5. THE LIVING GUILT 2

Neha entered with few documents and putting them on Deepika's table and turned around to look at Rituparna. The chair was empty. She looked at Deepika thinking. She was making her way to the door when the realization flooded her…She looked back shocked.

Neha: No Deepika… You will not.

Deepika: Kya Neha?

Neha: Nahi tum aisa kuch nahi karogi…

Deepika: Kya… Mujhe kuch…

Without a word Neha crossed the room and turned the screen towards her… Her fear was confirmed.
On the screen ran the heading: Request for transfer….

Neha closed the window. Deepika turned towards her annoyed.

"Neha tum ye kya kar rahi ho? Please…"

Neha: Promise me you won't. (meekly) Don't.

Deepika looked down her eyes avoiding Neha's.
Neha left the room silently and sat in her cubicle. The day came back to her… The day Shyna had left Special Squad… And now Deepika too…

Three days later, when Deepika came out of the Commissioner's office she was startled to see Rituparna there. He too appeared surprised. She gave a brief nod of recognition and lef t the place without a word. Rituparna entered the Commissioner's office alone.

Rituparna: Sir. Woh Deepika…?

He silently handed him the document she had left. Looking at it Rituparna was filled with despair.

Rituparna: No sir we cannot allow this. Hum use jaane nahi de sakte.

Commissioner: I agree with you. Not with the end in sight. Don't worry I have asked her to reconsider. Waise ye lo. Ye tumhara in-charge officer hoga. CBI aur Special Squad me moderator ki tarah. Aur doosri toh…tum jaante hi ho...

Rituparna studied the paper carefully. He was fairly pleased with the choice of the first officer. The in-charge. He read the names of the rest of the team. However his face broke into a smile as he read the last name… He motioned the paper towards the Commissioner.
He said,"Thank you for granting my request. "
The Commissioner smiled.
"We need her. Upar se bhi uski khas sifarish aayi hai. Ye uska naya number."
Rituparna noted it down and after exchanging pleasantries with the Commissioner, he left the place.

6. RECOGNITION

SPECIAL SQUAD OFFICE
INNER CABIN

Ajay skipped in. He flashed a wide smile at Rituparna and exited. Deepika looked at this silent exchange, puzzled. Ajay and Boxer had been behaving weirdly with Rituparna. Neha too was showering him with generous smiles, looking at him with pride and happiness. And Rituparna too seemed on the ninth cloud. She wondered what had happened yesterday at Ajay's house which had altered their behavior. Rituparna however knew the exact reason.

YESTERDAY
AJAY'S HOUSE
Neha and Boxer were frequent visitors to Ajay's house but Deepika was going to his house for the first time. All had decided to meet in the parking lot at 12. Neha had already proceeded, eager to help her future mother-in-law and Boxer and Shotgun, restless with all the delicious smells wafting down, had been drawn to Ajay's house. Rituparna was standing alone for the last fifteen minutes, waiting patiently. At 12:20, Deepika arrived.
Rituparna looked at her stunned. She was clad in simple blue salwar kameez with a periwinkle blue dupatta, but by heavens above, she was looking gorgeous.
Deepika: I am sorry mai late ho gayi... Ma ka phone aaya tha...
She smiled aplogetically
But Rituparna was too awed by her appearance, he could scarcely stammer.

Rituparna: Woh mai...

Deepika: Chalo na...

She started for the stairs and Rituparna followed her, still reeling from the pleasant shock. He had seen her in crisp shirts and suits for so long, he had forgotten she could possibly wear anything else rather he had never even thought something like this. It was the beautiful March air or what, but smelling her musky perfume which wafted down to him he felt giddy, happy. It was the first time he had ever noticed her, and she had surpassed all his beliefs and expectations. Smiling, he thought 'beautiful' was a word that would never apply to Deepika Ghosh but now... things had changed...drastically.Confused by his dreamy walk; Deepika turned around abruptly and came face to face with him.

Deepika: Kya kar rahe ho? Chalo na...

Rituparna, captured by those eyes, and the delicate kajal circumscribing them, he nodded mutely.

Ajay's mother had cooked delicacies especially for them. She was impressed by Neha who had helped her out with all the housework and cooking and was elated by the prospect of such a dutiful daughter-in-law.
Ajay was observing Rituparna all the time they were eating. Rituparna had relished the food, but had made mistakes which had not escaped Ajay's eyes. He did not eat the neem chutney at the start and was clearly unfamiliar with the concept of waran-bhat. He put down his spoon tiredly, sweet drowsiness settling on his eyes by the food, he got up and went to the washbasin. Ajay was standing next to it.

Ajay: Khaana pasand aaya?

Rituparna: Bahut hi lazeez tha... Tumhara maa bahut accha khaana pakati hai...

Ajay nodded.

Ajay: Aur neem ki chutney?

Rituparna: Haan, bahut kadvi thi. Mujhe use pehle hi khaani....

And then he realized his mistake....

Ajay: (nodding seriously) Woh neem ki chutney... Waran bhaat par tumhara muh... Tum Marathi to ho hi nahi sakte...

Ajay pulled him behind a curtain.

Ajay: Tumhare pay cheques kahan jaate hai iska pata kiya hai maine... Jaldi bol kaun hai tu?

Rituparna smiled, impressed.

Rituparna: Meri team competent hai ye mujhe pata tha... Par itni... Ye nahi pata tha... Ajay... Tumne pehchana nahi?

Ajay's grip loosened on Rituparna's shirt as he recognised the voice and the tone.
Ajay: (stammering) tu...Tum???

Rituparna had smiled when Ajay had pulled him in a bone cracking hug and tears seeped out of their eyes. And Boxer too had to be told. And life smiled at Rituparna more than it ever had ever for the past two months
