Rosh Hashanah, meaning the Head of the year, or beginning of yet another Jewish New Year is celebrated on the first day of Tishrei, which is the seventh month of the Hebrew Calendar and tenth day before Yom Kippur. Together Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah are known as the Yamim Nora'im, which means the Days of Awe in Hebrew or the High Holy Days in English.
Rosh Hashanah is celebrated as a day of rest. The month before Rosh Hashanah which is Elul, the Jews begin self examination and repentance which extends till Yom Kippur. A shofar is blown, every morning right from the beginning of the month of Elul till the month preceding Rosh Hashanah. The sound of Shofar intends to awaken the listeners and alert them to the coming Judgment Day. The name "Rosh Hashanah" is not used in the Bible to discuss this holiday. The Bible refers to the holiday as Yom Ha-Zikkaron (the day of remembrance) or Yom Teruah (the day of the sounding of the shofar). No work is permitted on Rosh Hashanah. Most of the day is spent in praying and in synagogue. Another important thing of this festival is eating of Apple and Honey.
