Jag Soona Soona Lage- Of Loneliness and Silences

So, I despise the movie Om Shanti Om however I like three songs from it's album- Ankhon Mein Teri, Main Agar Kahoon and Jag Soona Soona Lage. The last one, Jag Soona Soona Laage, was played today. As per always, it was tastefully select as it was appropriate for the moment.

Before I get on about the song, I want to take a second to focus on the aesthetics of the scene.

Clothing: Twinkle was shown wearing a deep blue dress, Kunj's black button up standing in the middle of a road. The color blue is often connoted with stability, trust and loyalty. It is known as a "calm" color. However, it also conveys sadness and gloominess. I found it rather fitting that Twinkle was wearing this color while a turbulent sea of emotions was brewing inside her. It reminds me of how she has repeatedly tried to remain calm through this ordeal, has tried to be straight-laced while Kunj bursts at her yet her heart is breaking.

Cinematography: I currently take a cinematography/photography class in school. One of the techniques we have learned for good compositions is framing. Framing is when you place objects around the edge of the composition to you help to isolate the main subject from the outside world. The result is a more focused image which draws your eye naturally to the main point of interest. I think this further reinforced that Twinkle's isolation which complemented the music being played.

Now, let's move on to the music.

The music began after Twinkle spent a moment repeating what Kunj said and negating it. She realizes that Kunj is very important to her and she cannot lose him. This song speaks of a "soona" or lonely world when a relationship breaks before truly beginning. This fits perfectly because while Twinkle and Kunj have feelings for each other, these feelings have not materialized into a full blown relationship that acknowledges these feelings. People often say silence speaks louder than words; Kunj's silence forced Twinkle to reflect on how she cannot live without him, how her world is lonely.

Main Taan Jiyan Na Maraan
I feel neither alive nor dead

Haay Ve Dass Main Ki Karan
Please tell me what should I do

Dil Jude Bina Hi Tut Gaye
The bonds between the hearts broke before they could join

Hath Mile Bina Hi Chhut Gaye
The hands got separated even before they met

Ki Likhe Nae Lekh Kismat Ne
What has been written in the destiny

Purgatory is what Catholics label as the intermittent between Heaven and Hell, life or death. Purgatory is full of suffering and painful. Of course, this is not a Catholicism based show but the first lines evoke a sense of hopelessness fueled by the second line. If one does not feel alive or dead, where are they, what are they? I imagine that stage must terrible- to know you won't live but to await death...I think the second line helps convey the desperation Twinkle later shows when she attempts to get Kunj to interact with her. I believe part of the challenge is the fact that they have yet to acknowledge their love hence they are unsure how to go about things. In marriages, the partners know each other well to the point where they know what to do should trouble arise. Twinkle and Kunj are married yet need to hone that aspect of their marriage. The third and fourth line are resonant of the songs that have played recently in this show that centralize on the "almost" factor of their relationship. For example, Do Pal speaks of how things were good for a moment and changed soon after. This song continues that element by shedding light to how close Twinkle and Kunj could have gotten had this Mrs. Amritsar issue not occurred. The line about the hands remains me of the tap scene in the bathroom when Kunj and Twinkle ended up putting their hands on top of each other. It almost became a full circle because a non-verbal reconciliation seemed to have happened. While Kunj did not speak, he showed Twinkle he still cared deeply for her (preventing the slipping, offering the towel, etc.)

Baar Baar Ron Ankhiyan Tainu Jo Na Vekh Sakiyan
My eyes cry continuously without a glimpse of You, My Soulmate

Khoh Leya Hai Yaar Kudarat Ne
It seems that nature has stolen You from Me

Kattan Main Kiven Din Teri Saun Tere Bin
How do I pass the days and nights without You, My Soulmate

Main Taan Jiyan Na Maraan
I feel neither alive nor dead

Twinkle was obviously crying at Kunj's words. The fact that he left her, that she could not see him hurt her very much. Kunj is like a rock, a grounding force in her life. If he isn't there, Twinkle's world goes awry. Kunj's reaction is justified- he does not like the way this contest is causing trouble to Twinkle. Any husband or wife would be deeply distressed as having to fend off eve teasers and molester thrice for their signifiant other AND knowing their partner is keeping things from them. His reaction is, hence, natural which ties into how "nature" has stolen him away from Twinkle.

Roothi Roothi Saari Raatein
All the nights seem upset

Pheeke Pheeke Saare Din
All the days are colourless

These two lines connect to the storminess of the night- the winds blowing, the laves shaking, etc. The second line brings to mind the color of the outfit that Twinkle wore during dinner- Twinkle went from a vibrant color to a pastel showing the transition of colorlessness.

All done! Thank you for reading and please share your thoughts! I look forward to it!
