. : Chapter 2 - Aaj Kal Zindagi : .
Bombay University of Arts & Science, Mumbai
The sun shone above the large, timeless stone building, while a horde of students entered the campus. It was 07:45 in the morning, and the classes were yet to start.
"Keerat, jaldi chalo! Mujhe Auditorium jaana hai. Aaj practise hai." Sahiba huffed as she ran past the gates and into the campus, pulling a sleepy-eyed Keerat along with her.
"Arre Sahiba Di! Aap shanth ho jao. Usually aap hi pehle pohonch jaate ho, aur baaki sab late aate hai." said Keerat, pulling Sahiba to a halt.
Sahiba looked at Keerat's sleepy face and smiled lovingly. She knew that Keerat had been staying back to train late in the night as she does not get time in the morning, owing to her classes.
"Keerat, mujhe pata hai tu der raat jaag kar training kar rahi hai. And I don't want you to do that. Main chahti hoon ki tu raat ko jaldi so jaa, aur subah jaldi utke training karo. Agar theek se soyegi nahi, toh energy kahan rahega?" asked Sahiba, ruffling Keerat's hair before she ran off to the auditorium.
"Yeh Sahiba Di bhi na... khud raat bhar jaagti hai, aur mujhe bolti hai." said Keerat, muttering to herself as she walked towards the gymnasium. She threw a worried glance towards the auditorium, hoping that Sahiba Di would on time at least today, considering that she would be spending the entire day practising for the college fest.
Trrriiiiiinnnnngggg... Keerat's phone rang loudly, making her jump. "Yeh subah subah kaun call kar raha hai?", she thought, pulling the phone out of her pocket. The caller ID read 'Fattu', bringing an instant smile on Keerat's face. "Yeh Veer bhi na..." she thought to herself as she picked the call.
"Hello... kya main Keerat Pehelwaan se baat kar Raha hoon?" asked Veer, the happiness and excitement evident in his voice.
"Oye fattu, kaafi jaldi uth gaya tu." said Keerat, trying not to her own excitement show.
"Woh kya hai na Keerat ji, aapki bohot yaad aa rahi thi. Aajkal mujhe dhamki dene wale log Kam ho gaye." said Veer, making Keerat laugh.
"Toh tu Bombay aaja. Dhamki kya, saath mein ek punch bhi free mein dungi." said Keerat, laughing at Veer's antics.
"Aapke haathon se thappad, punch, pinch, sab lene ke liye tayyar hoon." said Veer, with a dreamy look on his face.
"Sacchi? Toh kab expect karoon main tumhe?" asked Keerat.
"Toh iska matlab, aap bhi mujhe uthna hi miss kar rahe hain, jitna main aapko kar raha hoon?" asked Veer, making Keerat blush furiously.
"What? No! Aisa kuch bhi nahi hai. Veer, tum na... Tum bohot..." stuttered Keerat, suddenly losing the ability to speak coherently.
"Bohot sweet hoon..." Veer completed the sentence for her, delighted at the way she suddenly got flustered.
"Accha, suno na, Heartist Ji kaise hai?" asked Veer, his voice suddenly turning serious.
"Woh toh bilkul theek hai Veer. Sach bolun? Bohot din baad main Sahiba Di ko itna khush aur care-free dekh rahi hoon. And she deserves it." said Keerat, making Veer smile.
"I know... Especially after every she went to at my house, she deserves to be free and happy. And so do you Keerat. Khush rahiyo, lekin hume mat bhulna." said Veer cheekily, before cutting the call.
"Idiot... Koi iss duffer ko kaise bhul sakta hai." thought Keerat to herself as she looked at her phone and smiled.
This was one of the reasons Keerat respected Veer. Despite the immense love he had for his family, he never made excuses for their behaviour. He had the guts to call them out for their mistakes and take responsibility for it, even if it meant going against his older brother and Daarji.
In fact, after Sahiba and Keerat left Ludhiana and moved to Mumbai, he was the only one who bothered enquiring after them, staying consistently in touch, and even visited the Mongas often... something that even Seerat didn't bother doing.
In the past one year, a steady friendship had grown between Keerat and Veer, so much so that even the physical distance between them didn't matter. They always made time for each other and kept each other updated on everything that was happening in their lives.
Even Sahiba had stayed in touch with Veer, given that she loved him as her own brother, and often sent him pictures of her artwork to which he would respond with a new song that he has written and composed. Sometimes, Veer and Sahiba together would start making fun of Keerat, laughing at her quick temper and rugged personality. And though Keerat would never admit it aloud, these were some of her most favourite moments. Keerat couldn't remember being this happy, ever in life, as she was now. And she couldn't remember seeing Sahiba happier than she was now either. "Probably that's what comes with freeing yourself from a toxic family. A sense of relief and boundless happiness." thought Keerat.
Her mind automatically wandered to the day Sahiba took the decision to break free of her shackles.
-Flashback-
"Keerat. Mujhe tumse kuch zaroori baat karni hai. College ke bahar jo chai ka tapri hai na, wahan hoon. Jaldi aao." said Sahiba over the phone, sounding serious.
Keerat's worries knew no bounds as she rushed to the college gate. Was Sahiba in trouble again? She had proven her innocence to the Brars regarding Daarji's imprisonment and walked out of that hellhole with her head held high. Were they creating anymore problems for her?
"Di... kya hua? Sab theek hai na?" Keerat ran towards Sahiba, panting, looking for signs of distress on Sahiba's face.
"Nahi pagal. Tu bhaag kyun rahi hai? Main theek hoon. Main bhas tumse baat karna chahti thi, regarding our future. Tu aaram se baith. Main batati hoon." said Sahiba, pulling Keerat beside her on the bench while ordering two cups of Kadak Chai.
"Batao Di. Kya baat hai?" asked Keerat, now curious about Sahiba's decision for their future.
"Keerat. Ab tumhe pata hai ki mera aur Angad ka divorce ho chuka hai. Aur ab mera Brars ke saath koi rishta nahi raha. I mean, unhone maafi maang liya hai mujhse. Lekin, main wapas nahi jaana chahti hoon. Mujhe Brar khandaan ke Bahu banke zindagi nahi gurzaarna. Issi liye maine ek faisla liya hai." said Sahiba.
"Woh faisla kya hai Di? Aap mujhe batao. Aap jo bhi faisla lenge, main aapke saath hoon." said Keerat fiercely, making Sahiba smile.
"Maine faisla liya hai ki main dukhaan bhejdungi." said Sahiba, making Keerat gasp.
"Yeh aap kya bol rahe hai Di? Woh dukhaan aapka sapna hai!" said Keerat, indignantly.
"Nahi Keerat. Woh dukhaan mera sapna nahi hai. I didn't have any other means of pursuing my dreams, so I used the shop as a means to create and showcase my talent. Ab woh dukhaan bhi mere liye chota hai Keerat. Mujhe kuch bada karna hai. Aur uske liye dukhaan bhejna, it's the right thing to do." said Sahiba, her expression determined.
"Theek hai Di. Lekin dukhaan bhejke aap karenge kya?" asked Keerat, unsure of what Sahiba was planning.
"Main sirf dukhaan nahi, dukhaan ke saath saath mera saara artwork bhi bhej rahi hoon. Usse jo bhi Paisa aayega, uske saath main apna padhai poora karungi." said Sahiba, putting a smile on Keerat's face.
"Di, main bohot khush hoon ki aap zindagi mein pehli baar apne baare mein soch rahe hai. Lekin aap Mummy aur Papa ji ko kaise manayenge?" asked Keerat, worried about how their parents would react.
"Woh maane ya na maane Keerat, main college jaaungi, aur apna sapna poora karungi. Aaj tak, main Mummy, Papa ji, aur hamare ghar ke liye hi sab kuch karte aayi hoon. Lekin unhone mere baare mein kabhi nahi socha. Mummy ka toh chod hi do, unhone toh hamesha Seerat Di ke baare mein hi socha hai. Aur Papa ji, mujhe laga ki woh toh Mera saath denge. Lekin paise saamne aate hi, woh dukhaan bhejne ke liye tayaar hogaye the. Seerat Di, jinhone iss ghar ke liye kuch bhi nahi kiya, unki baat sunn kar Papa ji convince hogaye. Jab woh log itne selfish ho sakte hai, toh main kyun nahi sochun apne baare mein?" Keerat pulled Sahiba into a tight embrace as she heard this.
Everything that Sahiba said was true. Their parents had done nothing for her, not even their father. They had only taken and taken from Sahiba, not even bothering that it was draining her from inside. And yet, Sahiba never complained. Keerat wondered how much Sahiba's patience had been tested for her to take such a decision.
-Flashback Ends-
And that was how Sahiba and Keerat found themselves in Bombay University of Arts & Science, Mumbai, through a fully-funded scholarship to get them through their studies, and money from the shop's sale to get them through their daily expenses.
Aaj kal zindagi
Mujhse hai keh rahi
Tu jo meri maane toh chal deewane
Sapnon ki rahoon mein tu
Saari khusbuon ko
Saari roshni ko le le in bahoon mein tu
Keerat watched as Sahiba decorated the auditorium, preparing it for the college fest. She had definitely meant what she said to Veer. She had never seen her Sahiba Di happier than this.
Ab hai tu jahaan
Din raat saare naye hai
Arzoo jawaan
Jazbaat saare naye hai
Naye raastein hai tere vaaste
Toh rahe kyun panahoon mein tu
She watched Sahiba give out instructions to the other students while she took on the major chunk of work herself, completely immersing herself in it. To Keerat, letting go of everything else and coming to this college was the best decision that Sahiba ever made.
Ohhoo
Tere liye nayi hai zameen naya aasmaan
Likh de hawaaon mein koi nayi dastaan...
Keerat was proud of her Sahiba Di, for breaking the shackles and spreading her wings, even when the situations were against her.
"I hope, at least ab meri Sahiba Di ko zindagi mein khushiyan mile. I hope ki yeh Angad Singh Brar naam ke musibat kabhi unke zindagi mein wapas na aaye." thought Keerat to herself.
But, little did she know that the chapter between Angad Singh Brar and Sahiba Kaur Monga was far from over? In fact, it is now that the actual chapter will begin...
