Hindus, Buddhist and Jains. Hindus worship Sage Vyasa because of his divine teachings. Buddhists and Jains also consider this as an important day.

For the farmers, this day marks the advent of monsoons which instills new life in the fields after the scorching summers. Traditionally, it is said that the wandering teachers or sanyasis stop at one place during this time and deliver teachings to the people.

Buddhists observe uposatha which means to observe eight precepts. Vipassana meditators practice meditation under the guidance of their teachers. Since this day marks the advent of monsoons, monks remain at their monastery and dedicate themselves to Vassa or intensive meditation. They also help people to get rid of their bad habits like smoking and drinking during these months.

Hindus commemorate the birth of Sage Vyasa. Vyasa Pujas are organized at several places and offerings or prasad are given to the pupils or shishyas.

Socially, Indian Educational Institutions celebrate this day thanking teachers. Events are organized for teachers and professors all over India.

With all the respect for the Gurus,
Happy Guru Purnima
