Ek Villain In-house Movie Review
Posted by: Nandhini Updated: Thursday, June 26, 2014, 11:40 [IST]

Ek Villain is a romantic thriller directed by Mohit Suri. The film features Sidharth Malhotra, Shraddha Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh. Riteish Deshmukh debuts as an antagonist with this film. Ek Villain is produced by Ekta Kapoor, Shobha Kapoor of Balaji Telefilms. The film revolves around the dark shades of Sidharth Malhotra and he will to be doing a lot of action sequences for the film. This will be his first film where he is playing a character with grey shades. Riteish Deshmukh earlier commented about his transition from comic roles to a negative shade as 'radical departure'. Mohit Suri had to hunt a lot to find a lead actress before signing Shraddha Kapoor. Both Ekta and Mohit Suri rounded in on Shraddha Kapoor finally. Alia Bhatt and Esha Gupta were also considered for this role earlier. Shraddha Kapoor didn't hesitate to accept the offer considering her Aashiqui 2 success by Mohit Suri. Shaad Randhawa, who plays CBI officer Aditya Rathod in Ek Villain, says the role was challenging. "Sidharth Malhotra and Riteish Deshmukh have been pitched as villains, but here is a cop who fights against them... that can make him the villain of the story," he says. The curiosity among the fans of who would be the real villain in the film is getting higher by the day. Every character has a grey shade to it. Even Shaad has. Shaad Randhawa explains, "We all have a dark side. Aditya has his own reason for behaving the way he does. He has no qualms manipulating and if you have done something wrong, he will get back at you. His views do not necessarily conform to the norms. All these traits make his role interesting." Here's how the story goes... Mohit Suri and his dark character obsession in all his films also follows in Ek Villain.

Sidharth Malhotra as Guru a ruthless guy works for a goon in Goa played by Remo Fernandes. Guru's past keeps haunting him until he meets Aisha (Shraddha Kapoor). The duo instantly falls in love and marriage follows their love. Just when Guru quits his job and moves to Mumbai with Aisha for a new beginning the trauma begins. Aisha is chased by the antagonist and falls prey to this cat and mouse chase! Guru who begins his journey of finding the assailant learns shocking things which is the crux of Ek Villain. Figuring out the real problem and the antagonist's motive becomes tough. What happens between Guru and the assailant is the story which unfolds beautifully. Mohit Suri has proved time and again in his earlier movies and has not failed us even in Ek Villain. Mohit Suri has brought in the emotions beautifully, be it the loving moments between the couple, the turbulent times of their lives, the chase which happens after that and the stunning end says it all. Tushar Hiranandani who is the script writer has given us all a very beautiful work which keeps the audience gripping to their seats till the very end.

The most unexpected ending of the film is awaiting the audience. All the songs just stay in the mind even after one comes out of the movie hall. 'Galiyaan' track is awesome, Prachi Desai in 'Awari' also has given her bit. Sidharth as an angry young man has portrayed his emotions well. Remo Fernandes as a goon and Amna Shariff who plays wife to Riteish are also the ones to watch out for.

Overall, Ek Villain is Mohit Suri's mind-blowing film till date.

Ek Villian Set For Strong Start

Ek Villian is looking at a strong start when it opens tomorrow. Despite having limited face value the film has super hit music with Galiyaan becoming the second biggest hit song of the year after Baby Doll.

The film has a cost of under 40 crore including production budget and print/advertising costs and is looking at a opening which will practically ensure the film is a plus unless something goes wrong badly with content and it crashes in the weekend itself.

The opening may not be strong in the smaller cities due to the cast but its not really a big film that needs all India box office collections. The film will be hit in East Punjab as Punjab 1984 will release there and dominate all the big cities of Punjab leaving Ek Villian centres like Gurgaon and Faridabad and a couple of other cities in Haryana to get good collections. Mumbai and Central India should be best for Ek Villian.

This article is in sync with KoiMoi prediction... & What is this has 2 mean?? It will be hit coz of Diljit's big film coming?? Punjab 1984 is huge punjabi film & Diljit is in great form with biggest BB, so it will suffer dent in punjab region... but how it would get hit is confusing on that line?

EK VILLAIN Is Perfect Revenge Drama

Pluses:

Riteish Deshmukh is the surprise package and delivers one of his career best performances, Siddharth Malhotra is good in his menacing act, Shraddha Kapoor does her job well, impactful dialogues by Milap Zaveri, Mohit Suri triumphs as director once again, hit songs

Minuses:

dark theme might deter some section of audience, one dimensional characters especially of Shraddha, tacky supporting cast

Critic Rating:

4/5

Business Rating:

4/5

Verdict:

Watch it for some real intense revenge drama which is a rarity these days in Bollywood

Detailed Analysis:

Shahrukh Khan attained stardom with his charismatic portrayal of anti hero cum villainous characters in films like 'Baazigar', 'Darr' and 'Anjaam'. Lately almost every actor copied him at least once but no one managed to create same magic. Now Mohit Suri brings another anti hero film 'Ek Villain' featuring Riteish Deshmukh as his trump card.

Film starts with the murder of Aisha (Shraddha Kapoor) in very first shot. While she was talking to her love interest, someone breaks into her house and killed her. After that in flashback, we get to know a sweet (actually over sweet, pun intended!) love story between a dreaded killer Guru (Siddharth Malhotra) and sweet girl next door Aisha (Shraddha Kapoor). She converts him into a nice human being and her habit of spreading happiness moves Guru in big way. One day Aisha reveals that she is suffering from some deadly disease and she has few more days to live. But Guru's faith and perseverance brings her back to life. Flashback ends and we come to know that there are few suspects of Aisha's murder including Guru's boss Caesar (Remo Fernandes). Rakesh Mahadkar (Riteish Dehsmukh) works in telephone department and living a real miserable life. His wife does not respect him and every one around him thinks that he is a useless fellow. Is he the serial killer and murderer of Aisha and what is the motive behind the killing - all these questions will be answered when you visit a cinema near your place.

Performance wise Riteish Deshmukh surprises and proves his versatility as an actor. He plays role of simple common man with twisted head with exceptional subtlety. He should win few negative role or supporting role trophies next year. Siddharth Malhotra is good and keeps tempo of his act intact throughout though his limitations in terms emoting visible at places. Shraddha Kapoor almost carries on her 'Aarohi' act from 'Aashiqui 2' as she again plays simple and sweet chic. But she suffers from overly one dimensional character. Sadly film's biggest minus is loud supporting cast including Shaad Randhawa (who is always and only seen in Mohit Suri's films), Remo Fernandes and few more 'not so' (you guessed it right!) important ones.

Music is big plus as almost every song looks situational and melodious. There is no unnecessary forcibly inserted loud party number which is exception in todays times. Easily 'teri Galiyan' and 'Banjaaara' create maximum affect but 'Awaari' is my favorite. Editing is crisp and cinematography is rich. In writing department, Tushaar Hiranandani borrows heavily from original source material Korean film 'I Saw The Devil'. Few shots including the hospital one is blatantly copied. But back story of Ritesih Deshmukh gives a real contemporary angle to the tale. But it is man with golden touch Milap Milan Zaveri who again shows power of dialogues. He lifts the film few notches and brings a sense of purpose to every character. He is bound to get few trophies for this.

And yes it is director Mohit Suri who once again certain to deliver yet another winner at box office. His control over medium in this dramatic massy genre with hit music is simply outstanding. This might not be another 'Aashiqui 2' but another feather in his cap for sure. Though over dark theme might limit its appeal in metros but still it will be another massy hit.

Film will release tomorrow and should get big release across 2200 screens. Film will get some competition from Hollywood's 'Transformers:Age Of Extinction'. Still film should open with big initials due to chartbuster music and interesting promo. Film is made not on that big budget and sold for 25 cr all India price. It is sure shot box office hit especially among masses but amount of repeat audience and metro urban crowd will decide its final figure.

Go for this one for some real edge of the seat entertainment but in Bollywood style!
