I can see a 5 cr Saturday and 6 cr Sunday. That alone will recover costs.

Just like I said.

Thats a pretty decent weekend. The only problem is, weekdays is run by single screens. Regardless, 15 cr is a decent opening.

And I think Dibakar's best work is Oye lucky!...Movie even fetched him a national award for best film.

Saw Shanghai yesteray at the theatre! Here is a review!
I will start with the negatives in the film;
First things first...Shanghai is a slow film...and when I mean, slow...I really mean S-L-O-W! You need to have a lot of patience to sit through 114 mintues of the film, because the entire film just follows its own pace! I am a lover of serious cinema, but even I found myself figeting restlessly many a times...it is that slow!😕
Second thing...the film deals with a very specific subject, that of land-grabbing as compared to a film like Kahaani, which dealt with a much more universal subject - Terrorism! Hence, many people who are expecting to find similarities in Shanghai from that of Kahaani will be sorely disappointed!
Thirdly, Shanghai has no humor! At all! It is a painfully bleak film from start to finish...it offers no comfort, no solace...no respite...it just gives you the brutal truth about our country, our leaders and our people as it is. Barefaced and honest! The ending is not going to make your heart warm and bring tears of joy to your eyes...it will just leave you highly uncomfortable and disappointed too!
Now for the good...no, great things about the film!
The performances! Apart from Kalki Koechilin, who gives a completely one-note performance throughout the film, everyone else is just bloody outstanding!
Emraan Hashmi is a revelation! He brings the bewilderement and torment of the 'Aam Aadmi' with such pathos, that you just want to stand up and applaud him for this bravo act! If this performance doesnt' change the direction of his career, I cannot think, what else will! The scene in which he runs down a deserted street in the middle of a curfew night, holding a CPU in his hand, screaming out loud is one of the film's most brilliant moments (amongst many!) After watching Emraan in Shanghai, I for one, completely forgot (and forgave) all his earlier cheesy flicks...here is the birth of an entirely new actor!👏
The supporting cast of characters, especially Farooq Sheikh and Supriya Pathak are marvellous! Farooq Sheikh is a complete natural as the laid-back and seasoned bureaucrat, who just wants to eat good-food, life a good life and toe the lines of the CM, without ruffling any feathers! (Watch him in the climax scenes, one which has him virtually without any dialouges, and you will see what a terrific actor the guy is!) And Supriya Pathak, doing a wonderful take on Delhi CM, Sheila Dixit is brilliant, even in a brief role! She brings dignity and grace to the character of an ambitious politician and makes your bones shiver when you realize what she is really upto!
Tiltotama Shome, in a small but highly effective role, of Mrs. Ahmedi, is pretty impressive as well, playing a disillusioned wife who turns into an unexpected leader towards the end of the film!
Prasonjit and Pitobash are excellent in their roles too and so area all the minor characters! Dibakar Banerjee has always had the knack of giving a life of their own to the supporting characters and he does the same in Shanghai! The ensemble cast literally take the film to another level!
But for me, the true hero of the film, both character and actor wise, is Abhay Deol! His TA Krishnan...a morally upright and uptight, high-ranking bureacrat, who is struck between doing the right thing and protecting his own career and interests is so mesmerizing, that you just can't help being awed by his performance...which has to be his career best till now!
Abhay's character is the one who emerges to be the unlikely hero in the entire cauldron of dirty politics, murder and conspiracy...a man who is shown to be scared for his own life...yet is not able to close his eyes to the injustice happening around him. A man, who is practical enough to not jeopardize his own career yet is not hesistant to take on his seniors when it comes to exposing the reality of what is around.
He gets the nuances and details of the character to the T...and all but makes you forget the horror that Shah Rukh Khan was in Ra One, caricaturizing Tamilians all over the world!🤢 The only time Abhay slips is when he mouths dialouges in tamil...both times, as conversations over the phone! That was the only time, when I felt that he was showing effort playing his character!
Otherwise, Abhay's impeccable tamil accented English and Hindi throughout the film, to the way he keeps polishing his specs and the way he deals with the local police at the Enquiry Commission...all of it shows, not just his immense talent as an actor, but also the amount of research and hard-work that must have gone into playing this character in the film! His Krishnan is an infuriatingly quiet man and also endearingly honest and brave...and Abhay treads a fine line, between making a reluctant hero out of this mild-mannered but essentially smart IAS Officer, without turning him into some sort of a super-man, or into a wimp!
Kudos!👏
The Script and Direction - Once again, respect to Dibakar! This man is truly talented, in every sense of the word! To take a relatively simplistic story and weave it with such dexterity into a complex film is no mean feat! And Dibakar does it again! There are almost no loopholes in the film, at all...every character, every situation, every momnet in the film has a meaning...has a reason...and has an explanation! Its a very tight, taut and extremely serious film...which, I suppose is also its downfall. There can't be too many people who would appreciate and enjoy a film this serious and hard-hitting, as Shanghai is!
Overall, if you enjoy quality cinema and would watch a film, however slow and depressing, only for its performances...then go for Shanghai! ⭐️
PS: I wish our Oscar Committee has some kind of a brainwave and sends films like Shanghai for competing at the Oscars, instead of films like Paheli and Eklavya ect! That way, we stand some chance of being nominated if not actually winning! It is films like Shanghai which really represent modern-day India!

Shanghai' gets mixed response at box office

Dibakar Banerjee's "Shanghai" has opened to critical acclaim and mixed response at the box office. Trade pundits predict that the political drama will collect Rs.16 crore in the first three days of its release

June 11, 2012

Made on a budget of Rs.19 crore, including marketing and promotion, "Shanghai", according to Banerjee, broke even before its release through the sale of its satellite and music rights.

The director also said that he had to recover only Rs.4.75 crore from theatrical release to be profitable, but with Rs.16 crore earnings, it is already a profitable venture. Distributed by PVR Pictures, the film has been released with 1,200 prints and after witnessing a slow start on the first day, it picked up on the weekend.

"Friday was a little slow for 'Shanghai', but the movie picked up on Saturday and Sunday. We are expecting better response in the week ahead. Due to its serious nature, its more of a multiplex kind of film," Anant Verma, director and business head, DT Cinemas told IANS.

Rajesh Thadani, Multimedia Combines, Mumbai told IANS that the film had 15 to 20 per cent occupancy Friday. "Saturday was still better but not the way we expected. There was not a major pick up on Sunday either," he added.

Described as a slice of today's India, "Shanghai", which released Friday, boasts of a host of talented actors - from Bengali superstar Prosenjit to Bollywood actors Abhay Deol, Emraan Hashmi and Kalki Koechlin.

"Multiplexes have got a good response but single screen does not have much bookings. Theatres in South Delhi and Gurgaon have got good footfall. Delhi, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh got an opening of Rs.1.20 crore," Delhi based distributor Joginder Mahajan told IANS.

Vinay Choksey of VIP Exhibitors, Mumbai, supports Mahajan and said: "I opened with 20 to 25 percent occupancy Firday. Today also there has been an okay response."

The film is getting a tough fight from Akshay Kumar's "Rowdy Rathore" as the audiences preferring it over serious "Shanghai". "It's vacation time, families are coming together for 'Rowdy Rathore", they don't want to watch a serious film like 'Shanghai'," said Mahajan.
