A long standing dispute between veteran playback singer Kumar Sanu and his former wife Rita Bhattacharya has once again come into the public eye, this time taking a legal turn. The controversy revolves around allegations made by Rita in recent media interactions, which Kumar Sanu claims have severely harmed his public image. In response, the singer has approached the Bombay High Court, seeking legal intervention to protect his reputation.
Kumar Sanu has filed a defamation suit against Rita Bhattacharya, demanding compensation for what he describes as reputational damage. He has also requested the court to order the removal of interviews in which, according to him, defamatory remarks were made. The matter came up for hearing before the Bombay High Court on December 17, where the singer challenged the validity and intent of the statements released by his former spouse.
As per reports, the petition highlights specific allegations made by Rita in these interviews. She reportedly accused Kumar Sanu of subjecting her to severe mistreatment during her pregnancy. Her claims included being deprived of food, being confined to the kitchen and not being provided with necessary medical attention at the time. These statements, Sanu contends, are not only false but also deeply damaging to his personal and professional standing.
Representing the singer, lawyer Sana Raees Khan argued that Rita’s public statements violate the terms of their divorce settlement. The petition notes that the divorce agreement, which was officially recorded at the Bandra Family Court on February 9, 2001, included a clear clause restraining both parties from making allegations or accusations against each other in the future. By speaking about their past marriage in such a manner, the petition claims, Rita has breached this legally binding understanding.
For those who do not know, Kumar Sanu and Rita Bhattacharya were married in the late 1980s and share three children, Jiko, Jassi and Jaan. While the couple eventually parted ways, their family remained in the public eye over the years. Their son Jaan later gained recognition after participating in Bigg Boss season 14, which brought renewed attention to the family.
The High Court proceedings are expected to determine whether the statements in question amount to defamation and whether the earlier divorce agreement has indeed been violated, as claimed by the singer.
