PART ELEVEN
The first thing he became conscious of was the pounding of the mother of all headaches.
Somebody splashed a bucket of water on his face, probably to awaken him.
He opened his eyes to the bright glare of a naked light bulb angled right into his eyes so he closed his eyes again.
He wanted to wipe the water away from his face and eyes and tried to lift his hands and arms then realised at that moment they were firmly trussed to the chair he was sitting on.
Slowly he opened his eyes again only to be met by the dishevelled, manic face of his ex-wife.
"Ah, sleeping beauty awakens at last. "
Dhruv tried to blink the water away from his eyes but couldn't get enough of it away.
He tried to look at his surroundings and recognised one of the store rooms in Pandey Nivaas.
A tablet had been set up in front of him recording everything.
There was a strong and overpowering smell that at first he couldn't put a name to and when he did, made him sit up straighter alarmed.
What he thought of as water was actually kerosene.
Shradda had drenched him in kerosene and even now was going about splashing the rest of the room with the same.
"Shradda what the hell are you doing? Are you crazy? "
Shradda cackled with laughter.
" Yeah, I have been called that before. "
She laughed again and continued splashing the walls.
" I hear voices in my head so I must be crazy. "
This last part of the sentence was said in a sing - song voice.
She put down the now empty 50 litre bottle that had contained the kerosene
"The psychiatrist said I am crazy, prescribed pills but guess what I haven't been taking them. They make me 'crazy'." She lifted her fingers to put quotation marks on the last 'crazy'.
She began to laugh hysterically.
" They stop me from hearing my good voices. Today though I am listening to my voices and they are telling me ' kill Dhruv, kill Dhruv , kill Dhruv "
Dhruv's fear increased manifold.
"Did you really think you would get away with it? Break this Shradda's heart without facing any consequences? Tsk tsk tsk tsk Mr Dhruv Pandey
"I have been watching you. You are after that Tha - Tha -Thapki again. Chasing after your own sister in law. Shame on you. What more you recruited your mother to help you in your dastardly deeds. Don't think I don't know? I know everything
"Bechara Bihaan aur Thapki. They don't know their beloved mother is out to break them apart courtesy of you.
"Let me apprise them of that little reality."
"How do you know..."
She cut him of without him completing his statement.
"You mean how do I know about you and your mother? You did check for prying ears didn't you? Well you didn't check hard enough. I had already set up my hidden recording equipment by then. So I recorded everything about your little meeting with your mother. "
Shradda smiled and took out her mobile and scrolled through it.
" Here it is. Let me send it to Thapki. "
Dhruv watched helplessly as the message was sent.
The smile vanished from her lips.
"I truly loved you, but you couldn't even give me the time of day. I have got your full attention now haven't I."
Shradda walked over to one corner of the room and opened a tool box there taking out a hand held sledgehammer.
" I am gonna make you suffer a lot of pain before I actually kill you. As much pain as you made me suffer in the duration of our marriage.
Dhruv began to plead," Please Shradda, I will do anything. We can get married again and start afresh"
Her response was to take the hammer and smash it fully on the splayed fingers of his hand.
The pain was excruciating.
Dhruv screamed long and hard.
"That's for making such a stupid suggestion"
She brought down the hammer again.
"That's for marrying me in the first place knowing you were in love with someone else. "
She smashed the hammer on his other hand
"That's on behalf of Thapki, for trying to entice your devrani. Chi. You are a morally reprehensible person. Besharam. "
She brought down the hammer again and again each time citing a reason for the blow.
Finally, when his hands were a bloody mess of broken bones and raw flesh and he was about to pass out from the pain she grabbed his hair and lifted his head.
"Don't pass out now Dhruv Pandey. There's more to come. You have to meet death with open eyes. "
