Chapter 42
Now that she came to terms with Ragini being at the baadi, Swara admitted to herself that she was relieved not to have to go. She would have done anything for her mother... but it would have been a wrench to be away from Sanskaar... you're behaving like a love-lorn idiot, she scolded herself... but the hours that he was away... she had to force herself not to call him, to engage herself in some activity or the other till it was time for him to come home.
Every moment with him around was so heightened, so sharply focussed... she wondered at the feeling. Even if he was preoccupied with work and other things, just to see him in the room... concentrating on his laptop screen, or rifle through his files...
At the moment, he was on the phone in the balcony, so she put on the radio at a low volume and dived into the bathroom for a quick shower before evening aarti. When she came out, rubbing her wet hair, he was done talking, so she turned up the volume again and brought her towel up to jerk the droplets from her tresses.
Sanskaar came to the door and on cue, Rafi started to croon...
Na jhatko zulf se pani
Ye moti phoot jayenge...
Sanskaar raised a comic eyebrow at the radio and Swara started giggling at the coincidence. He stood there for a moment, looking at her... her kurta wasn't fully zipped up and was sliding almost off her shoulder, her wet hair was pulled to one side, leaving drops of water on her almost bare shoulders... He pushed away from the door and came closer... and closer... her smile was wiped off by the flare of molten heat in his eyes.
He came to stand before her, his eyes dropping to her lips, still damp from the shower. Ye nazuk lab hai ya aapas me do lipti hui kaliyan... She raised her face to his, and closed her eyes in involuntary invitation... his finger came up to caress the full lower lip, and seduce them into parting... Zara inko alag kar do, tarannum phoot jayenge...
But still, he didn't kiss her... and bemused, she opened her eyes slowly. His face was near, a knowing smile in his eyes... and, suddenly shy for having solicited his lips, she lowered her gaze again. Hamari jaan le lega ye neechi aankh ka jadoo... Sanskaar sighed... Chalo achcha hua mar kar jahaan se choot jayenge...
Her bosom heaved in sheer response to his nearness... and his phone beeped. Shaking his head, he glanced at it and reined himself in...
Work! He looked up at her. "Hold that thought!" he said, and then went away.
