in the light of some of the recent happenings, including personal info leak and IP address leak of several members on india-forums,id like to start a suggestions thread for security and internet safety on IFs..there are loads of stuff i dont know how to do and there are some tecchies out here on the forum who can help as well.iv realized that many of us dont know about using proxies to mask ur IP addresses.at the same time i personally dont know how to lock scrapbooks here.id request people to come up with whatever tips they have on their sleeves.

1. IP addresses: What is an IP Address?
Your computer uses IP addresses every time you are connected to the Internet. Your IP address is a number that is used by computers on the network to identify your computer so that data (such as the Web pages you request) can be sent to you
The IP address is the address of a machine on the Internet. If you connect to a web server
, it has to send the data back to you by IP address. If you send email, your IP address will be attached to it..Every connection you make has to have your IP address on it for any responses to get back to you.

If you're on a dial -up account, your IP address will probably change every time you dial in.If you use broadband, your IP address may only change every few months.
2.uses of IP address :
1.to trace geographic location information (city, state, country if available). For US based IP addresses 85% of the location information should be within 25 miles.
see this.put in ur own IP address and trace your location.
https://whatismyipaddress.com/staticpages/index.php/tools-visual-traceroute

2.if you email someone, then this email tracer could be used to identify it,based on the email header.
https://whatismyipaddress.com/staticpages/index.php/trace-email-source-IP-address

to sum up,your IP address can reveal the following info about you:
  • country
  • region
  • city
  • latitude
  • longitude
  • speed of connection
  • street address
  • network you are using
  • browser you are using
  • Operating System you are on
  • open ports-invaluable info to hackers
3.what can a hacker do with my IP address?

From a hacker's point of view, the IP address is what they'd connect to, so it would be the very first thing they'd need to know to attack you. It's fairly public knowlege, though, so it's not really a security risk as such. It's similar to your postal address, in that respect - a burglar won't have much trouble finding your house, but as long as the door is locked, you'll hope to keep them out.
BY GETTING THE IP ONE CAN CHECK THE SYSTEM PORTS
ALL OPEN PORTS CAN BE DETECTED AND A SUITABLE ONE CAN BE CHOSEN TO GET ACCESS INTO THE SYSTEM
MOREOVER HE CAN BREAK YOUR NETWORK DOWN WITH PING PROBES

If someone gets your ip address, he can connect to your computer, and pretty much do anything he wants to it. Someone can hack into ur computer as easy as a hot knife through butter! Yes that easy, someone who has msdos can type in a command ( which there are commands u will know). Some are delete, open, dis, and other simple commands. Followed after that a person would only have to put your IP address and hit a little button. And they would be connected. There are computers that have default passwords that you would need to type in in order to "hack". The default passwords are easy! Admin is an easy password.
theres an entire tutorial out there for hacking once you know someone IP address and its easy to google it out.You dont want any tom, dick, harry hacking into your system,do you?

4.can you hide your IP addresses?
Unfortunately, it is not technically possible to always hide the public IP address of a home network. An IP address enables devices to locate and communicate with each other on the Internet. Completely hiding the IP address of a device would render it invisible but also unusable online.

On the other hand, it is possible to hide public IP addresses from most Internet servers in most situations. This method involves an Internet service called an anonymous proxy server.

5.why do we need to use proxy servers?

A proxy server has many potential purposes, including:

  • To keep machines behind it anonymous (mainly for security).Security and privacy. Anonymous proxies destroys information about your computer in the requests header. So you can safely surf the net and your information will never be used by hackers and spammers.
  • To apply access policy to network services or content, e.g. to block undesired sites.
  • To scan transmitted content before delivery for malware.
  • To scan outbound content, e.g. for data leak protection.
6.proxies to use:
softwares:
free proxies:
k-proxy
hide-me-now
google for more

7.summary:for your own safety,
a)use proxy servers and IP masks.you dont want your IP exposed to someone you dont know ,and you never really know who is sitting on the other end.protect your privacy.dont let anyone post your street address here on IFs,since this is a public site
b)donot email random people.you are exposing your IP address on the email.want to know how easy this is?here..i found this on a website:

Download a keylogger - I would recommend go to "www.blazingtools.com" and download perfect keylogger. Using its remote installation you can embaade it to anything word file, pics, small .exe, I mean anything.E-mail it to your victim, they double click it, and wallah.

Do remeber to complete the settings section in the options tab, the keylogger will send the logs through SMTP mail server or FTP, whatever you deem fit.

c)donot add random people on facebook or other social networking sites.disable photo tagging.change settings to allow only friends to view your personal data.use proxies.

9.request to admins:
a)please disable the "search IP" option from the control panel of the DT and restrict it only to the admin level.
b)im posting a hack for detecting MIDs/spam...please implement it in lieu of searching IPs of members.
https://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=183268
c)please post tutorials on how to lock scrapbooks

Honestly Scary 😕
Thanks alot for the very informative post.
I completely agree with you for the request. The search proxy must be disabled for Moderators atleast so that it doesn't get misused.Bcuz of which we may end up at being in trouble.

Thanks once again for creating an awareness.

yea

considering how vulnerable IP addresses are, can we restrict the access to admins and GMs only

and use the MID hack instead of IP checks please?
