Disney's Definition of a Girl

Hey guys :)

This is just something that's been on my mind for a long time now..

In every Disney series, the girls in the show always have perfect hair, perfect clothes, perfect looks, perfect friends, perfectly fit, and basically, their life is pretty perfect. Do you think their definition of a normal teenage girl is slightly twisted?

Take a look at these pictures. They are the kinds of girls who would be popular at any high school.

What if you don't have all that? Are you not normal? 😆 I'm not bashing Disney at all. It can be quite brilliant at times. I just think that they're definition of normal teenager is a little ehh :S They are not exactly portraying normal teenage problems as some think. I mean, I went to high school. Too many girls are criticized because of the way they look or dress. There's so much pressure to act and look like everyone else. The girls they show just wear all these brands (not saying brands are bad) like all the "popular" people, and they are showing only the problems that happen to girls like. Other girls have much more on there plates. Like, all the girls on DC seem to have a LOT of money. They say Bailey on SLOD is "poor," but their definition of poor must be horribly twisted.

Basically, all I'm saying is...that can a girl who's maybe not so pretty, maybe not so fit, and maybe doesn't have a great life...can someone like that relate to Disney shows?

Back with Lizzie McGuire, they showed a little bit of the real side. Lizzie wasn't so popular, and they showed lots of realistic stuff. Do you think new Disney shows are slowly pressuring girls to act and think in a different way? Do you think they're slowly dehumanizing them? I don't know why I'm taking is so personally, just. 😳😆

What do you guys think?

Let me tell you one thing though. If a girl with no looks and no perfect body went and tried out for a DC show, they just wouldn't make it.

Aish wow i really loved how you brought of this topic.

Well i guess that people will just have there own pov's but when it comes to comparing with what the reality is, i so agree with you that Disney hasn't really focused on the normal teenagers. Everyone always has something to do with the popular gurls. Even if they start with a normal teenage who aint tht pretty or popular, they slowly turn it into one of those shows.

But on the other hand i belief that it definately spread a message that no matter what others think, if you try then might be you won't be as popular or pretty as the typical "popular" kids but they will never need to feel ignorned or neglected. It kinda says that you can be special on your own. No one needs to feel low.

That's really true. Nobody needs to feel insecure.

It's just that Disney only shows one type that gets on my nerves, lol. Thanks for the reply!

It's true. I've seen ten-year-old girls who feel the need to apply makeup because it makes them look beautiful. Heck, when I was ten I didn't even know what the purpose of mascara and eye-shadow was because I was too busy getting dirty and scratched-up playing outside with my bike and my brother. Even now, I don't think you need makeup to look pretty. God made us all beautiful in one way or another and what's inside of you is what really matters. I'll tell you all right now, if I had to choose between being best friends with the cool, perfect, nasty head cheerleader and being popular or with the plain, geeky, sensitive, thoughtful math nerd and being a social outcast, I'll be an outcast any day. And I mean it. No question about it.

I agree with everything you said =O It's so stupid. When I was ten, I was having the time of my life, not caring what anyone would think. The cheerleaders that were at my high school were actually super sweet :)

Aishh, i reallyy get wat ur trying to say but u know... these definitions are really different hre in our cultures, thats y v keep comparingg ourselves or people around us to them i suppose.

And i feel even UK is different fromUS in many ways...

Obviously its a show and high budget ofcourse,so they have to show luxury and plus...

Talk about Hannah Montana, shes ouht 2 hav a luxurious home as she and her fathers a star... [they have an awesome home in forever]

den Sonny wid a chance, even theyre stars nd deir story almost only revolves around SO RANDOM... their set, room etc.

Now, on their LIFE, so almost every movie has a happy ending doesnt it?? same way... they are caught in troubles in the middle of the episode bt resolve it by the end of each 1! 😆

i think its pretty appropriate as they are shows............ u got my point naa??? 😕 😆

I totally agree. The girls on Disney are highly stereotyped. But the funny thing is that, in my school in India the most popular girls are those who drink, do hookah, use foul language and speak rudely to the teacher. The prim and properly dressed girls are actually scorned at for being so girly.

I don't belong to either...I am just someone who freely expressed my opinions without giving a damn about how people perceive me to be.

Nice one, Aish! I could go on, on this one but time's not on my side...

I agree with you on the fact that Disney prefers to display such perfection but if you look back at what Walt Disney strongly believed in, you'll understand why...

Don't you think most of us would want to be able to look and feel great about ourselves? It's wrong though to showcase egoistic traits. Mainly because the audience in question is young and gullible. Only a few, during that phase, are smart to differentiate between reality and make-belief... the rest fall into the 'perfect diva' trap.... which is absolutely wrong!

In all, I think there's work that needs to be done at both ends... Disney and parents... What do think?

Nice one Chip! But personally I really don't believe that Disney has the same charm and magic that it had when Walt Disney was the one running it :/ It feels like Disney has been tailored to adjust to the likes of the people who are currently running without keeping Walt Disney's priorities in mind.

P.S. Your first line reminded me of SPN haha :P Time Is On My Side S03E15 :P
