Loved the concept. Jane Austen is one of the best romance writers. I somehow feel that all the love stories somewhere fall between the love stories of Mr. Bingley and Miss Jane and Mr. Darcy and Miss Elizabeth.

Thanks for reading.

Glad to find another Austen fan. Darcy is one of the best Austen characters, in fact romance hero ever. His and Lizzie's story is truly beautiful.

Thanks for reading.

Somehow the characters of Swaragini and P&P share some traits so it was easier for me to imagine them.

Chapter 2 - The Gadodias and A Bose

"Why did I agree to this?" Swara asked in exasperation as she struggled to wrap a light blue saree around her waist.

The 'night of the party' as Parvati liked to call it, had come. It was a balmy September evening in Kolkata and the Gadodias, under the watchful eyes of Parvati were getting ready for the party. Parvati insisted on the girls wearing saree as it would make them more presentable or more 'marriage material' Swara had quipped. She was quieted by the stern glaze of her mother.

Swara had half a mind to refuse the invitation. She could spend the evening reading a book, or doing any productive work, rather than being paraded in front of people for eligible proposals. But she agreed to go for Ragini. Ragini was somewhat excited at the prospect of going to the party and meeting this Lakshya, about whom Parvati won't stop talking. The entire week Paravti was just talking about the Maheswaris.

They were a well known family in the hotel business in India and abroad. The family patriarch was DurgaPrasad Maheswari. His wife, Annapuna, was a religious woman. That's how Parvati had met her in a lavish Durga Puja organized by Annapurna. They had 2 sons- Adarsh who was married (hence wasn't important to even talk about as per Parvati) and the younger, Lakshya who lived in London, and ran the Maheshwaris' hotel business in the UK and Europe. At 28, Lakshya was already receiving garners for being a young entrepreneur. Add the good looks and he was a complete package.

After incessant mentions about Lakshya in the Gadodia household, Ragini's interest was sparked and she wanted to go which meant Swara had to as she could never say no to her sister. Ragini was shy especially in front of strangers and she needed Swara for support.

Parvati adored her grand-daughters without any bias but it was clear to everyone that Ragini was closer to her. Since birth Parvati had cared for Ragini, initially not letting Sharmistha come close to her. It was only when Shekhar insisted, Parvati slowly started to trust an infant Ragini with Sharmistha. Her worries vapourized when she saw Sharmistha's love for Ragini, yet she was still more protective of Ragini.

Ragini, who was already dressed in a red saree, chosen by Parvati, giggled as she helped Swara form the pleats of the saree. "We're going because Dadi wants us to," she replied sweetly.

"Dadi wants you to," Swara corrected her with a sly smile; "She couldn't care less if I went in tattered rags but that might make you look bad."

"You know that's not true," Ragini replied, pinning Swara's saree with the blouse. "She loves you. You just make it difficult for her-."

"Because I have a brain?" Swara offered jovially.

Ragini nudged her playfully, "there you go."

Swara looked at her reflection in the mirror. Her saree was perfectly draped around petite waist. Her hair was straight, falling a little below her shoulder. She put a light shade of pink on her lips. It was a sharp contrast to Ragini who almost looked like a bride.

In hindsight, Swara mused, that must have been Dadi's intention all along.

After an hour or two the Gadodias were all set to leave for the party. If making everyone dress up for the party was not enough, Parvati shocked everyone when she asked Ragini to carry her sitar as well.

"Sitar?" Shekhar voiced what everyone was thinking, "Why does Ragini need to take her sitar?

"Ragini can play the sitar in the party. That is how you show your skills." Parvati replied as a confused Ragini went in her room to get the instrument. "Annapurna was telling me that would have live music in the party and who better than Ragini to mesmerize them with her soulful music?"

"Mrs. Maheswari agreed to this?" Swara asked with a raised eyebrow.

"Oh no, she doesn't know," Parvati replied happily, "It will be a surprise."

Swara gave herself a mental face palm and Shekhar-Sharmistha looked at one another. At this point all of Parvati's quirks were usual to them.

"That is not happening," Shekhar objected firmly. He hardly ever used a strict tone in the house. In the rare instances that he did, no one mustered up the courage to go against him. Not even Parvati. She surrendered her absurd demand. Ragini looked relieved.

Shekhar spoke, "I'll get a cab."

"A cab? Parvati questioned, "Aren't we taking our car?

"There's 6 of us," Shekhar answered, "We won't fit in 1 car.

"6? Parvati's face slowly turned annoyed as it dawned on her. "Kavya is going with us?"

"Of course," Shekhar replied as a matter-of-factly.

Kavya Bose was Swara's first cousin, the daughter of Sharmistha's elder brother. A few years back, Kavya's parents had died in a tragic car crash leaving a 14 year old orphaned Kavya with her only living relative - Sharmistha. She had come to live with the Gadodias five years back. She was now 19, a 2nd year college going student.

Kavya gradually bonded with Swara and Ragini. She was a younger sister to them in all sense of the word. Kavya gelled with all the Gadodias expect for Parvati. The fact that Kavya's expenses were borne by Shekhar, who at that time was the only earning member supporting 6 people, was Parvati's prime reason. Kavya's parents didn't have much in money or bonds. They had left their daughter a plot of land in Kolkata.

It didn't help that Kavya was out-spoken and would frequently keep pulling Parvati's leg.

Parvati grimaced when Kavya walked out of her room wearing a black dress that fell to her knees. Kavya looked at Swara and Ragini with her eyes wide open.

Even without the power of telekinesis, Swara knew what Kavya was thinking. Why were they dressed like that? Swara rolled her eyes and pointed at Dadi. Kavya nodded and both the girls tried to stifle their laugh.

Alas after a week of preparation, the Gadodias left for the Maheswaris party.

I simply love this desi version of Pride and Prejuidice, and the subtle homour you have infused makes for a great read. Thoroughly enjoyed the update, especially the sisters' bonding. And if it does go along the original story, we would have a posisitive Ragini for Kavya would be Lydia, I guess.
Eager to read more

Best

PS - Dadi appears to be good so far😊

PPS- Could let me know your name, if you do not mind sharing it?
