Great job with this analysis, gurleen :) I can really connect to the points you made.
Totally nailed it with the battle of love thing. I agree completely, while the tashan of ishq exists with twinj- the concept really spreads to all the relationships in the show, not just the romantic one. The characters are all acting in different ways due to their respective affections for different family members and it's like a web that they are all in for different reasons. Love how you explained the whole post actually.
Also I get what you mean with the tashan thing, it's a punjabi word and truely prevalent amongst punjabis. Along with what you said about tashan being competitive, and. Punjabis being proud/confident about something in them- I feel (on a personal level being half punjabi and from the punjabis I know) this connects to the exuberance of the culture, and being expressive about the pride. Dunno if others feel the same, but from my experience, in punjabi culture being strong is valued and kind of expected. I don't know if it could be called showing off- but also it's a common punjabi trait to spend kinda openly and be more on the lavish side (however much that is possible for the person), being brave/not afraid to fight when needed, and being open not shy. And maybe not directly so but from learned behavior, us punjabis are expressive and very proud of our culture and almost always express this pride. Perhaps that saying-"punjabian di shaan vakhri" derived from this concept.
Thanks! 😃
Sikhism as a culture has been raised to be really proud of themselves. I don't know how much you know about the Sikh history, but there has been a LOT of bloodshed. So many sacrifices have been made by our Gurus because of their strong beliefs and values. The torture and inhumane manner in which they have been murdered is absolutely horrifying. I feel it's because of this horrific past, we have been raised to be not depressed or feel pity for ourselves. But rather to be proud and feel honor in the sacrifices that have been made. To walk with our heads held high, feeling confident in everything that we do and not back down from a challenge.
I think the idea of spending lavishly is not to be tied down to materialistic things. Money is merely a tool in which we can buy commodities to please ourselves temporarily. The true inner peace and happiness is supposed to come from the companionship with our friends and families and most importantly from reading the Gurbani.
See, as a person, I am incredibly shy until you get to know me. I keep to myself and only talk when it is needed. But when I do talk, there is so much that I have to say. As you may noticed I have generally presented myself as this "professional" writer and an insightful analytic. But today I did break down those walls and presented the crazy, jhalli side to me. 😆 In this regard, Sikhs can be quiet, timid or shy, but they are most well known for their loud and outspoken personality. They have even often been called the "life of the party" and yes I'm being biased here, I find this to be true. 😆
We really are different. Mast mahol mein rehna, hamesha haaste gaate rehna, it's all true for us.
I'm actually reminded of this one Daler Mehndi song, maybe you've heard of it. It's going something like, "Saade nal raho ge toh aish karoge, Zindagi de saare cash karoge".
Gosh, that actually brought back so many memories. <3
