Im not sure if you are reading this. ISP can also be found using IP addresses..

You can look at my IP now I wont put it up. Look at it from any IP finder, it will specify the name of my school. I consider that a pretty sensitive information even though I am not doing anything I consider not worth doing. there are many people here who browse from their office/school and that information is leakable.

If there is an MID finder from vbulletin, is that not safer than give IP access to all mods?

Hi Carolinecj,

Well I understand your point but the thing is again that IP access is available to a certain group for administrative purpose to combat trouble makers and keep the forum safe.

So do not worry on this.

Cheers,
Vijay

Having seen certain occurrences, I understand the importance of keeping trouble off this place. I can say since anybody can see where I am from, I wouldnt risk it in the first place.

well as long as you trust this group which numbers to more than 50 people having access to every single IP, it works perhaps.

It would be nicer if you can actually reduce this number.the final call is up to you.

Anyway thanks for responding.

I understand that admins may need certain information to function effectively, but is there really no other way ? People would be a lot more comfortable if they didn't have to think about their security being possibly compromised every time they logged in. And if there is no other way, seriously, it would be so much better to just allow the access at the admin level. I really hope you consider what is being suggested by everybody here. A lot of people have actually stopped posting or are considering not posting on IF because of these reasons.

Guys just did some little research on this !!!

I entered my address and found out my lattitude and longitude. But when i searched it on map it wasnt my address but the address of the company providing me the internet connection. But yes i could find out my OS , Web Browser (even the exact version of web browser ) . The display resolution and flash version.

Also it reveals the name of the ISP . But nothing more than that . I even read that the exact address cannot be located by people unless they approach the ISP with a valid reason to know the address. i.e. only the legal officials can get ur address with the help of IP address. Rest it will only state the city , state and ur country.

As Vijay said that the websites providing proxies cache information , so it may be risky. I dont think there is much risk if we browse through our own IPs.

But Vijay just a suggestion , if only more responsible people are given with the task of viewing and handling IPs. Maybe u could keep that power with the Admins and the Global Mods (or even with the Super Moderators). 😃

i did some research on it too..It depends on what kind of ISP u use.. if u are going to use a public ISP system like bsnl or mtnl it is not a big deal..

if u are using a private ISP like ur school/office connections, then that name can be identified and looking into the database of THAT systtem isnt going to take long

im not asking fr scrapping the system..but if the system's security level can be raised by moving it to one or 2 levels higher than the current level which is at the moderators, it wuld be generally helpful

i knw some of my friend shave stopped posting

PS: the most important point is why are even INACTIVE mods/CMs given the access?😕

Hey Guys.
I did my research too..
and a MOD can only view your IP/Raise WL if you've posted in the section they moderate.. obviously GMs can do this for whole of I-F, but the moderators (purple colour), can only do this for the section they are moderating..

Hi All,

First of all this IP thing is getting blown out of proportion. Someone knowing the IP cant do anything except knowing the person's City and the ISP the person might be using.

One cannot find the Street level, browser, operating system information. Like I said I am posting my IP : 59.182.178.30. (If someone probes it will just tell that it is Bombay (India) and I am using MTNL broadband. I dont consider it a security threat.

There are few things one should be careful about using internet are:

a) not to download and run any executable file from untrusted source.

b) Keep a good anti-virus software

c) Use licensed operating system and keep it updated and patched regularly.

d) Do not share personal information with people whom you do not know much.

For most of the users this is Dynamic and it changes everytime one connects to the internet.

So lets not create a sense of fear and panic among the users and giving ideas like using Proxies. As please remember that using Proxies are rather more unsafe as they can easily cache all your data (including passwords) as all information is getting passed through their system.

If you do not have a bad intent then you have no reason to worry also.

Regards,
Vijay Bhatter

Agreed Vijay, to a level but why cant this IP tracing option remain within the GMs and the Admin, why all DT members?
