This analysis is on request of Ethereal.Surbhi who wished me to look into the meaning of "Tashan-E-Ishq" and what it means for the show.

So here is the etymology and my interpretation behind the title.

Tashan

  • The earliest reference that I can find to this term is a battle that had occurred in the Chinese Civil War after World War II had taken place. The literal translation for the word is "Pagoda Mountain" and it was short for Tashanbao which meant "Pagoda Mountain Bunker". I won't go into too much detail of the battle itself as it does not relate much to the show. However, what we can take away from this is that it is in reference to a battle.
  • The next reference that is found in the Punjabi context is that it means style, attitude, swagger etc.
-E-

  • It means "of"
Ishq

  • Don't need to go into too much detail for this as we all know that it means love.
Tashan-E-Ishq

  • Right now we have two definitions: "Battle of Love" and "The Style/Attitude of Love". Let's break this down.
    • "Battle of Love": This definition shouldn't be seen as being tied down to merely one couple or person. It can be seen in reference to multiple characters.
      • For example: Leela's love for Twinkle enables her to maintain a rivalry with Anita so that Leela can better protect Twinkle.
      • Another example: Yuvi's love for Anita is forcing him to act in evil ways to fulfill her revenge.
      • Yet another example: Twinkle's love for Leela has made her be tied down into a marriage that she does not want.
    • In all these cases and more, each individual character engages in an act that is borne out of love for another. The major takeaway is the rivalry between Leela and Anita, however the animosity isn't as intense from Leela's side as it is from Anita's.
    • Another thing to be noted is that since it is a battle, there will be many casualties. Indeed we have seen this as the Sarna's have been unwillingly dragged into this fight where they are unclear about not only the rules but also are oblivious as to why they are fighting in the first place.
    • As the heading said this analysis will be in reference to TwiNj, here are my two cents:
      • This is going to be a battle between the couple based on many misunderstandings and lack of trust. Both Twinkle and Kunj are getting involved in this relationship for their mother's sake. That is where their commonality lies - the love for their mothers. The battle they are engaged in is a fight for their honor.
        • Twinkle is fighting both for her personal honor and to save her mother's face from the press.
        • Kunj too, is fighting to prove and preserve the integrity of his character and to save his mother from becoming a widow, which in itself brings about a whole different kind of dishonor.
      • Both Usha and Leela have an extremely deep place in their children's lives. They both have been depicted as being a strong pillar of support for TwiNj and will believe them no matter how the world tries to defame them. We have seen them both fight against the world (Leela with the media and society; Usha with Manohar and Leela) to save the integrity of their children. Thus, this could be seen a battle between them as well for the love of their children.
    • "The Style/Attitude of Love": The literal translation comes off weaker than the "Battle of Love" but it is what it is.
    • As a Sikh, I can tell you for a fact that we all do something that sets us apart from each other. We all have this one thing about us that we are really proud of and have so much confidence instilled in it.
    • We also have this tendency to be really competitive. To be the number one and simply have a greater say over everyone else. Now, I am generalizing at this part, but from the majority of the Sikhs that I know, it's true.
    • What does this mean for TwiNj?
      • Twinkle: We've already seen how much attitude she throws at Kunj. I mean, this poor guy has been at the receiving end of her nakhres from the very first day. In fact in Episode #40, in his anger we have seen Kunj grab Twinkle a couple of times but she didn't take it. She stood up, defended herself and threw the same anger right back at him. This to me, proves that this is where the real tashan is. Having equal power and giving back the same type of attitude as you are receiving. When she was with Yuvi, she was submissive, pleading and constantly being abused by him. She would do anything and everything to please him and that created a huge imbalance between their relationship. However, with Kunj, she is not tolerating any of his nonsense. She feels she has been greatly wronged by him and she is giving him a fit reply. She is no longer docile or delicate. She is a strong lioness who will fight for herself.
      • Kunj: Thus far we have seen him on the moral and righteous path. Yes, Kunj has style, but it is more in the classy manner. He is calm and rational and does not allow himself to be subjected to anger that easily. However, at this point in his life he has been hurt so badly that he cannot think straight. His dad almost killed himself and emotionally blackmailed him into getting married to a woman who accused him of molesting her. He is not in a good mood. He is angry all the time and will definitely be showing attitude to Twinkle and letting her know that just because he has supported her as a friend all this time and shown the purity of his heart; that doesn't mean that he is going to allow himself to be used and have his name be maligned in such a bad manner. He is going to fight back and be resolute in his stance of making Twinkle's life difficult.
Personally, I feel like both these definitions are blurred together for the context of the show. It hasn't been categorized differently and neither is one specific interpretation being taken as one definitive truth. It is a mesh of many viewpoints and the tashan is not limited nor tied down to a relationship between two people. It is more of a web where all the characters are connected to each other in complex ways. The only thing left to be seen is who emerges as the victor in this battle.

Hopefully, this is coherent for you all. The format is weird with all the bullet points but it made sense to me when I was writing it out and I felt like it would get my points across easier.

Let me know if there's any confusions. :)

Great job with this analysis, gurleen :) I can really connect to the points you made.
Totally nailed it with the battle of love thing. I agree completely, while the tashan of ishq exists with twinj- the concept really spreads to all the relationships in the show, not just the romantic one. The characters are all acting in different ways due to their respective affections for different family members and it's like a web that they are all in for different reasons. Love how you explained the whole post actually.

Also I get what you mean with the tashan thing, it's a punjabi word and truely prevalent amongst punjabis. Along with what you said about tashan being competitive, and. Punjabis being proud/confident about something in them- I feel (on a personal level being half punjabi and from the punjabis I know) this connects to the exuberance of the culture, and being expressive about the pride. Dunno if others feel the same, but from my experience, in punjabi culture being strong is valued and kind of expected. I don't know if it could be called showing off- but also it's a common punjabi trait to spend kinda openly and be more on the lavish side (however much that is possible for the person), being brave/not afraid to fight when needed, and being open not shy. And maybe not directly so but from learned behavior, us punjabis are expressive and very proud of our culture and almost always express this pride. Perhaps that saying-"punjabian di shaan vakhri" derived from this concept.

Gurleen first thanks a lot for awesome analysis. You completely nailed. Hats off to you 🤗 Everything you wrote made sense to me. and lots of other things that i watched on fhis show now seems so relevant. Battle of love. very nice. TwiNj decleared Battle. This battle will get them their desired love. i didnt know lots of sikhs culture. being non punjabi i used to think Leela Anita competing, is that really exists. but after your post it makes sense. i saw lots of shows with punjabi/sikh background but i guess this show is getting most of its culture correct. from daily mentions of/visiting gurudwara guruji to most of its culture n sikhs life styles etc. now all thse makes sense to me not just title so thanks a lot for wonderful post again 🤗 you are a great analyst

Thanks! 😃

Sikhism as a culture has been raised to be really proud of themselves. I don't know how much you know about the Sikh history, but there has been a LOT of bloodshed. So many sacrifices have been made by our Gurus because of their strong beliefs and values. The torture and inhumane manner in which they have been murdered is absolutely horrifying. I feel it's because of this horrific past, we have been raised to be not depressed or feel pity for ourselves. But rather to be proud and feel honor in the sacrifices that have been made. To walk with our heads held high, feeling confident in everything that we do and not back down from a challenge.

I think the idea of spending lavishly is not to be tied down to materialistic things. Money is merely a tool in which we can buy commodities to please ourselves temporarily. The true inner peace and happiness is supposed to come from the companionship with our friends and families and most importantly from reading the Gurbani.

See, as a person, I am incredibly shy until you get to know me. I keep to myself and only talk when it is needed. But when I do talk, there is so much that I have to say. As you may noticed I have generally presented myself as this "professional" writer and an insightful analytic. But today I did break down those walls and presented the crazy, jhalli side to me. 😆 In this regard, Sikhs can be quiet, timid or shy, but they are most well known for their loud and outspoken personality. They have even often been called the "life of the party" and yes I'm being biased here, I find this to be true. 😆

We really are different. Mast mahol mein rehna, hamesha haaste gaate rehna, it's all true for us.

I'm actually reminded of this one Daler Mehndi song, maybe you've heard of it. It's going something like, "Saade nal raho ge toh aish karoge, Zindagi de saare cash karoge".

Gosh, that actually brought back so many memories. <3
