Paul Wesley Talks Vampire Mania

Posted Thursday December 30, 2010 9:57 AM GMT

He stars in "Vampire Diaries," one of the hottest shows on television, and Paul Wesley is geeked that the public is so into vampires.

The CW stud explained that the whole cultural phenomenon is caused by the melding of fantasy with reality.

"What's great about a vampire is you can incorporate it into real world circumstances, rather than 'Lord of the Rings,' where you're in 'Lord of the Rings' world. This is this mysterious, dark, dangerous, omniscient being in the world. The character is very much like the rebellious, sexual, iconic figure that throughout the years we've always felt this need to get to know. Like the Marlon Brandos."

Paul also mentioned that he was a bit apprehensive at the outset of the show. "There was some trepidation of, 'Hmm, this could kind of go in a really cheesy direction and it could be riding the coattails of something.' And then as the show developed it really became an independent piece. And what's great is I think it was able to use the success of its predecessors to get the initial viewership and then had the quality to have longevity."

Major "Vampire Diaries" Villain Will Be Cast, Says Paul Wesley

Paul Wesley might just bare his fangs if you ask him for spoilers about "The Vampire Diaries."

"I will get decapitated and bludgeoned if I speak about anything," Wesley, who plays the 162-year-old nosferatu Stefan Salvatore on the CW's bloodsucking success, tells PopcornBiz before clarifying: "I will not get decapitated on the show, although that's perfectly plausible considering our show. I've been tortured before. "

But job security aside, a vampire can't resist a little teasing nibble: "There's a big werewolf aspect coming to the show, which I think is going to be a really big deal. They're bringing in supporting characters. There are a lot of sort of supporting cast coming in and guest stars that are going to be pretty pivotal. "

Among the new faces will be an actor cast as Klaus, the as-yet-unseen mysterious, malevolent manipulator who emerged as the central villain of author L.J. Smith's novel series that inspired the show. "We don't know who's going to be playing Klaus, but that's going to be a huge thing," says Wesley. "He's going to be the big, evil bad guy ,and we're all really, really interested to see who they're going to cast because we think it's going to be a pretty big deal."

'Vampire Diaries' scoop: A couple hundred actors have read for Klaus

vampire-diaries-castingImage Credit: Quantrell Colbert/The CWFans of The Vampire Diaries are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Klaus — the oldest, most vindictive, and so far unseen vampire who'll want to sacrifice Elena to break the curse that keeps most vampires from walking in the sun (and thereby seal the fates of werewolves to forever change on the full moon whether they want to or not). It's a killer part that the exec producers aren't taking the casting of lightly, even if Kevin Williamson did joke with EW earlier this month about wanting to just dye Ian Somerhalder's hair blond. EP Julie Plec estimates a couple hundred actors have now read for the role. "We've been getting great tapes out of England and Australia. That's what excites me: This idea that there might be somebody out there that no one's really familiar with yet that can be a new fresh face that we can exploit…in all the good ways," Plec says. "I think our show works so well because we don't really stunt cast. That being said, if there's some big hot TV star that's available that we love, then… As I always joke, I have my Joshua Jackson fantasy — Pacey in Mystic Falls."

Fans have been more than happy to offer their picks online. "We like the people on Twitter who are like 'Alexander Skarsgard has to be Klaus!' I'm like really? 'Cause that's original," Plec says, laughing. They're willing to think outside the box. "The big important elements of this character are charisma and gravitas. You've got to be able to be afraid of this guy, whether you're afraid of him because he looks scary or because he's so charming that the fact that he can snap your neck with his pinky would take you by surprise. So whether he's an Old Word-flavored guy or new hip, contemporary, speedy kinda guy, that remains to be seen. We'll see what actor we connect to the most." The character will make his appearance by season's end, Plec says.

The suggestions line is open: Who would you cast? Having seen Gale Harold's name pitched elsewhere, we voiced our approval to Plec, and she said he's a little older than what they're envisioning. So you have that to go on. The idea of casting a relative unknown is intriguing: Daniel Gillies (pictured, with Nina Dobrev), who recurs as Elijah, another of the ancient vampires known as The Originals, is doing a great job keeping viewers guessing. If age and star status weren't an issue, we'd love to see what Idris Elba could do with the character. He's mentioned that he'd be into reviving Wesley Snipes' Blade, he's still open to TV (The Office, The Big C, Luther), and most importantly, he genuinely seems to enjoy shaking things up. "I get criticized for taking roles in films like Ghost Rider 2, but if you look at my rsum, dude, I've mixed it up as much as I can," he told us recently. "I love to play different roles. That's just the kind of actor I am."

'Vampire Diaries' billboards urge fans to 'Catch VD' -- EXCLUSIVE

Categories: Television, TV Biz

If you've driven along Sunset Blvd. the past few days, you may have seen this:

Or if you've been walking in Times Square (burr), you may have seen this:

The billboards are actually covert ads for the midseason return of The CW's Vampire Diaries, whose slogan is going to urge fans in the coming days to "Catch VD." Yup, in between ads for The Disney Store and Mamma Mia, the network is recommending people to run out and get a venereal disease.*

Turns out the ads are just Phase One in a campaign to promote the show's return on Jan. 27. Soon the text-only ads will be replaced by billboards showing this:

Annnnd that image doesn't really make it better, does it?

This isn't the first time The CW's marketing department has pushed the envelope — remember the Parents Television Council jumping all over the network's "OMFG" ads for Gossip Girl?

Or its "Menage a Tues" ads for Melrose Place?

Asked for comment, The CW's spokesperson released this statement: "VD simply stands for Vampire Diaries, and anyone who thinks otherwise should probably get themselves checked out."

* Though, wondering, do viewers in CW's youthful demo really call catching something "VD"? I mean, if The CW show was titled, um, Sexy Transylvania Diaries, that might work even better.

Beautiful Creature: Nina Dobrev

Look out, Hollywood: The Vampire Diaries' Nina Dobrev is staking her claim on heroine chic.

by Alyssa Giacobbe

More on Nina

Let's just get this comparison out of the way: Nina Dobrev is the anti-Bella. Coming to greet me on the Atlanta set of The Vampire Diaries'the CW's take on pop culture's trendiest figures of folklore'she's unguarded and unself-conscious, all smiles and hugs. Her trailer vibes of a teenager's bedroom: Fashion magazines, stuffed animals, and shoeboxes fill floor space and various corners. There's a half-drunk bottle of kombucha on the desk, a corkboard of photos of cast-mates and friends, and notes to herself scrawled on a chalkboard-painted wall ("pay bills," reads one).

Then, suddenly: "Oh my god, I'm so embarrassed." Our eyes land on a cheesy male pinup calendar hanging near the door. She runs to it immediately, nervously tearing it from the wall. "For my twenty-first birthday! It was a joke gift! Please don't judge!"

As in her day job playing dueling roles as responsible high-schooler Elena and centuries-old vampire Katherine, Nina, 22, hovers somewhere between distracted teenager and fully realized adult. First purchases for her new condo, for example, included a fondue set and a popcorn maker, while her mattress is still on the floor. In very vampiric fashion, she doesn't get much sleep. "By the time I get home, memorize the next day's work, brush my teeth, remove all the makeup, and shower to get the blood off . . ." she says, counting on her fingers. "And then I have to be back at work in seven hours. I can only do so much."

Just when you thought the genre had reached saturation point, The Vampire Diaries came along and quickly settled in as one of the CW's best-rated dramas. There's the supernaturally photogenic cast, sure, which includes Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder as bloodsucking brothers Stefan and Damon, respectively. But viewers also relate to TVD's subtle commentary on the idea that life is more complicated than just good versus evil. Nearly every character'from the overextended cheerleader who turns vampire to the angry jock whose inner werewolf awakens his sensitive side'is both flawed and redeemable. As the good girl pursued by both protective, loving Stefan and spontaneous, passionate Damon, Elena tries to do the right thing. But even she has a dark side in the form of Katherine, her stiletto-wearing vampire twin hell-bent on manipulating Elena and everyone she loves to get what she wants.

"When I signed on to the show, I didn't know whether I'd be playing both girls," says Nina, who tends to identify with Elena but has more fun with Katherine. "And while it's been cool, it's also exhausting because it's double the work. You invest so much of your heart and soul and energy into making even one character. It's like doing two movies at once."

Not that she's complaining. Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, but raised in Toronto, Nina landed her big break just out of high school in 2006 as teen mom Mia in Degrassi: The Next Generation and describes herself as your typical overachiever. "I wanted to be the jock, and I wanted to be a dancer and actress," she says of her time at a competitive performing-arts high school in Toronto. "I was also a gymnast and very academically driven. I always had a lot on my plate and was really overwhelmed. Not much has changed'I'm constantly trying to one-up myself and raising the stakes." She stops and smiles, adding, "Ha! No pun intended."

The CW is nothing if not aesthetically predictable in its casting, and Elena and Katherine share a thoroughly conventional beauty that's no less striking in person, which Nina maintains with smart'though not obsessive'eating. On set, dressed in a pale yellow-and-blue plaid shirt, skinny black jeans, Frye boots, and a silver beaded bracelet that was a gift from a fan, Nina polishes off a giant takeout box of fish fajitas, corn salad, and fruit. "I try to eat healthy," she says. "I like to drink my kombucha, I like smoothies, and I genuinely love oatmeal because it reminds me of childhood. But having chocolate or cake makes me happy too." Her single beauty obsession: washing her face before bed. She also practices hot yoga three or four times a week. "It's that hour and a half in my day that I get to not have voices telling me to go somewhere, do something, run lines, get curtains," she says. (Apparently, in addition to sleeping on the floor for the first week of home ownership, she went without drapes. "I was doing sit-ups, and I remember looking over, and there's somebody on the balcony across the way smoking a cigarette and watching me," she says. "I was like, I need some curtains.")

Though she remains far less cynical than her Twilight counterpart and rarely has to contend with paparazzi at home in Atlanta, she's increasingly wary of media attention, having gotten tastes of it during trips to New York City and Los Angeles. "Going to the gym, to the airport, to meetings and auditions, getting lunch'they somehow find you," she says. "I just feel like a normal girl, and the whole concept is very odd to me. But other people, like Ian, have had that experience before, so they're like, 'Yeah, this is what happens; there's nothing you can do about it.'" Speaking of Ian: Excited fans speculate endlessly about the offscreen relationship between him and Nina'proof of which has included everything from flirty tweets to videos of the pair sharing a kiss at the airport. She toes the line, neither confirming nor denying. "We expected the rumors," she says. "Like, if I wasn't dating Ian, I'd be dating Paul. A lot of people who work together end up dating, so it wouldn't be unusual, but I've never dated anyone I've worked with."

After TVD goes on hiatus this spring'"Klaus is coming," the only hint she'll give'Nina will star opposite Kellan Lutz in The Killing Game, an action indie. She hopes to fill the break between filming seasons two and three with a movie, but wants to choose wisely. "A lot of things that I'm being offered right now are horror, sci-fi, or high school'related," she says. "That's what I do every day. I want to do something different." And despite the demands of her busy TVD schedule and the industry's stiff competition, just like in high school, she's not worried about failing. "Everything I stressed out over or was upset about or cried over then was a learning experience," she says. As always, Nina's up for the challenge.

New Interview! Kevin Williamson on Damon's Shower Scenes and Elena's Romantic Future

3 months ago by Jim Colucci

Photo Credit: The CW The CW Network
Photo: That face. That rose. How can you resist? Yeah, you, Elena...

TVD executive producer Kevin Williamson clearly knows what the fans want. We chatted with Kevin at the Television Critics Association Tour and he let all the spoilery goodness fly! First thing's first, Damon is getting a bedroom... and a bathroom. That's right, the producer tells us that he's been busy thinking up "all sorts of reasons for him to shower and just ponder his life. " We like!

However, in more ominous TVD news, Kevin says that the show will be taking another tragic turn and "not everyone will be standing." What the what? Read on for the scoop! (And remember to read Part Two of our interview here.)

Are there any characters that have been particularly surprising for you in how much you started to enjoy writing for them?
All of them have surprised me in various ways. But I knew that this year was going to be about Caroline and Tyler ' that we were going to have the werewolf storyline. We set it up last year. We said we're going to do it, so we had to deliver on it. I knew Caroline was going to be a game-changer for me. I wanted the audience to root for her and love her. I wanted her to be the little vampire who could. and I thought she delivered, in spades. And she keeps astounding me. She keeps surprising me. I was hoping she had it in her, and boy, did she ever.

What's in the future for Caroline and Tyler's relationship? Will werewolf/vampire tensions drive them apart?
Yes, 100 percent. In the very next episode, things begin to unfold that don't bode well for their budding relationship. Tyler starts asking questions and we'll see that blow open. And don't forget, there's Matt waiting over there in the middle. So there's a little triangle going between a human, a vampire, and a werewolf. Tyler got through his transformation, she was there for him. They sort of have this kinship now, of this curse. And now we take it to the next level and play it out. It's very tragic.

Is it a doomed relationship from the start?
Oh my god. I wish I could squeal and tell you everything that will happen. But over the next three episodes, Julie and I were watching and ' it gets tragic.

Will it continue into Season 3?
Well we end a chapter in the next three episodes with regard to a lot of things we set in motion. And then we begin the next chapter, which is leading us to the finale.

Could you kill off any major characters and still have a show left? Maybe not Stefan or Damon, but you could lose Elena or Katherine'
I don't know if anyone is ever going to buy that we're going to kill Elena. She is the heart and soul of the show. And I don't think I would spoil the show by killing Katherine. I think there's too much juice there. I think that would be almost incredibly stupid on my part. We can do so much with these characters. Elena still has choices to make. There are things to do to these characters that you can still surprise the audience with.

Do you like what Caroline's character has done to the tone of the show?
I love what Candice has done with the tone of the show. But it's gonna get tragic. At the end of the season, not everyone will be standing.

You had to write out Caroline's mother due to a leg injury. Did that interfere with the plot at all?
No, we figured it out. We just wrote her out of, I think, two episodes. We got around it. It was pretty easy.

Will Elena stay single for the rest of the season? What will happen to her romantically?
Is she single right now? Elena is always, no matter how single she is, she's still standing there with Stefan. They're a couple who have conflicts and they have a big one looming. They're starting to truly disagree about how to handle things. But no, I wouldn't stay she's going to stay single by any means. I wouldn't say she's single now. She may be arguing or disagreeing with Stefan at the moment, but I don't think they're too far apart.

We've seen Katherine pass for Elena. Will we see Elena try to pass for Katherine?
There are some musical chairs that can go on in some fun ways, and also in some serious ways. We're going to play some more of that. You're probably going to see some more of that.

With whom is Damon naked in the bathtub in the previews we've seen?
I'm not going to tell you who's joining him. That scene has not aired yet. It is Episode 13, I think. The thing is, we've built his bedroom now and we have his bathroom. It sort of makes its debut in Episode 12 ' the next episode. So now we have a gorgeous rain shower and an amazing bathtub. And so, we'll just think of all sorts of reasons for him to shower and just ponder his life.

In most vampire lore, you don't see them bathe.
We just thought, he could have his existential crises in a shower and ponder all of eternity while having water cascading down his body. [Editor's note: Hawt!]

Has any plot development surprised you with the way it worked out on screen?
Katherine. I never expected to see as much of Katherine as we did, because I thought it would be so difficult to film, with the same actress. And scheduling it takes time and money. But she was so delicious and such a great engine for storytelling that I couldn't stay away. Her performance is what made me say, we're going there.

Kevin Williamson Talks Gay Vampires and Casting for Klaus

3 months ago by Jim Colucci

Can't wait for The Vampire Diaries to return on January 27, 2011? We're not quite sure what kind of trouble Ian Somerhalder, Michael Trevino, and Paul Wesley are getting up to in the woods, but they look mighty fine doing it.

Last time we talked to TVD executive producer Kevin Williamson he gave us the scoop on Damon Salvatore's shower scene. This time around, he's spilling the deets on casting for vindictive vampire Klaus (James Van Der Beek, anyone?) and getting serious about casting gay characters on the show.

Take a look at Part One of our interview with Kevin Williamson here.

Can you say anything more about when we're going to see Klaus? What episode? Is he cast?
We're not exactly sure what episode he'll show up in. But I would venture to say ' we have not cast him yet ' and we're heavily casting right now.

Are there candidates or a type you can reveal? A height? A race? An age?
I've got to be honest ' there are about 100 auditions I need to go home and read through. There aren't any types ' I want that really great actor to surface, and then go, "Wow, I can write for him. He'll work really well."

Are you casting a name we already know or someone new?
We're looking at both ' people who might be familiar to an audience. But most importantly, we want the right actor. So I'm guessing it'll probably be someone we don't know.

Age-wise, would he be an age-appropriate mate for the characters you have?
Yes. Keep in mind, Klaus is someone who in his history seduced Katherine in Bulgaria. So he would have been someone suitable for her. Not an old man. And by old on the CW, I mean 31. Hey, I'm 45.

Since you're talking about casting, how do you feel about the article in Newsweek that said Hollywood is not casting gay actors in gay roles?
I just look at the actors when they come in to audition. Whether they're gay or not, I don't ask them. That's not how it works.

The article's point is that out actors who everyone knows are out are not getting cast in leading roles. Would it have concerned you to cast an out gay man as Damon or Stefan for fear the audience wouldn't accept them?
I'm at a place in my life where I'm over that. Bring me the right actor. That's for someone else to worry about. That's not my issue. My issue is telling the story, making the best show possible, and finding the best actor who will marry himself to my writing. And I could give a rat's ass if he's gay, straight or whatever.

Would network executives interfere?
I don't know. I've never come across this situation. I'd love it and I'm all for it. I'm gay as a goose, so bring it on. Bring me a gay actor who's perfect for the part, and he'll get it.

Are there any gay vampires to show up on the show?
All vampires are gay in my mind. We've got to get some in Mystic Falls. But I have to kill some people off first. We've got to make room for them. I keep envisioning a world in which I can get Caroline's dad in there. Because he's a founding family member, and we've already established him as being gay. I think it would be great to have a fierce gay man come in there and run that council. I don't think we'll get around to it this season. You want to do it right ' you can't just bring him in to bring him in.

Are we looking at a Moldavian bloodbath at the end of this season then?
No, not that bad. The gay thing about leading men and women, that's a tough and very important issue. I remember the union had a whole panel about that at one point. I've got friends who are out there, plugging away.

Jane Lynch was very honest and provocative the other night, because she said she doesn't think that middle America is ready to accept a gay actor in the leading role. She feels like [viewers] need to be able to project their romantic aspirations 100% on that person. So if they know that actor's gay, they're going to have a hard time. She also went on to say that she thought network suits would have that fear.
If you really cast the right actor for the right role, it's not a problem.

Maybe we don't have enough out actors yet who fit the leading man persona.
There is a small pool of our actors, I can only think of 3 or 4. And then if you say which one of them is a leading man, then it narrows. Because there is a difference between a character actor and a leading man. The good thing is, I also work for the CW, and they're all about diversity. They want us to cast them, cast them, cast them. That's a badge of honor for them. Every time I cast a role, it's always about where's the diversity.

Is it more acceptable for vampires to be gay? So you have carte blanche on your show?
I think vampires are gay anyway. Like I think the whole werewolf story is one big coming-out metaphor. So making him gay is almost too on the nose.

Huge Finale Spoilers! Major Changes Ahead for Season 3

5 days ago by Erica Strauss

The times they are a-changin', according to The Vampire Diaries executive producer Julie Plec. Ms. Plec dishes some juicy stuff about the end of the season to Entertainment Weekly, and let's just say big shifts are in store, people. Brace yourselves ' spoilers ahead!

Photo Credit: Annette Brown/The CW 2011 The CW Network, LLC
Photo:

Damon's untimely arrival leads to him witnessing a Stelena lip-lock.

The craziness begins with the May 5 episode, "The Sun Also Rises," when tragedy strikes Mystic Falls on the eve of the full moon and a few characters bite it (the dust, that is). "The loss of life is significant and very, very, very tragic," Julie Plec teases. "The fallout of it is really painful for a lot of characters."

While Plec says it would seem the season should end there, there's more (eee!)."There was something that we wanted to do that we felt was a really important element of our story for the whole season. We knew that's how we wanted to end our season," she says. "The sacrifice ritual gets us to that ending, but there's still more story to tell. If the sacrifice is the mythology resolution, the finale is the emotional resolution."

During the May 12 season finale, fans will finally reach that resolution ' kind of. The final episode is called "As I Lay Dying," and takes place during a Gone with the Wind movie night in town square. Naturally, things "go horribly awry." Who woulda thunk? The episode also shows Damon ' who is "desperately seeking" Elena's forgiveness for "something that he has done" ' "reliving" past mistakes he made with Katherine back in 1864. Maybe it's time to let go?

Plec wouldn't spill much more ' much of what happens in the finale relates to things we haven't seen yet ' but she did reveal this season's ending will severely impact next season. She explains: "What we're doing is telling the audience that when we hit Season 3, there's gonna be a lot of things changing for our characters and in their lives."

Call us biased, but as long as Damon sticks around the Falls, we think we can cope.

Vampire Diaries Spoilers: Does the Season Finale Synopsis Contain a Clue About Who Will Die?

2 days ago by Erica Strauss

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Jeremy and Uncle John overcome their differences to help Bonnie research.

We're getting down to the wire. There are only three Vampire Diaries episodes left this season. There are also supposedly three deaths going down. Coincidence? We think not.

Thanks to a new TVD synopsis for the season finale "As I Lay Dying," we think we may have clues as to at least two characters who'll be pushing up daisies come May. But first things first, if you don't know anything about the season finale, let us give you the 411: The episode centers around Mystic Falls' "Gone with the Wind" night in town square, which sounds all well and good, but not surprisingly, ends in chaos.

Here's why: Damon finds himself at odds with um, himself, fighting off memories of past wrongdoings against Katherine, which are getting muddled in his mind with his present day Elena drama. Damon's brother Stefan isn't in any better shape. According to the synopsis, he "pays a terrible personal price" while attempting to thwart a tragedy. Uh-oh! And then there's Sherriff Forbes, who "makes a deadly mistake" while trying to keep everyone else out of harm's way.

We hate to say it, but a "deadly" mistake sounds, well, deadly, which makes us think Caroline's mom could be a part of the dying trio. And as for numero dos? This is all speculation, but the list of actors for this episode is missing somebody else near and dear to Caroline's heart ' Zach Roerig, better known as Matt Donovan. What's the deal? Are the Originals going after all our favorite humans?

Read the official synopsis:

THE BOND BETWEEN BROTHERS ' While Mystic Falls presents a screening of "Gone with The Wind" in the town square, Damon's (Ian Somerhalder) memories of Katherine (Nina Dobrev) in 1864 mix with the reality of Elena (Nina Dobrev) in the present day. Stefan (Paul Wesley) pays a terrible personal price for his attempt to prevent a tragedy, and Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre) makes a deadly mistake while trying to keep everyone safe. More than one life hangs in the balance as the consequences of the sacrifice ritual play out to a horrifying conclusion. Steven R. McQueen, Katerina Graham, Candice Accola and Matt Davis also star. John Behring directed the episode written by Turi Meyer & Al Septien & Michael Narducci (#222).
