Chapter 15 B - Can i do this?
"There must be some mistake," Asad told the Mr. Mirza in front of him.
"No, no mistake Beta," Mr. Mirza told him in an abrupt tone. "Zoya had specifically asked me to send over to you the two transfer papers as compensation of what your Ammi has lost so many years ago."
Asad angrily retorted back. "Oh yeah? And how is she going to compensate me back for the other things I've lost?"
Asad was furious. How dared Zoya undermine what they had shared by paying him off like this? How dared she?
Mr. Mirza cocked his eyebrows in surprise and refrained from answering, which made Asad angrier.
AAK - "You go and tell Zoya that she will never be able to atone what Mr. Siddiqui did to my family."
"What her father did," the lawyer repeated his words and Asad stared at Mr. Mirza blankly.
AAK - "Is he out of his mind? Why was he repeating my last sentence?" Asad cocked his eyebrows haughtily in an unvoiced question.
Mr. Mirza - "I am stressing on your last sentence beta. What her abbu did. Why should she pay for his sins?" Mr. Mirza asked in a prim and proper tone.
"What do you mean?" Asad asked outraged. "I am not asking Zoya to pay for his sins. I am just saying that paying me off would never heal the wounds Mr. Siddiqui had inflicted. And Zoya is his beloved daughter after all."
"Beloved?" scoffed Mr. Mirza. "Now, that's where you are mistaken." He removed his reading glasses and placed them in his upper pocket and was looking at Asad in a pensive way.
Despite himself, Asad was intrigued. He had never gotten a clue from Zoya if her relationship had been estranged; not three years ago when they had been engaged and not now when he had deliberately tormented her. There has to be some mistake, right?
Mr. Mirza smiled desolately facing Asad with an expression that made his heart chill. Automatically, Asad knew he was not going to like what was coming his way.
FM - "You've avenged Gaffur through Zoya. Had targeted her from the beginning. Never spared her a thought. Do you even know who her mother was?"
Asad nodded avidly feeling almost relieved that Mr. Mirza was not going to tell him anything he didn't already know.
"Her mother was Zainab Farooqui," Asad put in with prompt.
"Wrong," Mr. Mirza corrected. "Her mother was Zainab Farooqui Siddiqui. Gaffur and Zainab got secretly married because Gaffur had convinced Zainab that he did not want to compromise her career."
Asad was flabbergasted. "What? But Zoya had always told me that she was the result of an affair and her father had been married to Razia long before."
Mr. Mirza nodded. "That was the story they had fed her since childhood and Zoya got to know the truth on the day you left her on your Nikaah. As soon as the guests had left, they wasted no time in telling Zoya the truth about her mother and that they wanted her out of their lives. They had been blaming Zoya for the fact that you left her on your Nikaah."
Asad opened his mouth but Mr. Mirza went on.
FM - "You see, Gaffur had only tolerated his daughter to please one of his wives who had been unable to conceive. And Zoya had been living with her poor mother when Gaffur had decided to adopt his only child at that time to appease his current wife because she had discovered his frauds."
Unable to believe what he had just learned, Asad leant back in his chair and stared at the man in front of him. He was sure his eyes were as big as saucers ready to pop out. That kind of information, one could never get from a PI, he admitted to himself in defeat.
AAK - "You mean to say that her father told her the truth about her background on our Nikaah - our famous Nikaah?"
Mr. Mirza nodded and Asad swallowed the bile that rose up in his throat. How could a man be so cruel to his own daughter? How could a man be so ruthless so heartless as to inflict such kind of treatment to his own blood?
"Right, I agree with you," Mr. Mirza replied apparently reading the questions that were trotting in Asad's mind by the expression on his face. Asad was totally horrified. He couldn't even begin to imagine what kind of pain Zoya had endured on that day. Having to bear the fact that the two most important men of her life were only tolerating her for their own selfish benefit.
"Why had Zainab allowed Siddiqui to adopt Zoya?" Asad asked raggedly.
FM - "Zainab didn't but had no money to fight him because her own father had disowned her and Gaffur had been the rich party. It killed her eventually."
Closing his eyes in anguish, Asad had to touch and rub his temples to absorb the latest news. He could remember now that he had read somewhere that Zainab Farooqui had been found dead in a slum.
After her divorce, Mr. Mirza told him, Zainab had been raising her child alone but when her husband Mr. Gaffur Sidique had threatened to defame her reputation and drag her to court, she had agreed to the adoption. Zainab had no other option really. What court would give her custody when she had no money to feed herself and the child.
Mr. Mirza - "What happened to your ammi Asad, happened to Zoya's ammi as well. Except the suicide. Who is going to compensate Zoya for her loss?"
Already remorseful, Asad wanted to stop Mr. Mirza but he knew that what he was hearing was the truth and however bitter, he had to accept it. There had been too many secrets, too many facts that he had omitted; had assumed. It was time for a reality check.
"On top of that, you punished Zoya for something she hadn't even known about. I told her about the suicide of your mother in the day the Will was opened. Zoya had always believed that you've left her because a business deal had fallen off between you and Gaffur. And that you had been ready to marry her as part of the deal."
Asad was quite expecting that blow; he knew now that Zoya was not someone to fool anyone. She would never lie to anyone; had not a single bone in her body which would made her a liar. Zoya was an angel; with not one iota of evil in her soul. As long as he lived, he would never be able to forgive himself for all the pain he had inflicted on her. The redemption, Asad was feeling, must have shown on his facial features because Mr. Mirza was trying to pacify him.
FM - "Now Beta, don't worry too much. What's done is done. You love her, don't you?"
Looking up, Asad felt surprised at the question. Was it that obvious? He reckoned that there was no use in denying the fact now; he had already lost everything. How could pride matter now?
So Asad nodded in acknowledgment.
Mr. Mirza nodded back enthusiastically having already guessed the answer. "Right. Now what have you decided to do about it?"
"Excuse me?" Asad asked arrogantly. He was not going to share his personal life with that old man. No way!
But Asad found himself pouring out his heart telling him how he no longer expect Zoya to forgive him for what he had done. Even if Asad had never intended to hurt Zoya like that. All he had wanted to do was to get back his ammi's properties thinking that he might get some salvation. Now that he'd had them, Asad was still not happy. Not satiated.
"So, you're gonna walk out of Zoya's life just like that? After giving her so much pain?" Mr. Mirza asked him disapprovingly.
AAK - "You should know Zoya better than me, Mr. Mirza. She will never forgive me for what I've done to her. She loves passionately and hates even more passionately."
FM - "Make that Uncle Feroz, beta. I get your point but correct me if I'm wrong, Zoya's never going to heal also. She loves so passionately that I think it will be impossible for her to love someone else but YOU."
"You think so?" Asad asked sitting up hope filling his heart and he could feel goose bumps of anticipation along his arms.
FM - "I know so. How many relationships had Zoya had for the last three years? None! She has just retreated in her shell trying her best to protect her heart; not that I blame her after everything she had been through but this is definitely not the correct way to live life, right?"
Asad's head was bobbing up and down like somebody has suddenly adjusted a spring in his neck. He was totally agreeing with Uncle Feroz feeling optimist after a long long time.
FM - "Go to Zoya, Beta. Tell her that you love her. She might surprise you. And besides what more you've got to lose?"
Uncle Feroz was right. Asad would not let his Zoya go. He had to convince her at any cost. If Zoya had given him her virginity, it had to mean something. Even if there were one percent of chance that Zoya would take him back, he would grasp the opportunity like a greedy child.
Asad was going to win Zoya back at any cost if it was the last thing he did in his life. Zoya Siddiqui nope Zoya Farooqui was his and his only. Even if Zoya did not love him anymore, Asad had enough love for them both. It was decided; he would conquer her back.
