Chapter 16 -
I think I know what hell really means!!!
Zoya scanned the room for the umpteenth time but Asad was nowhere in sight. Deciding it was time to go, Zoya tried to get up but Mrs. Rafiq joined her to ask her whether she was going to be present for the children's function. Zoya had been responding politely but at the mention of her mother's name, she had instantly felt nostalgic. She had been two when Zainab Farooqui had died and did not even remember her.
And the most pathetic part of it all was that Zoya had not known who her mother had been until she had been twenty. Zoya had always believed her step mother who had tagged her as "Najaayaz" and had assumed that her father had had an affair after his marriage to Razia.
Zoya had learnt the truth about her own mother on her Nikaah. The day she had been left by the man who had pledged to love her all his life. The day she had had her heart broken to pieces by the two most important men of her life. Her father and her love... ASAD.
Memories she had been suppressing for so long flooded her again and she left the Madarsa feeling lost and forlorn. When she reached the her apartment, Zoya dropped herself on her bed and closed her eyes in remembrance of the most horrible day of her life.
After Zoya had finally acknowledged that Asad would not be coming for the nikaah, she had slumped her lifeless body on the floor not registering any sight or sound. The past hours of sheer humiliation and depression of having stood there in front of so many people was starting to take its toll on her. A few people surrounded Zoya but she had been beyond caring. Some close family and friends had all been phoning Asad Ahmed Khan frantically but his phone had been off.
Zoya never knew when all the guests had left and Razia had been thankfully tactful about the whole incident. But not her dear Abbu, Mr. Gaffur Ahmed Siddiqui. He had felt no qualm about blaming her over and over but she had not been paying attention to a word; so engrossed was Zoya in her own anguish.
It was when Mr. Siddiqui had mentioned Zoya's mother that she had finally looked up at him and had seen his face distorted out of pure rage.
"You're as useless as your Ammi," he spat spitefully and looking at her with hate in his eyes. Zoya felt a pang of shame for being the child of such a pitiable man.
Still crouched down on the floor, Zoya's feelings still numb, she noted that only Razia and Tanveer was present in the hall and for that she was grateful. Throughout her life she had always been insulted by Razia about Zoya's ammi had been nothing but a beggar and she had preferred to bear the insults alone. Being used to hearing such vile words about her mother, she had bowed her head not replying back but instead expecting to hear more.
"I should never have married her," Mr. Siddiqui said with regret. "She was such a wasted investment anyway all because of that bloody Omar Farooqui and now you her very own daughter had failed to be with a man like Asad Ahmed Khan. Do you even know how much he is worth?" he shouted in a high pitched tone.
As his words registered in Zoya's troubled mind, she looked up at him in Mr. Siddiqui was angry... very angry.. he didn't even know what all he was talking!
"Wh..aa..aat?" Zoya demanded in voice she barely recognized as her own.
"Crores," Mr. Siddiqui went on. "That's what he's worth. And because of you I have suffered such a huge lose!"
Zoya - "A...Abbu, what are you saying? You were married to Ammi?"
At that instant, Razia intervened and touched her husband's arm gently in an attempt to appease him.
Razia - "Now, Siddiqui Sahab. Calm down. She does not have to know about her ammi."
But Mr. Siddiqui had not been in a mood to listen to Razia and had shrugged out of her touch in a brusque gesture. "Let her know who her ammi had been. And then she can get the hell out of our lives for all I care. I had planned to marry her off to a rich husband like Asad in exchange of some riches but she no longer serves me any purpose anyway."
Zoya was horrified at her father's words; she knew he had never liked her, hated her even. But she had never imagined in her wildest dreams to such an extent.
"I had to tolerate you ever since your ammi died; ever since you were two. Do you know why I agreed to take you under my protection by the way?"
Mr. Siddiqui was not really expecting an answer and Zoya did not even bother replying back. Not that she could anyway.
"Because that bitch Alia had found out the truth about my schemes and was going to expose me and I had to convince that stupid woman that I had changed before trapping her too," he laughed sadistically.
He had been hysterical.
"And your mother was nothing but a loose character woman before I got into her life. But she was filthy rich and my first prey. When I met her, I seduced her right away - not difficult tasks since she had been so easy, you know."
Zoya wanted to block her ears to block out the truth but some masochist part of her would not let her. She was so numb with shock that she could not even shift from the awkward position she was.
"But your Nanaji had to spoil all my plans absolutely refusing to acknowledge me and I had to marry your ammi to gain access to some of her wealth. But guess what? Zainab had been so foolish that she had fallen pregnant with you and had ruined her career. I had still been hoping to extort some money from her but when that Omar Farooqui decided to disinherit her, I had had enough!"
He'd had enough? HE'D HAD ENOUGH!!!! Unrestricted rage took hold of Zoya and she felt her body shaking with anger and defiance.
"What are you Gaffur Ahmed Siddiqui??? I feel ashamed that I am your blood!!," she had said in a voice which had sounded creaky and husky.
Mr. Siddiqui seemed to jerk out of his enraged mood at the sound of Zoya's voice and Zoya stood up to confront him her stance rigid with insolence.
"Oh you are going to accuse your Abbu now?," Razia cut in before Mr. Siddiqui could reply back.
"Shut up!" Zoya had cried out nearly frenzied with pain and shock and Razia had backed off seeming to catch her mood. "You are the tramp in the story Razia not my ammi," she menaced her with a waving finger right in her face.
"And as for you," Zoya turned to Mr. Siddiqui now pointing her finger in his direction. What could she say to such a Father? To someone who had tolerated her? The irony of the situation struck Zoya then as both of the men who had been supposed to love her to bits had only been tolerating her.
"Forget it," Zoya said in between tears. "I'm getting the hell out of your life tonight and please don't ever show me your disgusting face again."
With those words flung to their faces, Zoya had walked out of the Nikaah hall still in her bridal dress and had taken direction towards her sanctuary - her place in the garden. Zoya did not know for how long she sat there with nobody to share her grief.
Zoya did not know what to mourn, her ruined Nikaah, broken heart by love of her life or the pathetic truth she had just learned. Zoya's whole world had crumpled down within a few hours and she had never felt so lonely in her whole life, not even when Razia had almost starved her to death once or had insulted the hell out of her so many times.
Zoya Farooqui had taken life as it had come to her, compromising and not complaining the difficulties it had thrown her way sure that one day everything would turn alright. Optimist by nature, Zoya had even believed that her Ammi (Razia) and Abbu might come to love her one day if she listened to them and bowed to their demands.
And finally the truth hit Zoya with such a force that she almost staggered and had to brace herself against the excruciating pain that racked through her body. Nothing was going to be alright again. Zoya was all alone and should learn to live with that truth. Zoya welcomed the tears that flowed on her cheeks as she mourned the departure of her love Asad and the loss of her parents.
