Movie Review: Aiyyaa

Director: Sachin Kundalkar

Cast: Rani Mukerji, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Anita Date, Subodh Bhave and Amey Wagh

It takes courage to present something never-done-before on the larger-than-life canvas of the big screen. And surprisingly debut director (at least in Hindi films) Sachin Kundalkar shows this trait with great effect in his film Aiyyaa. Hats off to an established star, Rani Mukerji, for showing such conviction in Kundalkar's experimental vision. This truly is a good time for Hindi cinema. Only recently Gauri Shinde displayed fantastic finesse and subliminal storytelling skills in English Vinglish and Kundalkar has emulated the same skill in Aiyyaa. To simplify things you can safely sum up Aiyyaa as a wakda (twisted) film.

Rani Mukerji's Meenakshi is a naughty, free-spirited and expressive girl who effortlessly juggles between reality and dream land at the drop of a hat. Her dreams are a quirky, imaginative and beautiful place but her reality is full of wakda characters too. Her father smokes four cigarettes at a time, her grandmother is blind but has 32 teeth of solid gold, her brother is the messiah of stray dogs and her mother is straight out of a Saas Bahu serial hell-bent on getting Meenakshi married. It is this over-the-top reality that Meenakshi escapes from into her dreams of being Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla. Kundalkar uses hit songs of these actresses (Kaate nahi kat te (Mr India), Oh piya piya (Dil) and Ghazab ka hai din (QSQT)) to express Meenakshi's suppressed feelings.

Meenakshi's family coax her into getting married to Madhav who by definition is ideal husband material. But Meenakshi finds herself attracted to the scents of a South Indian hunk called Surya (Prithviraj Sukumaran). When Meenakshi digs for facts about her mysterious stranger she comes across inconvenient truths like his habit of alcoholism and drug abuse. But Kundalkar uses this as a plot twist and finally when the truth is revealed you make sense of Meenakshi's odd attraction to this strange man.

Aiyyaa is based on a previous short film by Kundalkar called Gandh (Roughly described as smell or odour). But translating this short story into a generous runtime of 2.5 hours proves to be his biggest challenge. Even though his film is peppered with captivating characters and slice of life situations their charm doesn't quite last throughout the film. Certain scenes like the time when Rani and her brother approach a drug peddler and the song What to do seem out of context and bog the narrative down.

Having said that, Aiyyaa's strength lies in its dramatic segments driven by the characters. Again, Kundalkar deserves praise for the fact that he does not try to make his characters real. Instead, the film captures them at their colourful and gaudy best. Even arbitrary props like stray dogs and trash cans have instrumental parts in his narrative. Perhaps because Kundalkar is a Maharashtrian himself, he is able to capture and utilise Marathi culture and attire to good effect in his film.

Rani lives the character of Meenakshi in every sense of the word. Her dancing especially in songs Dreamum wakeupam and Aga bai is simply out of this world. Meenakshi comes across as a vivid character with surreal dreams and touching real issues only because of Rani's superlative and no-holds-barred performance. Her expressions are simply priceless. She is the hero of the film and mind you Prithviraj is the subject of the female gaze, all sexy and hot. That he's playing a South Indian character works in his favour is a given. But Prithiviraj does so much more, at times holding his own especially in romantic sequences. Mynaa played by Anita Date (and her unique prosthetic teeth) is the breakout character of the film. She's as wild and wacky as the film itself.

The sights are all there, but Aiyyaa excels in its sounds too. Amit Trivedi delivers fantastic music and background score. But it's the sounds of barking dogs, ruffling trash, clinking bangles that add a layer to the film. To top that, Amitabh Bhattacharya's lyrics are as mad as the hatter. They are as much the USP of this film as Rani Mukerji. Cinematographer Amalendu Chaudhary captures the millions of Aiyyaa colours with beauty too. If you like entertainment with a twist, Aiyyaa is perfectly wakda.

There's nothing new about love at first sight. Movies and books have been done to death on it. But love at first sniff?

When she's not escaping to her Bollywood dreams, Meenakshi (Rani Mukerji) has a tough job working as a librarian while trying to keep (what's left of) her sanity with her dog loving brother Nana, marriage obsessed mother, cigarette addict father and grandmother with gold teeth who vrooms around the house in her wheelchair. But there's more, Meenakshi's colleague at the art college, Maina (Anita Date), wears the most atrocious costumes and does the weirdest things.

Meenakshi sucks it up and goes through the daily programs of seeing potential grooms while wishing for a handsome prince to sweep her off her feet. Surya (Prithviraj) is the man for her. One whiff of this bloody-eyed brilliant art student and Meenakshi is left gasping for air. She tries to dig out all that she can about him but ends up with bits and pieces of information mostly from Maina and the canteen boy.

But the feisty Meenakshi has set her eyes (and nose) on Surya. To win his heart, she learns Tamil, sneaks into his house and stalks him whenever possible. But our hero barely knows of her existence. At the same time, her parents succeed in finding a boy for her – the simple and sweet Madhav (Subodh Bhave).

Whom does Meenakshi choose? And what's the secret behind his scent driving her nuts?

Prithviraj Sukumaran and Rani Mukerji in a still from Aiyyaa Movie

Aiyyaa Review: Script Analysis

Sachin Kundalkar's story is as crazy as it gets and he's translated it beautifully on screen. The characters have been developed so finely that every time any two of them meet, there's something interesting bound to happen. And for once, it just isn't the routine running-around-trees. He gives us a heroine who loves her Bollywood and wants to live it as well. On the other hand, we have an artist whose life is in stark contrast to his admirer.

But even with all the expertise, you do get bored of Meenakshi chasing Surya after a while. While it's really novel to see a heroine enamoured by the scent of her hero, the stalking gets repetitive after a while. Some of the detours in the screenplay seem unnecessary and needlessly lengthen the film.

Aiyyaa Review: Star Performances

Rani Mukerji might have Agabai-ed, Aiyaa-ed and Issh-ed more than a dozen times on screen but the gal is wonderful! Rani lives it as Meenakshi with all the narcissism, over the top drama, unquestioning love and she does it beautifully throughout. Prithviraj gets very little to do as Surya but he manages well. Anita Date is an exciting surprise as Maina. Every time you see her on screen, she's got something special and different that will crack you up. Subodh Bhave is adorable as Madhav. Satish Alekar, Nirmiti Sawant, Ameya Wagh and Jyoti Subhash are delightful as Meenakshi's mad-cap family.

Aiyyaa Review: Direction, Music & Technical Aspects

Sachin Kundalkar has directed the movie very well though it lags in many parts. The visuals of the colours and the art have been done so masterfully that you want to give most of the credit to Amalendu Choudary for the mesmerizing cinematography. Amit Trivedi's music is perfect. Vaibhavi Merchant has spun her magic, especially with the sexy and enticing Aga Bai song. Amitabh Bhattacharya's lyrics are mischevious. Abhijeet Deshpande's editing is alright.

Aiyyaa Review: The Last Word

Aiyyaa is quirkily different and is worth watching for all the characters. But the sniffing and chasing gets a bit annoying.

this is what i meant.. many LOVED the film but hated the sniffing, chasing part and some characters. i've read reviews on twitter and most of them said that the film is good but they should have left some characters out, like the grandmother and the gaga-bai. otherwise it seems to be really funny.

Some posts from another platform:"AIYYAA reminds me of new age cinema! The film-making style is truly truly different. I have seen this kind of shot taking in a mainstream Hindi film before."
"As for supporting characters, there lies the quirk. You never know the character motivations, where they came out from, what and why they are doing things... no explanations have been made. At times it makes sense... example Meenakshi's MOM...an appropriately WAKDA character. Her brother is also fine. Where is falters big time is with MAINA. If I were to review the film, I would have reduced one star just for this character. It is THAT bad. This was despite the fact that I loooved her in GANDHA :| Same goes for Rani's grandma. Weird is the word. Her dad is just about okay. But, her smoking 5 cigarettes together & all hardly makes sense to the plot."
"The middle class atmosphere has been etched out really well. Just perfect."
"Some scenes are well written and directed even better; example is Rani's date with Subodh and the scene thereafter at home. Her transition from sober to melodramatic within minutes is superb there."

Just watched AIYAAA, and can confirm the following:
1. It is zany, over the top, whacky entertainment...pls leave your brain and any expectations of a hidden message outside...this is as crazy as crazy gets. For all those wanting to walk out educated, hoping that this movie would speak "volumes", sorry, this one is not for u.
2. Kudos to director and cinematographer for colourful visualisation of this crazy world of this "wakda" family, becuase they do test the boundaries of "sanity".
3. Music is superb, and Aaga Bhai and Dreamum Wakepum song sequence looks so much better on the big screen.
4. Performance of supporting cast...hats off to Madhva (rani's fiance in movie), and the canteen boy...their performances were endearing. Her mom, dad, brother, granny and weird friend takes a bit of getting used to, but eventually they grow on you (especially her crazy mom).
5. Prithviraj says little with his mouth, but alot with his HOT HOT HOT body (Humma, Humma)
6. Rani is the body, heart and soul of the movie. She literally drives every scene, and her fanatsy world is even crazier than her real life. They way she has morphed/spoofed Madhu, Sridevi and Juhi is mindblowing (if u watched their movies you will agree). Her melodramatic portrayel of this character was well suited (i tried to imagine another bolloywood actress playing this role, and seriously cannot picture anyone being able to pull it off without coming across as unnatural, or sarcastic. I can understand why rani was the only choice for this movie...no one can pull off OTT melodrama the way she can). Her comedic timing is spot on, and her chemistry with all her co-stars is quite apparent and needs to be commended.
7. Downside (unfortunately) is that there is no solid script or scriptwriting, it could have been alot less dramatic, certain scenes were unnecessary and could have been deleted (may have been an added bonus if movie was a little shorter). The stalking and sniffing scenes could have been lessened and Prithviraj could have been given more dialogue. The narrative of the movie is dulled by the OTT craziness, and in my opinion caused the "plot" to be lost. The humour is apparent in the scenes rather than the dialogue, although there some crackling one-liners.
8. Overall this movie is a must watch if you ONLY looking to be entertained (with no expectations or hidden agenda), and if u are a true Rani fan. She is a visual feast of melodrama, crazy and wakda all rolled into this firecracker of a movie. This movie may not have Blockbuster written all over it, or make it to the 100 crore club, but is certainly value for money for all the reasons above (except no.7)

A thought just occured to me here...
does the low opening reports mean Item numbers no matter
how much skin show and sexy moves are there are no longer
the criteria for bringing in people in first day?
ranis belly dancing had to be seen to be believed...
or do the songs coming on tv kindof lessen the audience
who just go for the songs?

"The portral of the middle class girl who cooks, cleans, washes clothes, goes marketing was spot on. The house looked very real."
"Meenakshi and her mum's very casual behavior."
"Rani was simply superb as usual as Meenakshi. She was simple and cute. Soft spoken and always lost for words when she meets Surya but dreams of sex and all. Her screen presence is amazing. And she has a lot of screen time. She is like a little melodramatic but not wakda' Meenakshi seems more sane then Rani actually, lol! She's only over the top in her dreams. Reality she's fine."
"Her granny is completely not needed in the film. She's not funny or anything."
"Overall, it's a different type of direction. A little too slow. Like there were a few times where the movie needs a jump start. But overall, sweet and watchable."
