Mithun Da's timeless classics


On the occasion of his 60th birthday we list down some of the lesser known films of Mithun Da. Though not great hits, these films are great entertainers in their own right.




Dalaal

Remember the 'Gutar Gutar' song? It belongs to the movie we are talking about here. The movie tells the story of a naive, illiterate Bhola Nath who comes from a small village in India and later re-locates to Bombay. He lands a job with the help of an old acquaintance and is very dedicated until he finds out that he is actually working for a big time Pimp.

Zahreela

Mithun plays the character of Dushyanti who after spending 7 years behind the bars on rape charges has one new motive in life. After getting out of the jail Dushyanti targets Arun Dev and his family, the man who was responsible for sending him to jail.

Hitler

Nicknamed 'Hitler', Jailer Siddhanth Kumar Sharma is feared and respected at work as well as at home where he lives with his wife, a former lawyer, Sheila; younger brother, Amar; two younger sisters and his son. The happy family atmosphere goes for a toss when the husband and wife stand against each other, following Mithun's brother, Amar, being accused of murder. Mithun doesn't believe his brother and wants to punish him while Sheila wants to free Amar of the murder accusation.

Loha

Ever caught a bullet fired from a gun with your hand? You can learn the trick from this movie.

Mithun played Arjun in this Dharmendra-Mithun-Govinda-Manisha Koirala starrer. Mumbai's underworld forms the crux of the movie. Due to don's misdeeds; Mithun, who plays an Air Force pilot, is dishonorably discharged and then court-martial-ed.

Ilaakha

This is the story of Raja brought-up in Mumbai slums. He sells and distributes locally brewed alcohol to his crippled dad's, Bheema, clients. Raja's attempts to educate himself amidst all the hard-work fail. Raja grows up to be a gangster and alcoholic. In the course, Raja develops a close friendship with Inspector Suraj Singh. But the dosti is short-lived when Suraj finds out that Bheema killed his father, Inspector Dharam Verma.

Aakhri Gulam

'Aakhri Gulam' is a typical 80's action flick. Everything is normal, usual 80's masala. Mithun's performance and screen presence was the only saving grace in the movie. Stale script and weak music resulted into a bad box office performance. But watch the movie for Mithun Da!

Boxer

Don't be surprised if you see glimpses of Sylvester Stallone's Rocky!

Mithun, a criminal in this movie, learns boxing while serving his 6-month term in jail. He takes to boxing once he gets out of the prison. Shankar loses a game and is badly injured following which his girlfriend makes him swear never to get in the ring again. But it's Shankar's (Mithun) father Dharma, a former boxer, who wants his son to get into the ring and settle fights he had left half done.

Gunda

Shankar, a dada, decides to lead a peaceful life sans non-violence. But his aspirations are not fulfilled due to the wickedness in the society. So he starts using his 'dadagiri' for the benefit of humanity. The bad men in the society are enraged by Shankar's increasing popularity and this leads to rape of his sister and murder of his father.

Dance Dance

A M Singh (Amrish Puri) kills Ramu's (Mithun) father and keeps his mother in his palace. Ramu and his elder sister Radha (Smita Patil) are left alone to fend for themselves. The two kids survive by singing and dancing on the roadside to make some money. They grow up and form their own dance group. Radha is married while Ramu falls in love with Janita (Mandakini), who joins the dance group. Years later, the dance troupe goes to Jalpaiguri to perform for A M Singh, but no one knows what disaster is instore as the evil man has already set his eyes on Janita.

Two songs of this movie, Zuby Zuby and Halwa Wala were a great hit.



Pyar Ka Mandir


In this film, Mithun plays the role of Vijay, a responsible son who shares responsibility with his mother to bring up his younger siblings – 2 brothers and 1 sister. Vijay kills Gopal, the man responsible for cheating his mother and taking away the money belonging to them. Vijay confronts Gopal in which the latter is killed. Vijay is found guilty and sentenced to 7 years in prison. After his release, Vijay returns home to brothers who refuse to acknowledge his existence.
