Chapter 27
Sharmishta got up and sat next to Swara. "Shona, I had requested you to give this marriage your best effort for at least six months, but I had no idea that I had placed you in such a fix. If you are so troubled by this relationship, I take back my words... you don't need to continue... your Baba and I just want to see you happy! Come home with us now."
Swara's eyes flew to her mother's face. Oh God, what was Maa saying! She was supposed to back her and help her stay back! In dismay, Swara swung her head to look at Sanskaar, her eyes round and worried. Sanskaar too had jerked up his head at Sharmistha's words and he turned to look at Swara. Their eyes met... and Swara managed to convey this fresh wave of distress. Yeh kya ho raha hai, Sanskaar?
Sharmishta was looking at her daughter, puzzled and worried. From her reading of the situation, Swara had been moving slowly but surely towards a real marriage with Sanskaar... but this fact of Swara's sleeping in the guest room had bothered her. If Shona was so uncomfortable, there was no point in pushing this further.
Sanskaar heart leaped at that look Swara had given him. There was an appeal in her glance... and that meant... that meant... he had to find out what that meant! Sanskaar stood up decisively. He came over and held out a hand to Swara, who put her hand in his immediately. "Chalo mere saath..." he said.
To the elders he said, "Please give us ten minutes alone. We'll be back soon."
Durga Prasad Maheshwari nodded emphatically. The children should sort this out - they knew their lives best.

Lakshya had been standing all this while with his hands resting on the back of his mother's chair. Now he moved away, scratching his chin, deep in thought. He had caught Swara's desperate look to Sanskaar as well, and it confirmed what he thought. The ladies of the house had caught Swara on the backfoot when she was not expecting it... and for some reason, she was having trouble coming out and clearly saying what was in her heart. But she definitely didn't want to leave Sanskaar like this.
What could he do do simplify the situation... or at least 'postpone' this artificially created crisis point so that it bought Sanskaar and Swara some time?
He switched on his phone screen and dialled a number.

In the side verandah, door firmly shut against the rest of the family, Swara sat on a low jute stool. There were a profusion of potted plants and flowers here, as well as a diwan and plenty of garden chairs. But rejecting all these comfortable seats, Sanskaar sat in front of her on the ground, hands clasped around his knees, eyes intent on Swara.
"Swara, we don't have time for the kind of talk we need... but while all the elders wait for us outside, please just tell me clearly what you want... Don't be pressured by the hungama happening inside, don't think about anyone else, about anyone's opinion except your own... and maybe mine."
Swara looked at him, the sheen of tears in her eyes.
He looked at her and said deliberately, "Aaj... tum jaana chahti ho, ya rukna?"
Swara swallowed. "Rukna."
