Dussehra celebrates the triumph of good over evil. According to the hindu mythology it is a day when Lord Rama killed Ravana, hence Dussehra festival signifies the victory and prevalence of truth. Since on this day Lord Rama killed the demon Ravan it is also called Vijaydashmi. India is a country of different cultures and traditions. People in India celebrate all the festivals with great zeal and warmth and Dussehra is one such festival. Dussehra is a hindu festival which is celebrated in various ways in different states and is a national holiday. As per the epic Ramayana, the day signifies victory of Rama, over Ravana. It is a 10 day's festival and during this period Ramlila is organized. Vijayadashmi is the last day of this festival. It is a sanskrit word where 'vijaya' means 'Victory' and 'dashmi' refers to the 'tenth day'. This day is celebrated by religious rituals by burning the effigies of Ravana which signifies the victory of good over evil. Crackers are also burnt which gives a sparkling end to this festival.
The tradition associated with the festival also relates to the epic of Mahabharata. On the day of Vijayadashmi Pandavas achieved victory over Kauravas. This day people exchange shami leaves and wish for each other a bright and prosperous future through postcards, ecards,e-greetings or greeting cards. Dussehra is celebrated in various ways in different parts of India. In Tamil Nadu, the festival incorporates worship of the goddesses Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Shakti alongwith Lord Ganesha. People visit each other and exchange sweets and gifts. This day is also known as 'Ugadi,' that is beginning of hindu new year. It marks the onset of spring, of new life and new beginning. People send each other greetings wishing their loved ones "Happy Ugadi". Dussehra marks the end of the festival of Navratri worshipping Goddess Durga for nine days followed by the immersion of the idol on the day of dushera. During Navratri thousands of devotees visit an old temple of 'Sri Durga Malleswar Swami,' in Vijaywada. Dussehra is celebrated in West Bengal as well. The puja is organised in two forms ' one is in the temple where the puja is observed with rituals for 10 to 16 days and the other way is forming different pandals with beautiful decoration and worshipping the goddess. Vijaya Dashami or Bijoya is known as the last day of Durga Puja and that day a tearful farewell is offered to the Goddess. In Nepal too, dusshera or dashain is the biggest festival.
