Dear , when lakshman gave up his life for the sake of Ayodhya , ram was fully shattered and filled with guilt of losing his dearest brother .
See , when Sita died, ram not gave up his life because he knew that lakshman is still with him as a strong support but when lakshman died , he too gave up his life because he wasn't able to bear the separation from his brother.
And if anyone loves u very much and can do anything for your sake , it is very difficult to overcome the pain of getting separated from them , same was with ram and lakshman ,ram couldn't able to live more without lakshman because the love that lakshman had given to Ram was beyond explanation and ram ends his life reuniting with Sita and lakshman as lakshmi and shesh naag in divine aspect.

But he had lost the trust of his praja bu openly joining hands with ram

So mandodari's presence was needed as a bridge between the king and his audience , till thier confidence was fully restored
