Big Brother goes desi
By: Tushar Joshi
September 29, 2006

Rakhi Sawant
One of the biggest reality show franchises, Big Brother, is now coming to Indian shores. For those of you who are unaware about the show?s popularity abroad, one look on the Internet and you?ll find numerous websites devoted to fans of 32 different versions of the series, broadcasted in countries across the world.

Names kept secret

Changing Big Brother to Bigg Boss, Sony has got the show to India through the production house Endemol. The planning for this reality show has been on for months, with the task of selecting 13 participants being the most tedious.

The challenge was to find individuals ready to give up their freedom to be locked up in a house under constant surveillance.

The channel is tight-lipped about those participating on the show, and even the contestants have signed a confidentiality agreement refraining them from talking about their participation.

In the dark

However, a source working on the show spilled the beans revealing the names of some of the confirmed candidates. He said, ?Rakhi Sawant, Bhojpuri actor Ravi Kissen, Karan Wahi and Vinod Kambli are some of the confirmed names.

Karan Wahi
We had a major problem finding celebrities who have the time and willingness to sit in a house for three months. None of the contestants are aware about who else is going to be in the house with them. They?ve all been kept in the dark about the other competitors.?

Rajesh Kamath, MD, Endemol, who is producing the show, gave details about Bigg Boss? format. He said, ?We will have 13 contestants who will be put in a house for three months. They will be given a daily and a weekly task, on completion of which they earn money. Apart from basic groceries and money, they won?t be given anything else. No mobile phones, television sets or newspapers will be allowed in the house.?

Unlike the international version, the Indian format will be edited and censored. ?Keeping the viewers? sensibilities in mind, there won?t be any nudity on the show. The episode isn?t live but deferred by a day. We will edit whatever footage we get and then broadcast it.?

Stating that they would indeed take a voyeuristic approach like the international format, he added, ?We will show two people getting into a bedroom, but what happens after that will be left to the viewer?s imagination.?

Making choices

Sandiip Sikcand, chief creative director SET, said, ?It?s a ground-breaking format. Indian television hasn?t seen anything of this sort before. We have shortlisted 40 people, and will soon make the final choices.?

On the issue of editing and doing a delayed live, he said, ?The editing will be very mild. The viewers will get to watch most of what happens as it unfolds in the house.?

He also added that the show is likely to go on air in the first week of November, and will run for a duration of three weeks. The location of the set where the house will be constructed is being kept a secret from the contestants as well.

Shilpa in Bigg Boss: What to expect

Shilpa Shetty is going to host Bigg Boss' second season. During our visit to the set we tried to figure out Shilpa's role in the show.

Shilpa will not be there with the contestants 24X7. She will be having a special restroom on the sets on the first floor which was not revealed to the media. Apart from that she will also have a room from where she can watch contestants. The confession room, which is a very important room for contestants, had been kept under wraps. We got to see some glimpses though. There is a huge greenish gray sofa, the work on which is yet to be completed. Shilpa is expected to be there only for eliminations.

She will be there on the set which is constructed on 10,000 sq feet area on the ground floor of the mill near Lonavla. Roads to the sets are quite small and heavy vehicles like buses cannot even reach there. However, Shilpa has to spend an entire day to travel and then to shoot since the house is away from the city and the basic facilities too are not easily available over there.

We have learnt that Shilpa, who had experienced all this in Big Brother, is getting 4 crores for this show. Instead of Rocky. S, this time Manish Malhotra will be doing her clothes.

There are 14 contestants this time with 7 common people and 7 news makers. The list of contestants has names like Mika Singh, Shakti Kapoor, Sambhvna Seth, Raja Chaudhary, Faizal Khan, Ketki Dave, Payal Rohtagi, Sanjay Nirupam and Rahul Mahajan among others.

Shilpa Shetty's 'Bigg Boss' kick-starts, contenders promise fireworks

The second season of TV reality show "Bigg Boss" will have controversy galore. With politicians Rahul Mahajan and Sanjay Nirupam, notorious British reality TV star Jade Goody and gangster Abu Salem's companion Monica Bedi among many others, the show will make for exciting viewing over the next three months.

Fourteen contestants including television actors Ketki Dave and Rakhi Vijayan, item girl Sambhavna Seth, actors Payal Rohatgi and Monica Bedi, non-celebrity Elina apart from Jade Goody are part of the female inmates of the "Bigg Boss" house.

Among the men are model-actor Zulfi Syed, music reality show winner Debojit Saha, MTV Roadies 5.0 winner Ashutosh Kaushik, TV actress Shweta Tiwari's estranged husband Raja Chaudhry, Congress member Sanjay Nirupam, Rahul Mahajan - son of late Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pramod Mahajan and famous comedian Ehsaan Qureshi.

While all of them will be closeted in a specially designed house for three months under 24-hour surveillance, with no access to telephones or television, Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, who had won the international format of the show "Celebrity Big Brother" in 2007, will be hosting the show.

Shilpa had emerged winner despite racist remarks in "Celebrity Big Brother" by Goody, who has now come to India to "change people's perception" about her.

Also, Payal Rohatgi's reported closeness with Rahul Mahajan was also earlier this month, an alleged reason for his break-up with his wife Shweta.

The show, that kick-started late Sunday night, will air seven days a week but Shilpa will appear only in the elimination episodes each Friday, communicating with the contestants through a TV screen. Each week, one contestant will be voted out.

Bigg Boss: Abhishek Vs Mika

The first season of Bigg Boss was famous for Rakhi Sawant and Kashmeera Shah's catfights. And now it seems it is the turn of the boys as Rakhi's boyfriend Abhishek Awasthi and Mika Singh will be in the Bigg Boss's house. Since the contestants are under contract and cannot talk to the media, we spoke Rakhi about it.

About Mika, she says, "You know everyone likes to follow me all the time. They follow my way of talking, walking, behaving, style and everything. So there is no point in commenting about it. If he is going to the house then I am happy. Abhishek is a mature person and I would not like to say anything to him."

Two years back Mika forcibly kissed Rakhi in his birthday party and entered in Rakhi's bad book.

Last season proved very lucky for Rakhi as she became very famous after the show though she could not win it. Apart from getting offers of shows and films, she also confessed her love for Abhishek in the show.

Right now Abhishek is busy in his dance reality show Ek Se Badhkar Ek which is getting over soon.

The list of contestants include Mika Singh, Monica Bedi, Sanjay Nirupam, Sambhavna Seth, Shakti Kapoor, Ketki Dave, Payal Rohtagi and Raja Chaudhary. The show is starting this Sunday at 10.

Jo hoga dekha jayega: Ketki Dave's mantra

Ketki Dave is one of the 14 participants of Bigg Boss' second season. Her daughter Riddhi reveals why Ketki took up the show.

She says, "When she got this opportunity she was not ready for it but we decided if she is getting such a good opportunity and has the capacity to do it then why not. Also, she has got stereotyped due to her popular Kyunki character Daksha. It was a personal challenge for her and also a chance to grow personally."

On how her mother will deal with all the pressure, Riddhi explains, "Once people go inside the house they tend to change in different circumstances but she will remain same throughout the show. She has the jo bhi hoga dekha jayega attitude. Mom has a lot of self-belief so she should last there for a while."

Lastly, about missing her mother, she says, "Oh! I will surely miss her like anything. I am completely dependent on her for everything though we are mentally prepared that she will not be with us for 84 days .My first reaction was that now I have to take my decisions alone. She used to help me a lot in smalls things too and like all mothers she used to look after everything. When she left for Bigg Boss we were all quiet for an entire day. But now we are fine with it. We will get to see her everyday and also come to know how she is, what she is doing, etc. But sadly she will not be able to see us."

Jade Goody bids farewell to 'Bigg Boss Season 2'

Jade Goody, the celebrity from UK's reality show Big Brother, made an entry into the Bigg Boss house as one of the 14 participants on August 17th 2008.

However, her stay at the Bigg Boss house has been cut-short with an unfortunate development. Only yesterday, the results of Jade's test were out (conducted in UK before her departure to India), and the tests indicate the possibility of cancer. Jade had just stayed in the Bigg Boss house for 2 days and was looking forward to reaching out to millions of Indians through Bigg Boss Season2, to try and dispel various perceptions that exist in people's mind about her.

According to Deepak Dhar, Country Head, Endemol India, "We are shocked to hear this unfortunate news. Jade has been very brave in the face of such a difficult situation and we are extending all possible support that she requires at this stage. Our prayers are with her."

Commenting on the development, Rajesh Kamat, Chief Executive Officer of the channel, said, "It is indeed an unfortunate development and we extend full support to Jade in this hour of testing times. Jade is a strong-willed woman who's emerged victorious from many a battles. We sincerely hope that she wins this time as well."

Shilpa Shetty, the host of Bigg Boss Season2, said, ""It is unbelievable, how life is so unpredictable and finds a way to distract and derail you from your plans. My prayers are with Jade, her family in this hour, when they face one of the biggest tests of their life, in times ahead. I pray she comes out of this, soon and, stronger. Hope that she is going back with happy memories from this country."

The first episode of Bigg Boss 2 showed Jade making successful attempts to interact and make friends with all the Bigg Boss housemates and show the real her to the world. Being a bubbly individual, she was accepted by the housemates and gelled well with them.

100,000 pounds for being Goody?

This has to be the most lucrative apology ever.

According to recent reports, Jade Goody, thrown out of British TV show Big Brother last year after bullying Shilpa Shetty, is to take part in the Indian version of the show, Bigg Boss , because she wants to clear her name.

"Jade wasn't sure when she was first approached because she was worried about how the Indian housemates and public might react," a foreign tabloid quoted an unnamed source as saying. "She was really upset about everything that happened after the scandal last year. People in India were burning effigies of her in the street. But she really wants to clear her name and prove to everyone that she's not a racist."

The British celebrity is reportedly being paid 100,000 pounds (over Rs 80,00,000) for taking part in the show and has told her family that she might be away for three months. In the ultimate twist, Bigg Boss will, of course, be hosted by Shilpa.

Goody was thrown out of Celebrity Big Brother in January 2007 after some 50,000 viewers complained about her behaviour – she called the Indian actress 'Shilpa Poppadom' and mocked the way she ate. She later said she was "disgusted with herself", but denied she was racist.

'I have forgiven Jade,' says Shilpa

Jade Goody who turned Shilpa Shetty's life in the UK reality show Big Brother into a living hell by teasing, provoking and racially abusing her, met Shilpa again at the shoot of Bigg Boss 2 recently.

But, there was disappointment for those who expected heavy fireworks. For starters, Shilpa failed to recognise Jade. Although post Big Brother, Shilpa was heard saying that she has forgiven Jade despite being bullied mercilessly, was Shilpa's cold treatment a deliberate attempt by the actress to get back at Jade?

Shilpa, who is uncomfortable about the weird experience of running into her tormentor under such peculiar and ironical circumstances, laughs and says, "Never even in my wildest nightmare did I imagine that I would meet Jade again! To top it, Jade had changed her appearance completely.

During Big Brother, she had short black hair, but now she has long, blonde hair. I just could not recognise this scared, shaking woman as the same person who had taken me on for 10 days, hitting out at me and saying things like 'Go back to your slums'. That had really hit home.

In the UK, Jade was the celebrity inmate on Big Brother . She had become an overnight star after her first appearance on Big Brother . When I came into the show it was the second time for Jade," adds Shilpa. Jade's racist slur against Shilpa became an international issue. From being a reality show queen, Jade had become a disgraced contestant who had brought shame to the country.

The tables have turned now. Although Jade is still an inmate, Shilpa has moved on to become the host of the show. Shilpa recollects her meeting with Jade.

She says, "Believe me I had no malice towards Jade when I met her once again a couple of days ago. Our situation is completely different this time. While I am a free bird hosting the show, she is an inmate where she will have to stay with Indians, who I fear might be hostile to her because of how she had misbehaved with me. To my relief, the innate Indian warmth and hospitality shone through and no one made Jade feel unwanted. I felt happy about that because I have forgiven Jade. And I quite sympathise with her. I don't think she meant to insult our country and culture. But in trying to hit out at me, she ended up making statements that offended Indians and Asians all over the world. I don't think Jade knew what she was starting."

Going back to the time when she first heard Jade Goody was coming to Bigg Boss 2 , Shilpa says, "I was shocked when I learnt that Jade was going to be on the show. Why should someone want to go through this again? But then I was also happy to know she was coming to our country. This is an opportunity to show her true Indian hospitality and how warm and welcoming we are."

Whether she is a winner on the show or not, Shilpa hopes that Jade goes back to England with a better image of India than she had when they were participants in Big Brother .

"When I came out of the show, everyone's perceptions of Indians had changed for the better. I hope Jade learns about the beauty of Indian culture. She has gone in as someone with misconceptions about our country. I hope she comes out enriched and enlightened about us Indians," adds Shilpa.

Bigg Toss

The late Pramod Mahajan may have handpicked film stars and made them political heavyweights, but, Bollywood is hardly in a mood to return the favour.

His son Rahul Mahajan was recently turned away by the producers of Bigg Boss, the popular reality TV show in which he wanted to participate.

The second season of Bigg Boss is set to hit the idiot box by August 17. It is the same reality show which catapulted Ravi Kishan to national popularity in the first season.

Ironically, it was Rahul Mahajan's namesake Rahul Roy, who had won in the show in its first season. Rahul wanted to be one of the 13 participants for the second season of the show.

While a source in the production house Endemol, which is coming out with Bigg Boss to be aired on the newly-launched channel Colors, confirmed that Rahul was one of the probable 13 contenders, a reliable source in the industry said the younger Mahajan was denied the role.

"Rahul and creative heads of Endemol had a couple of meetings at Mahajan's office in Andheri. However, things did not work out," reveals the source. Another industry insider said Rahul was denied the role as the producers thought he was too controversial to be a part of the reality show.

Inspired by the format of an English reality show, Big Brother, a participants a participant has to spend 90 days with 12 others and he or she is allowed no access to the outside world. Every week, one contestant gets eliminated by public vote and the one who survives till the very end comes out the winner. Rahul was not reachable for comments despite several attempts.

Shilpa on Jade Goody

Bollywood bombshell Shilpa Shetty has revealed that she is quite shocked at Jade Goody's decision to participate in India's Big Brother, but is happy at the same time, for she'll get a chance to show her ex-rival how welcoming Indians are.

In last year's Celebrity Big Brother, the 33-year-old actress was labelled 'Shilpa Poppadom' by Goody.

Goody, who also criticized eventual winner Shetty's cooking during the show, was branded a racist and Indians burnt effigies of her in the streets.

Now, mum-of-two Goody has decided to enter Indian BB house this weekend in a bid to clear her name. The 27-year-old will also pocket a 100,000-pound fee.

"When I found out Jade was going on Big Brother India I was as shocked as when I first met her. Why go through this again," The Sun quoted show host Shetty, as saying.

"But part of me was really happy because it is an opportunity to show how welcoming we are.

"She's going in as someone who has had misconceptions about our country. I hope Jade learns first hand about our culture and how wonderful our people are," she added.

The Bigg Boss gives them a task for day 1 that is to be handcuffed with their partners. The Bigg Boss has instructed all the house mates to converse in Hindi the only exception being Payal and Jade Goody. Payal has been instructed to teach Jade Hindi. Shilpa was in 'shock' at Goody's Big Brother bid

Shilpa Shetty has expressed shock over her ex-rival Jade Goody's bid to take part in the Indian version of Britain's 'Big Brother' TV show.

Goody was thrown out of Big Brother show in Britain last year after she was shown bullying Shetty. The 27-year-old mom of two was also labelled a racist and her effigies were burnt in the streets in India.

In fact, Shetty was branded "Shilpa Poppadom" by Goody in last year's Big Brother show. However, she went into the Indian 'Big Brother' home this weekend "to clear her name and prove to people that she's not a racist".

But, Shetty was quoted by leading British tabloid The Sun as saying: "When I found out Jade was going on Big Brother India I was as shocked as when I first met her. Why go through this again?

"But part of me was really happy as it is an opportunity to show how welcoming we are. She's going in as someone who has had misconceptions about our country. I hope Jade learns first hand about our culture and how wonderful our people are."

As many as 12 celebrities are expected to take part in the show which may last upto three months.

'I will never be a part of Celebrity Big Brother again'

Says Shilpa Shetty who is hosting its Indian version Bigg Boss.

It was when she was judging Jhalak Dikhlaa Ja that Shilpa Shetty got an offer to be a part of Celebrity Big Brother. "Shamita and I were addicted to Bigg Boss by then. I remember we used to rush home to watch it," reveals Shilpa who was curious about the show she had grown fond of. A famous win and a year later, the sexy actress is back on the small-screen hosting the Indian version of the reality show Bigg Boss. Did she ever think she would win the competition? "On the contrary, I was sure I will be expelled in the first week itself. It was very difficult since I was the odd one out," confesses Shilpa who was looked at as a commoner and not an actress, by her co-contestants. Which is precisely why she thinks she will be able to connect very well with the housemates of Bigg Boss that will have a mix of celebrities and common people.

Having won the international show, what would she advice the participants ?"Just be yourselves," is her mantra to success. Staying in the house reveals a different facet to your personality according to Shilpa and ultimately it is that person whom the audience finds entertaining or interesting who emerges the winner. As to how the participants should equip themselves, materially and spiritually while entering the house, the actress suggests that to maintain a calm they should practice yoga. No, she is not trying to sell her yoga DVDs here but, "it genuinely helps your peace of mind," she avers. Since books are not allowed inside, she feels it will help, if the contestants carry pictures of loved ones. "In three days, it starts sinking into you, that you are away from your family and are on your own. You start missing them and the photos help," she says. For women, her advice is carry a lip balm, mascara, kajal and eye cream. "I don't like to be seen without make-up, so I used to even get out of the bed with these huge glasses," she smiles.

What prompts people to subject themselves to such depravation - The contestants are completely cut-off from the world. There are no phones, newspapers, televisions or music systems inside the house. "People who either want to become famous overnight or have nothing to hide from the world are the ones willing to get locked in the house," says Shilpa clarifying that it was the latter that urged her to be a part of Celebrity.. . So, is she in touch with any of her housemates? "I was in touch with a few people like Jackson but now their numbers have changed," she smiles. However, the person she remembers most from the house is, no, not Jade Goody, but Davina McCall. "I used to wait eagerly to hear her nice, warm voice everyday because after a point you get bored with the others in the house," quips Shilpa. And that's the role, she will be playing in season II of Bigg Boss. "I will be like an agony aunt. And because I have already been there and done that, I will be able to empathise bettter with the housemates. I aim to be entertaining with a human touch," she says.

To a query on who is the one person she would like to see locked in the house, Shilpa who has danced to the popular UP Bihar number promptly says Laloo Prasad Yadav. "He has a very good sense of humour and I respect him," she justifies. And would she go into the house if she was approached again? "Never, the first time I didn't know what I was getting into. I was the odd one out and it was very difficult," she reminisces. What about sister Shamita? "No," stressses Shilpa.

So what prompted her to host the show? "One, I am familiar with the format and two I couldn't refuse the offer that was made to me," she says flashing her pearly whites.

Jade Goody diagnosed with cancer, leaves Bigg Boss

Reality show Bigg Brother star and participant of the Indian version Bigg Boss, Jade Goody has been diagnosed with "cancer of the womb" and been withdrawn from the television show, a UK based tabloid has reported.

Goody received the news on Tuesday and is flying back to London for treatment, The Sun, UK has reported. She had undergone hospital tests earlier this month after she collapsed four times, it is said.

"But she decided to get into Bigg Boss to try to make amends after being accused of racism on last years Celebrity Big Brother," the report states.

Bigg Boss, Season II, is being hosted by Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty, who was allegedly racially abused by Goody in the 2007 series of Big Brother in UK.

Jade, from Upshire, Essex, was tested for bowel cancer in 2006 and ovarian cancer in 2004, but was given all-clear both times.

Sony redeems itself, Colors gets super opening

It's been an action-packed week on and off the small screen. While Akshay Kumar alongwith his 13 beauties leapt into the living rooms through a new entertainment channel Colors, there's been a reshuffle in the positioning of the general entertainment channels. In fact, each one is trying to prove its place in the number game. Star Plus continues to lead with 348 GRPs while Zee TV delivers 225 GRPs according to the TAM data for week 29. STAR Plus also claims to be bigger than two of its closest competitors (Zee and Sony) put together. Meanwhile, Zee continues its stronghold in the No.2 position but it is the third position that remains volatile.

For the last two weeks Sony has made a comeback to its No.3 position which had been shaken by new entrants NDTV Imagine and 9X. Last week Sony delivered GRPs of 99 as against 9X's GRPs of 87. Says Danish Khan, Assistant VP, Marketing, Sony, "10 Ka Dum has been consistently doing well, specially our celebrity specials. CID too continues to be our top-rated show. On weekends we have been the leaders and we are strengthening our band with block-busters and celebrity episodes of 10 Ka Dum every other week." Next week will see the Bachna Ae Haseeno team Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Minissha Lamba in Salman Khan's game-show. A kids championship is lined up in Boogie Woogie. The last time they had a kids competition in the show, the ratings had doubled and Khan hopes this championship will do the same, if not more. Also lined up is the TV premiere of Om Shanti Om. They have also got viewing rights for Akshay-Katrina starrer Singh Is Kinng.

Interestingly, Colors during its launch had announced the same titles as the major attractions on its channel. Khan explains that the movies are sold differently these days. "The premiere is with us, the second viewing will be on some other channel." In fact, the channel-driver of Colors Fear Factor - Khatron Ke Khiladi was first seen on Sony. Even their forthcoming show Big Boss had been the frontrunner for Sony when it was aired on it three years ago. Says Khan,"It is a matter of cost-benefit. Fear Factor has worked for them. We used to get a rating of 4, they are getting a rating of 2 and the cost has gone up. We are an 11- year- old channel and we work on a profit basis. A new channel makes illogical investment to get noticed and hopes to recover it differently. For instance, Mahabharat on 9X will be 4-6 times costlier than a Sony show."

Even as Sony gets upbeat about their positioning, Colors is celebrating one of the best openings in recent times. While NDTV Imagine launched with 55 GRPS and 9X delivered 21 GRPs in the first week of its launch, Colors has had a phenomenal beginning with 81 GRPs. Rajesh Kamat, CEO, is visibly excited. "Our strategy of differentiative and disruptive programme backed by a huge marketing campaign and good distribution has given us enouraging opening," he smiles. Fear Factor is their disruptive primetime programming that has appealed to audiences across age groups and delivered a rating of 2. "People thought it would appeal to the15 - 24 age group but 4 + audiences are watching and enjoying the show," says Kamat.

Their other show that has become the talking point is Balika Badhu, which averaged at 0.9 with the peak rating of 1.2. The channel has reached 36.4 million viewers with five-and-a-half days of programming. With Big Boss anchored by Shilpa Shetty to be aired in place of Fear Factor after it's over, Kamat is confident that they will continue to grow in the slot. Though reality shows attract and spike the ratings, Kamat is aware that it is fiction that will bring loyalty and 'stickiness', which he hopes Mohe Rang De and Jai Krishna will bring. These shows got a rating of 0.9.

Meanwhile, 9X which has been dethroned from being No.3 by Sony feels that the Nos. 3 to 6 positions will keep shuffling in the coming weeks now. As Indrani Mukerjea, CEO, 9X, puts it, "We are very happy with our stable all- round growth across weekdays and weekends and all day parts." But the battle for No.3 will get more hot in the coming weeks.

Who will replace Jade Goody?

27-year-old Jade Goody has left the Bigg Boss house! After receiving the devastating news that she was diagnosed with cervical cancer Jade departed from the house. A traumatized Jane left the entire viewers in a tizzy.

Who would replace Jane Goody? Would it be an international flavor or would the choice be an Indian? The earlier speculations which lay buried post the inmates walked into the house re-surfaced leaving names being taken out of the hat and considered.

A close source, on condition of anonymity from the production house states that the names of our 'Fearless Factor Extreme' girls are being considered. And a name that kept surfacing often was Pooja Bedi, of course in hushed whispers!

The 'hot momma' when contacted said, "Nothing is confirmed as yet. However, I will not be a participant on the show. I've shared a good relation with the channel and the production house and have always enjoyed working with them."

Another hot contender in the pipeline is Sherlyn Chopra, the item girl who has locked horns with Rakhi Sawant. Known for her flamboyance and boldness, her publicist, Dale Bhagwagar said in an official release, "For Sherlyn to say 'yes' to 'Bigg Boss', she needs a great incentive." "She will agree to be on the show only if she gets what she deserves to be away for a full three months from the promotions of her latest musical success 'Dard-e-Sherlyn'," he added.

Sherlyn was earlier approached for the show, but she was dropped because she had asked Endemol India, the production house, to pay her Rs.30 million for her stay in the "Bigg Boss" house. She had even asked the production house to allow cameras to be installed in the bathrooms of the house so that she could flaunt her vast collection of colourful bikinis and inner wear while bathing.

The publicist, however, made it clear that "Sherlyn won't be interested in the show without the perks."

The question now arises as to who will replace Goody. The show will go on, but who will fill the void left wide open by Jade Goody. Will the list of speculated names show its colors? Will it be Fearless Pooja or item songstress, Sherlyn Chopra.

Unanswered questions to which Deepak Dhar, Head, Endemol India remained unavailable for comment.

My prayers are with Jade Goody

Shilpa Shetty, hostess of the TV show "Bigg Boss", said she was shocked to hear that British reality TV star Jade Goody, had been diagnosed with cancer. "It is unbelievable how life is so unpredictable and finds a way to distract and derail you from your plans. My prayers are with Jade, her family in this hour, when they face one of the biggest tests of their life, in times ahead.

"I pray she comes out of this soon, and stronger. Hope that she is going back with happy memories from this country," Shilpa said in a statement released Tuesday on behalf of Endemol India, the production house of the show.

Goody, who was accused of racist slur against Shilpa in British reality show "Celebrity Big Brother" in 2007, made an entry into the "Bigg Boss" house Sunday night along with 13 Indian participants. Pleasant and sans the attitude that we saw on Big Brother, Goody in fact received a nickname - "Guddi" - from the other inmates.

27, and a mother of two, is currently in London undergoing treatment for cervical cancer.

Said Deepak Dhar, country head of Endemol India: "We are shocked to hear this unfortunate news. Jade has been very brave in the face of such a difficult situation and we are extending all possible support that she requires at this stage. Our prayers are with her."

Added Rajesh Kamat, CEO of Colors channel, on which the show is aired: "It is indeed an unfortunate development and we extend full support to Jade in this testing time. Jade is a strong-willed woman who has emerged victorious from many battles. We sincerely hope that she wins this time as well."

Before entering the house, she said: "I have to pay my bills. And if I do face cancer, I need to make sure I can support the boys." She even offered to go back on the show after surgery. Jade wanted to make amends for alleged racist jibes at Shilpa Shetty on Celebrity BB in 2007.

According to a report by thesun.co.uk, the scenes when the news was broken to Goody were not aired at the time and will also not be broadcast in India in the next episode. However, there was speculation over whether the footage will be aired in Britain.

Shilpa, "I never in my wildest nightmare expected to meet Jade Goody again And on top of that, Jade had changed her appearance completely During Big Brother she had short black hair Now she has long blonde hairI just couldn't recognize this scared shaking woman as the same person who had taken me on for ten days, hitting out at me with pointedly with a statement like, GO BACK TO YOUR SLUMS

" says Shilpa, a tad bit uncomfortably about her dredging up the past and running into Goody in such peculiar and ironical circumstances.

A warm Shilpa Shetty added, "Our situation was completely different this time While I was a free bird hosting the show, she was an inmate among a group of my fellow-Indians who I feared might be hostile to her because of how she had behaved with me. To my relief the famed Indian warmth and hospitality came out and no one made Jade feel unwanted. I personally feel no malice towards Jade at all.

I am not magnanimous, but I forgive her for her behavior. And in this hour of need, I sympathize her. I don't think she meant to insult our country and culture. But in trying to hit out at me, she ended up making statements that offended Indians and Asians all over the world."

http://www.tellywatch.com/telly_news/bigg_boss_jade_goody/august-20-2008/bigg_boss_jade_goody_shilpa_shetty__colors_season_2__endemol_india.html

Bigg Boss shows what true hospitality is all about!

In an episode with a difference, Bigg Boss shows leniency to Jade Goody. And in a surprise change, an announcement echoes through the house proclaiming that the second episode will have a touch of warmth in the reality show. Elaborating further, the rules claimed that this week, Jade and her partner would escape the nomination 'chakkar'.

Jade is teamed up with Payal Rohatgi.

The season hasn't kick started and there is already names up for eviction - Sanjay Nirupam and Raja Chaudhry being in the hot list . And whilst Sanjay and Raja sweat it out, Jade is having a blast learning to shake a leg with the Helen of Bhojpuri films, Sambhavna Seth on Mehebooba...Mehebooba...and getting into the spirit of the 'Hindi' language, Payal helps Jade to learn to speak Hindi.

And for all those who questioned Rahul Mahajan's decision to head into the Bigg Boss, catch him with a broom stick as he takes over the chores of manning the bathroom and the toilets. He readily jumped up to the chore because cooking was something he said, was best left to the masters of culinary art!

The junior Mahajan could do a lot better than being caught with a broom in his hand!

When Jade and Shilpa met...

Shilpa Shetty kick started her introduction with..."Hum bolega toh bologe ki bolta hai. I can recall three movies "Main Chup Rahungi" "Kab tak Chup Rahungi" and "Mere Awaz Suno"...And after tongue in cheek introduction, she threw the floor open for Jade Goody, a nemesis from her Big Brother days.

And Jade took the floor with a statement, " People of India have seen a small amount of me. I want them to see more of me. They don't know what actually happened between Shilpa and me. The media just blew things out of proportion. I want people to know who the real Jade Goody is. I have come here to prove myself as a person and who I am… am not a racist". I have gone through a lot in life.

Shilpa: Long time…18th months… You look so different…Your hair…You had short hair.

Jade: They are extensions.

Shilpa: I would like to say Jade is the first international guest of Bigg Boss. Not only that this is her third time in the house. What made you take sucha decision ?

Jade: People of India have seen a small amount of me. I want them to see more of me, as you know…

Shilpa: India has not recognized her…they have just seen one side of her personality.

She wants people of India to recognize her, know her personality and character. So I would like to welcome you (Jade) on behalf of all audiences from India and hope You are able to change their perception and like to wish you a very best.

Jade: Thanks

Shilpa : Most importantly I have to tell you something…Jade if you get into a fight in the house or something happens in the house…..you never know…

I want to teach you something that you can use in the house. It's called "Jadoo Ki Jhappi" Everyone knows about it. It's called the 'Magical Hug'.

Jade: I want lots of hugs. I am going to be missing my children I will find it hard to communicate with people and you know I am a businesswoman and a mother so I can't be that bad.

Shilpa: If you don't understand something in the house I think you should go to somebody and ask them to translate.

Jade: I will

Shilpa: Because language will be in HindiHindi main hi bola jayega ghar main

She will face loads of difficulties. So I want people who are staying in the house to help her out. So you know the difficulty I faced when I was locked away in Big Brother.

I am happy to see you and I salute your spirit. Jade You have a "never say die attitude" that's what make you the person you are. And you will always be successful. I wish the best for you Jade.
Shilpa: So all those misconceptions… So I am giving you this "Jadoo Ki Jhappi" (Hugs Jade) so you can use it in the house.

Jade: That's what I am going to do.

Shilpa: Welcome Jade into the Bigg Boss House.

Jade: Thank you.

Jhanvi, Faisal dumped by Bigg Boss;Jane Goody roped in

It's been the classic case of 'crying foul' because the latest buzz is Jhanvi Kapoor and Faisal Khan, Aamir Khan's brother have been reportedly been shown out of the show even before the show kick started. And it is reported that the contestants have decided to take a legal recourse to satiate their trampled egos. So much so that Jhanvi has even lodged a complaint against Colors (channel) and Endemol (production house) at Oshiwara police station.

When we contacted a disturbed Jhanvi, she said, "I didn't want to take it up. But, I went with the flow because my mother convinced me! And because of Bigg Boss2 I didn't take up any other assignments. But, the production house decided to pull the rug and hit me below the belt and without a reason told me I was out of the show. I have filed a N.C against the channel and Anand Chauhan of Endemol." Talking about her future course of action, she says, "I am planning to put a stay on the airing of the show. I will try to join Faisal Khan to move the court."

Faisal Khan, on the other hand, claims that his brother Aamir Khan has put pressure on the production house and channel. Succumbing to the pressure, Endemol decided to show him the door. We tried contacting Faisal but his phone has been temporarily disconnected.

But, a close source says, Jane Goody who became a national villain after she targeted Shetty with racist taunts and earned the Bollywood star a fan following across two continents, is reportedly being paid 100,000 pounds to take part in the show called Big Boss. The two were inmates of Big Brother house during the British series.

For Jade, it's a chance to show that she is not a racist," a source close to her was quoted as saying by British media.Goody's bullying of Shetty led to more than 50,000 complaints to television watchdog Ofcom and the British leadership, including Gordon Brown, who was then Chancellor, was forced to defend the country as a land "of fairness and tolerance".

Her friends insist she will be able to turn her image around by appearing on the new show which starts on August 17. "She is the first to admit that she did have her problems with Shilpa, but this will be like a role reversal and a chance to show India and the world what she is really like," a source in the British media is said to have reported.

Jade Goody shattered

Jade Goody was back home on Tuesday from India. She is consulting her doctor for treatment. Goody reached Upshire yesterday. According to UK papers her ex- boyfriend Jack Tweed is taking care of her and her sons.

Her ex-boyfriend quotes in Brit papers: "To be honest, she is fine. She is obviously upset. But all she wants to do now is go to sleep. It's completely devastating but we don't want to talk now. Jade is all over the place."

She returned to her local hospital, Princess Alexandra in Essex and had done a few tests before entering this reality show. After coming back from hospital, Jade held her hands to her face and said nothing as she arrived. Jack put an arm around her as they walked to the front door. Jade checked a text message as the door was unlocked.

A neighbour said, "She looked extremely upset and was crying. She didn't say anything and seemed a bit dazed. 'I asked how she was, but Jade just gave a courteous smile. Jack said 'she is ok, thanks' and that they were going to the hospital.'"

Jade's children Bobby, five, and Freddie, three, are being cared for by family and friends.

However while coming to house, Jade was crying and visibly distressed at the wheel of her silver Bentley. Jack, 21, was in the passenger seat.

Before entering the house, she said, "I have to pay my bills. And if I do face cancer, I need to make sure I can support the boys." She knew there was "a strong chance" she had cancer before flying to India — but said she needed the 6 crore 50 lakhs (1, 00,000 Euro) show fee to support her two sons.

Her house mates also wished her that she can get back to house even after surgery if she wishes so. He has already had two previous cancer scares.

Pooja Bedi to monitor Bigg Boss contestants

Pooja Bedi will be monitoring tasks given by Bigg Boss to contestants in the show. Pooja, who has just finished her reality show Khatron Ke Khiladi, confirmed the news.

Pooja informs, "I am in talks with Endemol. They have approached to me. I cannot reveal much about it but I am not going to enter the house as a contestant. It is something different and special. I think I should not talk about it, as so far I have not signed any contract with them. So by Saturday I think I will get a better picture."

The buzz is that Pooja will be there outside the house and will keep a close watch on the activities of all contestants in the show and whether they are violating rules of the house.

Last season, there was no one, apart from Arshad Warsi, who was in touch with the contestants. Arshad too, like Shilpa, was present during the eliminations every week.

Before this Jade Goody, who was diagnosed with cancer, left the house two days back. Now there are only 13 members in the house and most likely another female member Sherlyn Chopra or Janhvi Kapoor is expected to replace her.

Before Khatron Ke Khiladi, she also participated in Nach Baliye 3 and used to host a talk show.

Monica Bedi's Big chance

The controversial Monica Bedi, one of the contestants of Bigg Boss 2, could not control her emotions on the show and revealed her reasons for entering the house.

This is the first time that Monica Bedi is making an on screen appearance after she got bail in the passport forgery case. She is trying hard to re-establish herself and gain some sympathy. On the very second day she revealed how she had a very stressful time in jail and had to accept spiritual path to cope with it.

On the third day while talking about her reasons to be inside the house she said that she wanted to do this role to show how she is in reality and that all stories about her are false. Another reason she explained is she does not have any money and not even a house. She wants to win this show and buy a house in Mumbai. She wants to get her respect back for her parents. Nobody is ready to trust her. People are not even ready to give her a house on rent. With teary eyes she said that it is hard to regain faith.

However, before coming into the house, Monica performed on a recent Bollywood number. She had also quoted that she wants to start work and is waiting for it.

Guddu Dhanua, who is keen to work with actress, says, "I think this show will be 100% prove beneficial for Monica. I still want to work with her. I have not seen the show but my relatives have seen it. They called me and told me that she is doing a good job in the show. She surely wants to get back in Bollywood. I think this show will give her the confidence and offers too. By the end of this show, she would have managed to get what she wanted."

Meanwhile, the police authorities have asked makers for the footage of all episodes as they think Monica is likely to open up about her and Abu Salem's past. Moreover it is said that the Bhopal cell authorities too are worried about what she talks in the show as she spent lots of days over there.

Sanjay Nirupam and Raja Chaudhary are the major contenders to get eliminated early.

Insults rain in on the Bigg Boss;Rahul ideates on bringing in high TRP's

Goodbye bonhomie and welcome the insults and slurs which have started playing peek a boo in the Bigg Boss house. Post the Jade Goody hugs and kisses, it was a lull before the storm set in. And the storm brewed from the camp of Sanjay Nirupam.

Sanjay Nirupam, who is currently in the hot contender for eviction is falling back on insults and slurs. Probably the pressure of not knowing what is in store has him on the edge. And, the cutting edge surfaced when he was reading Rahul's palms and made a statement, " If it was not for his father he would have been a zero."

A visibly upset Rahul immediately vacated the scene. Later on, he was bitching about Sanjay to Zulfi Sayed and Ashutosh Kaushik.
/>
Rahul wasn't the only one to feel the sting of his words. Bigg Boss 2 contestant Sambhavna Seth was very upset after Sanjay Nirupam insults and degrades her. The flamboyant diva insists on talking to the Bigg Boss team. After the talk, the curious housemates, with nothing really better to do ask her what happened inside, to which she replies, "Bigg Boss said there is someone in the house who likes me, but is not saying. I have to find out who that is."

Then she hints that it is Raja, Ashutosh or Zulfi, and everyone starts guessing who it could be…

And whilst insults and slurs and match making plots are being hatched, Mahajan junior has a ace up his sleeve to ace up the TRP's. When Payal requests Bigg Boss if they can get the swimming pool cleaned up so they all can swim…to that effect Rahul says Bigg Boss to please clean up the swimming pool so we can get these girls wearing bikinis and the TRP's will go high because of that…

The happy man in the household was Debojit who is granted his wish of an electrical Tanpura, which we are not too sure if Debojit should actually get. A musician's life is his music. We saw shades of restlessness and as Goody called it, "craziness" when Debojit did his riyaaz sans the instrument. Was this the first milestone to Debojit's downfall? Will the Tanpura save him and help him retain his sanity?

http://www.tellywatch.com/telly_news/bigg_boss_colors/august-20-2008/bigg_boss__colors_endemol_viacom18_reality_show_sanjay_nirupam_rahul_mahajan.html

Bigg Boss shows Sanjay the door

The recent episode Sanjay Nirupam, who is a participant in the 'Bigg Boss' reality show along with controversial starlet Monica Bedi and others, had declared he would help the actor in purchasing a house in Mumbai. 'When we get out of this show, I will get you a house in Lokhandwala where all the Bollywood people stay or anywhere else you want,' Nirupam stated during the episode aired Wednesday night. He vowed to do so when gangster Abu Salem's companion Monica spoke about her dire need for money to buy a house in India's financial capital.

Sanjay Nirupam, handpicked by Bal Thackeray in 1996 to represent the party in the Rajya Sabha and propagate the party view point in the Parliament, he resigned from the Shiv Sena in March 2005 and joined the Congress party a month later. His resignation was seen a result of long standing rivalry and hostilities with the late Pramod Mahajan.

As the countdown to the second season of reality show Bigg Boss began, one surprise name that came out in the open was Sanjay Nirupam, the former MP who has signed up for the reality show which leaves nothing to imagination once cameras start rolling.

But this week's eviction name had Sanjay Nirupam's name on it. Sanjay and Raja Chaudhry's name were looming large, but Raja escaped by marginal votes. The nascent slurs and insults on the housemates had just about starting to surface with Sanjay Nirupam calling junior Mahajan a zero...

With the politician out of the race, the atmosphere at the Bigg Boss household is tense. Junior Mahajan did see a threat to his position with Sanjay around. 'Politicians are wily creatures...' it takes nerves of steel to become one!

Sanjay remained unavailable for comment.

Bigg Boss 2 creates big bang on TV

The show grabbed headlines for its controversial housemates

The business of reality television has never been better, with real life drama magnified on screen. And with a brand new bag of tricks, a house full of volatile guests and a brand new host to boot Bigg Boss 2 is raking in the TRPs.

Actor and former housemate of Bigg Boss season one, Rakhi Sawant shares her view about the show and Bigg Boss' house.

"Bigg Boss' rules can break one's back. No one's an actor or a politician in this house, everyone is treated like the common man. And one gets to know what is real life," she says.

Bigg Boss 2 debuted with a TRP of 1.5 on Sunday night which is impressive for Colors, a channel which is hardly a month old.

With 32 cameras in one house monitoring 14 housemates, 24x7 ' the international format is still going strong and Bigg Boss Season 2 in India clearly grabbed headlines for its controversial housemates.

It all started with Shilpa Shetty being announced as the host for the show. Shetty made international news as a participant in the UK's Celebrity Big Brother and walked away with the prize money.

But what really made heads turn was the inclusion of Shetty's Celebrity Big Brother rival Jade Goody as a participant on Bigg Boss 2.

However, the biggest twist came on Tuesday morning when news leaked that Jade Goody had been diagnosed with cancer and would have to leave the Big Boss' house to return to London. Even this new development was lapped up by the media ' doing well for the show's popularity.

"Everybody is worried about Jade Goody's cancer. Millions of Indians are praying for her swift recovery and are hence watching the show. It's a godsend for the show, but I would say they've got the big bang for the small buck," says media critic, Anil Thakraney.

The show has gained immense popularity and the audience is hooked on the drama.

"It's an excellent show and a good way to make people interact with each other," says a viewer. "This time the house and its environment is better than the last season," adds another. "It's a very interesting and entertaining show, I watch it religiously from 10 to 11 in the night," says one.

With all the publicity and controversies, the question is with the initial push, can the show sustain itself for three months? Will there be an interesting replacement for Jade Goody? And will the show put Colors among the top players the General Entertainment Channels? Only time will tell.

Sambhavana: 'Goody the crab'

And Rahul Mahajan gets a warning in Bigg Boss 2 Episode 5

The episode begins with the wake-up alarm, to which all the housemates start dancing. Sambhavana finds a crab in the house and decides to name it 'Goody the crab'. She goes to the extent of telling everyone that if they're missing Goody, they should see the crab in the glass!

When Sambhavana and Alina are cooking, Rahul Mahajan comes in and says, "I think we all should buy this house." Sambhavana replies, "I woke up last night and could hear voices. Then I realised you guys might be up, but then I saw everyone in the house was sleeping'I could still hear voices. I guess there's a bhoot in the house but they will not be able to see the bhoot on camera'. Rahul said, "Haan TV par bhoot nahi dikhata."

The third task: Paper Dance

Raja has to make pairs of a girl and a boy, and they have to dance on the paper with their respective partners'. Raja is supposed to be the judge, but Sanjay Nirupam refuses to do the task and requests everyone including Bigg Boss that he can't do something like that. Bigg Boss agrees and tells Raja to interchange their roles'.

The pairs are as follows'

Sambhavana with Zulfi
Alina with Debojit
Monica with Rahul
Payal with Ahsaan
Ketki with Ashutosh
Rakhi with Raja.

Payal and Ahsaan are the first pair who fail to do the task, while Rakhi and Raja are the winners.

Bigg Boss 2 gives the first warning to Rahul Mahajan: If Rahul instigates the housemates to revolt against the rules and forces them to remove their mikes for not getting cigarettes, he will be automatically nominated for eviction.

http://www.buzz18.com/news/bigg-boss2/sambhavana-goody-the-crab/76971/0

What's Rahul Mahajan's plan at Bigg Boss?

He seems hyperactive, too eager to please

He was perhaps the biggest surprise when the Bigg Boss 2 line up was announced. Son of a politician and a socialite with a rather colourful and eventful past, one would have thought Rahul Mahajan's background is a little too elitist for Hindi reality television material.

Rahul wants housemates in a bikini

But the guy seems to have taken to the format of the show pretty well. Unlike other housemates who are constantly whining and complaining, Rahul has brought a touch of goofiness to the show. How audiences react is something only the future episodes will reveal.

Rahul fixes the bathroom

From day one Rahul's been trying to project himself as the smooth operator of the house trying to be a hit with the ladies. When the girls were quarreling about the toilets, Rahul did some timely firefighting. And he volunteered to fix the loos after giving a graphic description of his actions which nearly brought the house down. Rahul was also extra friendly towards Jade Goody.

On day two Rahul went into overdrive cracking joke after joke. Quite strange considering Ahsaan Qureshi is a pro at stand up comedy - Who by the way didn't look too amused with Rahul's humour. Rahul's body language is relaxed and he is very comfortable with the hidden camera.

WATCH: Rahul talks to the camera

On day three the actor within Rahul wakes up. For some reason he starts talking to the CCTV camera about how the show is getting high TRPs. Later he tries a solo act of sorts going on talking endlessly with the hidden camera. On day four Rahul has brought his father's angle into the plot as Sanjay Nirupam reads Rahul's hand and talks about his influence in Rahul's life.

Rahul keeps the housemates entertained

So, there it is. From emotion to comedy, Rahul's doing it all and looks all set to become the star of the show. What's he going to do next?

Payal Rohatgi missing Jade

She could not complete her task of teaching Goody some Hindi

The gorgeous Payal Rohatgi is back in the news. The actress, known for her performances in Corporate, 36 China Town and Dhol, has made her first appearance on Indian television with Bigg Boss 2.

Payal was asked to partner the first international participant on the show, Jade Goody. She was given the task of teaching Jade how to speak Hindi. Payal had to be with Jade for the next 100 hours in the Bigg Boss 2 house.

However, Payal's task was cut short with Jade's departure. The news came as an unpleasant surprise to Payal. Even before she could get to know her, she lost a good friend in Jade. Nonetheless, she prays for Jade's speedy recovery and hopes to meet her again once out of the house.

Payal's forthcoming film this year is Dil Kabaddi with Irrfan Khan, Rahul Bose and Soha Ali Khan.

Rahul Mahajan wants housemates in a bikini

Housemates are missing Jade Goody in the beginning of Episode 4. All of them wish her well and promise to keep in touch after Bigg Boss 2 gets over.

Bigg Boss gets Debojit's electrical tanpura but asks calls Ashutosh to give it to him. Ashu is also informed that the housemates will get their food supply on Wednesdays.

Payal Rohatgi requests Bigg Boss if they can get the swimming pool cleaned up so they all can swim'and Rahul Mahajan in his style says, "Bigg Boss please clean up the swimming pool, so we can get these girls to wear bikinis and the TRPs will go high'!"

Bigg Boss announces the basic rules that the housemates have to follow. For instance:
Waking up when the alarm rings, completing the tasks allotted, not discussing nominations, speaking only in Hindi, and keeping in mind that the store room is open only for 15 minutes and hot water is there only for one hour after the alarm.

Later, Sanjay Nirupam becomes a palmist and starts reading Rahul's hands, telling him that if it were not for his father Pramod Mahajan, he would have been a zero. Rahul, Zulfi and Ashutosh start a discussion on this comment by the politician.

The second task by Bigg Boss: Housemates have to sit together and answer a list of questions (given below) in three minutes:

From where have you come? / Where do you belong to?

What is the most important moment of your life?

One thing that changed your life

Reason for being in Bigg Boss 2

Why do you want to win the prize money?

After this, it's an open forum, where the housemates ask questions to each other, but only till the time the alarm rings.

What is Monica Bedi's problem?

It's impossible for her to rent a house in Mumbai

Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam, who is a surprise participant in the Bigg Boss 2 reality show along with controversial starlet Monica Bedi and others, Wednesday declared he would help the actor in purchasing a house in Mumbai.

When we get out of this show, I will get you a house in Lokhandwala where all the Bollywood people stay or anywhere else you want," Nirupam stated during the episode aired Wednesday night.

He vowed to do so when gangster Abu Salem's companion Monica spoke about her dire need for money to buy a house in India's financial capital. She also shared her ordeal in dealing with people in Mumbai, who are wary of her due to her proximity with Salem. She said, "The prize is very important. It holds a lot of meaning for me. People think Monica Bedi has a lot of money. But it is not so. I need this money to buy a home. Nobody gives me a house on rent also because people are scared of me.

"I am here to change the image that the media has made in the public about me. I want them to know the real Monica. I am not as bad as people think I am. And I want to do it more for my parents more than for myself," Monica added. The actor burst into tears and added: "I am grateful to Bigg Boss 2 for letting me be on this show, through which I can reveal my real self."

Nirupam and Monica, along with 11 others, are competing for the Rs 750,000 the winner will receive after spending three months closeted in a house sans any communication with the outside world.

Do we need checks on Reality TV?

The judges' caustic comments can send people into deep depression

From back biting, to heart burn, to blatant display of affection and arrogance. The phenomenon of reality shows on Indian television is now entering a whole new level. And with season two of Big Boss already on air, viewers can once again sit in their drawing rooms and peep into bedrooms for a slice of the candid.

Reality television has moved on from rooting for the underdog through SMS votes to riding high on voyeurism. While the audience is entertained by the incessant bickering between participants or even the on-air bonding, show producers are rubbing their hands with glee for all its worth. However, one can't forget the case of 16-year-old Shinjini Sengupta - the girl who suffered a paralytic attack after being allegedly humiliated on a reality dance show.

Cases like Shinjini's are a reality check on this growing obsession with the circus of reality television. While reality shows are entertaining, one can't overlook the fact that the shows are about real people and can get carried away at times.

Her exit from the show means someone else?s entry, and one possibility is that rising star Sherlyn Chopra may replace Jade on the show. Sherlyn asked for a sum of Rs 3 crore for an appearance of three months, and also made some other outrageous demands.

The identity of the new entrant has been kept under wraps, there is no truth in the second story that choreographer-director Farah Khan will substitute Jade. However, Farah is going to be on the show for a day.
Pooja Bedi is on the verge of signing a contract with ?Bigg Boss 2?. According to sources,Bedi ain?t replacing Goody, but will get into a critic mode and will be analysing performances of the participants.

  • Not Jade Goody's 'cup of tea'?

With 32 cameras in one house monitoring 14 housemates, 24x7 ? the international format is still going strong and Bigg Boss Season 2 in India clearly grabbed headlines for its controversial housemates.

Even this new development was lapped up by the media ? doing well for the show's popularity.

Sanjay's claim , "I nominated myself to be ousted"
by Meenakshi Shankar
Aug 25, 2008, Mumbai

The Congressman created waves when he became the first politician to take part in Bigg Boss. Hushed whispers made rounds on the reason why a 'done to death' politician was in a reality show. We caught up with the Congressman minutes after he was ousted from the show and his first statement was -

"I am very happy...I nominated myself to be ousted from the show.

Contrary to the popular belief that I was in Bigg Boss for a long run, I cannot afford to be away from my political commitments for a stretch of three months. When I entered the Bigg Boss, I knew that it was a short gap arrangement. My party people, my religious commitments which I hold annually - like the Dahi Handi, Ganesh Mahautsav, Chaat puja...all these functions require my presence.

I am a busy man and when we had to take a nomination call, I pushed myself to be nominated."

A popular saying, "A wily politician knows how to play with his words." Is Sanjay Nirupam playing with his words or is he covering his shock behind a statement is a million dollar question which Sanjay chose to evade.

I am a people's person. I cannot be away from my public. I nominated myself to be locked away in Bigg Boss because I want to educate the masses on what a politician's life is all about. I have nothing to hide and I want the world to know...

At some level, I am No 1 in Bigg Boss...it takes gumption to nominate yourself and be evicted in the first week and more so, when practically the whole world is tuned into watching ever move.

About the tiff with Sambhava,I've never met an item girl before. Thus I was keen to meet one. tem girls are not known for this and this is what I wanted to know from her. Unfortunately, she thought that I was insulting her and so took offense to it. However, in her anguish I got my answer.

And I am not paying for Monica Bedi's house, neither am I donning the role of a god father to her. Monica has had a troubled past and she expressed a desire to resurrect her career...I am a people's person. I will help her.

As for his soured equation with Rahul Mahajan, he defends by saying, Pramod Mahajan and I were political adversaries. However, that does not have anything to do with my equation with Rahul. It's for the junta to decide who's wrong and who isn't.

There are a lot of contenders for the Bigg Boss. I have no clue who would emerge as the winner. So I am going to stick with the cliched line - let the best man/woman walk away with the crown.

A taste of being a celebrity is not new to me. As a politician, I am used to being in the limelight. The moment I stepped out of the Bigg Boss, my family and my party people, at the same time, grabbed my attention. So, being on TV as a part of a reality show is not new to me. My life is a reality show...

What is on Bigg Boss agenda?

by Meenakshi Shankar

Aug 25, 2008, Mumbai

The weekend saw the first eviction out of the Bigg Boss.

The week unfolds with the nominations where the second nominations takes place. The housemates are getting comfortable with each other. The so called camps are being formed, invisible ofcourse, but the chemistry and the friction is surfacing and is hard to miss.

Being locked away in the Bigg Boss does not mean that you can escape the Indian festivities...riding the Janmashtami wave, all the girls are given the task to nominate their Krishna through a secret ballot….The nominated Krishna will decide his Radha and the other girls will be his 'gopiyas'…

Bigg Boss decides to stretch the whole festivity fever for two whole days wherein the house mates have to stay in their costumes and have to break into the 'raas-garba' performance everytime the music sets off.

The results were announced and Rahul Mahajan was chosen by the girls to play the role of Lord Krishna…Rahul chose Payal to play the role of Radha in the task.

The other girls fritter around as 'gopiyas'. Are they upset with Rahul's choice...why did Rahul chose Payal...is something brewing between the duo. Locked away in the Bigg Boss, with just each other for company...you form relations...volatile or otherwise...the answers would trickle down as the days go by!

/>And Rahul seems to be taking the role of Krishna a tad bit too seriously. Our MTV roadies warrior, Ashutosh has a near breakdown because there hasn't been a drop of milk for the last two days.

Black tea or coffee is a difficult brew to drink for someone who is used to having his/her cuppa tea or coffee in a latte form.In our warrior pounces on his dairy ration, the moment he sets his sight on the carton of milk. But all hell breaks loose when Rahul warns the roadies winner from doing so and in a moment of frustration, Ashutosh starts yelling and screaming...

Bring on the fights...as Bigg Boss shows you the meaner side of our news makers.

Nothing surprising about Nirupam's ouster

Sanjay Nirupam was eliminated from Bigg Boss's second season yesterday (August 22), However, Sanjay was supposed to be inside the house only for a week or so.

Before going inside the house, Sanjay said, "I am going inside the house to show my real side and I will not play any politics." But it said that Sanjay had been promised that he will stay there for two weeks at the most and not more than that. In fact he was not willing to be a part of the show but, after being promised of being evicted within two weeks, he agreed to do the show.

Inside the house too, he interacted less with his house mates. In fact two days before getting out of the show, he created a ruckus with item girl Sambhavna Seth over her clothes. He also promised that he will help Monica Bedi to get a house, which she is not getting because of her image.

But after getting out he said, he was not comfortable in the house and wanted to get out of there. Now he is feeling relaxed. He also mentioned that he faced a generation gap problem and felt left out as none of them were from his field.

Politicians like Ram Vilas Paswan and Ramdas Aathavale's name were also in race, but it was finally Nirupam who went inside the house on his conditions. Sanjay also said that now he will enjoy Dahi Handi after coming out of the show which is a big festival for political parties.

Raja Chaudhary and Sanjay Nirupam were the main contenders for early eviction.

A special interview with Shilpa Shetty

Despite being in Bollywood for over a decade, it was the international reality show Big Brother that brought fame to Shilpa Shetty. In a chat with BBC, the actress spoke about her success, her career, hosting and also some personal stuff.

Today you have become a big star. Do you think your achievements are a slap in the face to those people who said that you will never reach the top?

No, not at all. My viewpoint is not like that. I am thankful to the viewers who have always given me so much love. I don't get negative thoughts in my mind under any circumstances. I feel that whatever success I have got is because of this attitude of mine.

I won't say that I haven't seen success. My first film Baazigar was a platinum jubilee hit. From there on it was a beautiful journey for me. Yes, then there was also a bad phase. All in all, the success you are talking about includes all my viewers, my parents' love, and God's blessings.

But somewhere in your mind you must have felt that someday you will prove yourself?

I believe that there is a time for everything. The success I have got now, the international recognition, I had to go through that bad phase to appreciate this. If I hadn't been through that phase, I would not have known the value of this success.

In those challenging days, what did you think?

I didn't think anything special. I used to leave the house everyday thinking that I have to work harder. The criticism I got for my make-up, dress sense or my work, I took that positively. I worked very hard and I am happy that critics write that I have worked very hard. I also feel that my hard work has paid off.

We will speak to you about Big Brother, Big Boss and your films. But before that, please tell some of your favourite songs.

I like all the songs from the film 'Metro'. I also like 'Chura ke dil mera', 'Beedi jalai le', and 'Pappu can't dance' very much.

Why do I get the feeling that you also sing very well?

No, absolutely not. It's a misconception that I sing well. I sing very off-tune.

So much was written and talked about Big Brother. How was that experience?

I don't know if you are familiar with the show's format. The rule is that you get cut off from the rest of the world. There is nothing to read or write, no clock, and no connection to the outside world. It's a test of your courage. The one who passes this test is the winner.

You must have prepared yourself mentally for this show?

To tell you the truth, I didn't think it would be so difficult. I didn't go there expecting cultural clashes. I went from India and spoke in an Indian accent which they found difficult to understand. My viewpoint was very different. I hadn't watched any of the international Big Brother shows and so I didn't know how difficult it would be for me. Yes, I had become a fan of the Mumbai based Big Boss serial. I was enjoying it a lot. The tasks being given to the people in the show here were also not very difficult. But when I got there, the situation was very different. I felt that I had come into a very different world. Everyone looked at me with mistrust.

After the way Jade Goody and her mother behaved with you, you forgave them Do you think this was an influence of your Indian culture?

I think that is true. Indians forgive others very easily. The whole credit for this goes to our culture.

But when you look back, do you think that was racial discrimination?

I think that whatever happened, happened because of jealousy and not because of racial reasons. Because of jealousy, they started holding negative opinions about me. There was definitely some discrimination.

I've said this before also. You could have called it racial discrimination if they had considered themselves superior. Here it was the opposite. They thought they were inferior to me and so it could not be racial discrimination.

Ok, let's go back to the beginning of your career. Baazigar was a great hit. Though a lot of the attention was focused on Shahrukh and Kajol, your performance was also fantastic. How was the experience?

To be honest, I had never dreamed that I would become an actress and that if I become an actress that I will last for so long. I wouldn't want to take the credit for this film. Whatever I did in this film, the entire credit goes to Abbas-Mastaan.

You said you didn't think that you would become an actress. What had you planned for yourself?

Actually, I wanted to do modelling but no one gave me a chance. I had got my portfolio made and also sent it to several agencies. I had gone to an audition when a film producer saw me and offered me a role. Well, that film was never made but it was from that film that Venus gave me a role in Baazigar and the rest is history.

When you went to London for Big Brother, what was there that isn't here in Mumbai?

No there is no such thing. Mumbai is home to me. My heart is here. I don't deny that London is my second home. For now, I am concentrating on my work here in India. I have also started my own production company and I am working.

How true is it that your friendships, affection, love – everything is planned keeping London in mind?

Well, friendship and love is ok but media people have started talking about marriage and kids. They have even said that I have booked the hospital where I will give birth to kids. I would like to say that when the right time comes, I will get married. There is nothing planned right now.

You have started your production company. You are also the host on Big Boss. How busy are you with your work?

I believe that the money that we artists get, people find it very glamorous. But that's not the truth. The amount of money we are paid, we are made to work doubly hard. Travelling takes a lot of time. When fans meet us, they don't know how tired we are. We get to catch up on sleep on air-planes.

Would you like to trade places with anyone?

Absolutely not. I thoroughly enjoy my work. If I didn't enjoy it, I wouldn't be doing it. It is our duty to deliver what our fans want with complete honesty.

Why did you think of hosting Big Boss?

I was familiar with the format. I knew how important the role of the host is. I didn't have to work too hard to prepare for it. So I agreed to do this show. In this 13-week long show, I have to only work for 13 days, so I don't have to spend a lot of time either.

What is it that you don't want to do in life?

I don't want to do anything that will affect my reputation. I don't want to do something that I won't be proud of or something that will hurt my parents.

And what is it you want to do?

I want to do something that no other actress has done; something that will be memorable. When people remember me, it should bring a smile to their faces. It doesn't necessarily have to be a film.

Your favourite role so far?

Some of the reactions I got from fans – they liked 'Dhadkan'. 'Phir Milenge', 'Dus', and 'Metro very much. I have done some good work that I am proud of.

Your favourite actress?

Among the actresses of the yesteryears, I like Nutan, and of the current actresses, Konkona Sen is fantastic.

Who do you find to be the most attractive actor?

Ranbir Kapoor is very attractive, though I haven't worked with him. He is a good dancer. Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan and Aamir Khan are fantastic.

You are involved in a lot of controversies, like Richard Gere, Jade Goody. Ho do you deal with theses?

I believe that controversies surround celebrities. I would again say that I have a positive attitude whether people write about me or not. If nothing is written about me, I would feel that I am not doing anything in life.

I saw the footage of you and Richard Gere. I thought that even you were stunned by Richard's behaviour. Was that true?

I was stunned and when I saw the media reports, I was more stunned. But to be honest, had Salman, Shahrukh or any other actor of our country done what Richard did, it would not have caused such a furore. Since I had just returned from Big Brother, and it was Richard Gere, there was so much controversy. If he had done it with any wrong intentions and if he were a bad person, I would definitely have opposed it. But he had come to India for a good cause and it is our duty to praise that work and to focus on it.

Is your involvement in social work a natural part of you or is that also related to image-building?

It doesn't matter to me what people think of me. When I wake up and look at myself in the mirror, I should feel good. Everything I do, I do from the heart, and with all my heart. I don't explain myself to anyone except my family and my parents.

Your favourite holiday destination?

Paris, because no one recognizes me there.

Your favourite food?

Chinese.

The best day of your life?

In the last two years, every day of my life has been good. I hope that every day is like this.

Any moment that you would rather erase from your life?

No. There is no such incident. And even if something like that has happened, I have learnt something from it.

How would you describe yourself?

I think I am a straight-forward, happy person with a positive attitude.

In the coming years, what should fans expect from you?

I will say that I will try my best to fulfill my fans' expectations and will do my work sincerely.

The interview (BBC Ek Mulaqat) will be aired on Radio One this Sunday (24 August 2008).
