Today when Ram was doing asthi visarjan he said now I take the responsibility of all your unfinished works and with that I free you of all worldly things. This made me think what really happens after death ? Every religion has its own theories, some say that reach heaven or hell depending on our deeds, according to some we go to next world and continue our journey there. But as per Hindu beliefs when we die only our body dies, the soul simply moves to new body. Soul is neither created nor destroyed (As per modern science energy is neither created nor destroyed) so according to that death is simply soul changing bodies.

The question arises does the soul remembers its previous body ? Like where it was ? What is was ? Etc. I have heard people claiming that they remember about their past life or they get glimpses of the same. In psychology we have 'past life regression' which claims that at times the cause of psychological problems lies in past life. In this therapy they try make the patient recall events of his/her past live. So does soul remembers its past life ? Does is remember about unfulfilled desires or duties ? If yes then does it happen to everyone ? At times people find an unprecedented sense of connection to a certain place or certain person, does it have anything to with soul ? Is it the soul that recalls being in that place in previous life and hence the connection ? At times we develop a very strong affinity with people we barely know, is it because our souls had some previous connection with that person's soul ?

As per Hindu philosophy a soul finally gets moksha when it has gone through all the trail and tribulations it was meant to go, when it has completed all its journey in every possible form.

In Hinduism, the body that the soul has on earth is temporary. After death, this body decays.. the soul however remains. It does not directly pass on into another body again.

In short summary, the soul stands trial for its karma. Based on it it goes through heaven/hell.. At the end of some time period it is reborn. The birth may not be in the same species.. Say for example, a man may not be reborn as man again.. He may be reborn as a vulture or a cat or a cow.. It depends on his sins and karma. The cycle continues until its final liberation attaining Moksha. This would take numerous different births to achieve.

Most souls do not remember their previous birth. It is said that when one is in the trails in hell, they remember all their past births and karmas. The child within a mother's womb remembers it but the minute it is born, the memory vanishes.

It is however also considered that our sub conscious retains some of these memories.. especially the punishments from hell and this is why sometimes we stop ourselves from doing something fearing a dire consequence. We call it instinct, consciousness.. etc.

For some though, it is possible to see their previous births and their future. the Rishis could do it. Perhaps there are exceptions to even men and women in this accord and they see their previous births? I am not sure.

@bold: I also have heard that in whatever state we are born today, watever situation and psyche we have are a reflectn of our past deeds. We are doin things that wud add to the good and bad of our soul and the next birth will be based on the cumulative effect of all the deeds till now. The cycle goes on and on and on and for the liberation of the soul, one has to take so many births to balance out ultimately.

@sumedha I have heard that in Kaliyug chanting the name of " Hari" itself earnestly grants moksha to someone.
Coming to soul I have also heard that it changes bodies. The physical cover changes but the inner core remains intact.
Am not sure whether we can remember past life, but then there are certain decisions which we take the knowledge of which may not be in present life. Certain knowledge which we cannot explain logically. Maybe that comes from our past life knowledge.
I have also heard that the astrological chart at the time of birth depicts the path based on our karma balance in previous birth and based on the karma in this life that path can be changed.

First, whether a soul exist? Is so, does it have memory? If it has, will it decode the same in his new shell/body? All these questions can be answered if and only if we believe the bottom line that our inner consciousness can act without the signal from brain.

To know how our current scientific world treat the concept of soul (theory of biocentrism), read the link, if interested.

@Ramya I know that aspect. I have read something on it when I was reading Dan Brown's " The Lost symbol". It had dealt with the measurement of existence of soul. At that time I had read some aspects on whether any scientific theory exists on this aspect or it is purely writer's imagination.

@Shruthi: Theory of biocentrism is not accepted by the scientific world but the scientist Dr.Lanza works on it. Though, it can't be proved as of now, you can't deny anything in the scientific world.
Search for soul in pubmed and you end up with 100's of scientific publications (not from Indians)

@Ramya have you read " The Lost symbol". In the book actually the scientist proves the existence of soul through an experiment on a dying man. First the man is weighed to some 6th or 7th decimal point. And immediately after death happens he is measured again. And it shows a slight weight difference showing that difference is the weight of the soul that has left the body . I am not sure whether it is possible in the real world.

It is not science fiction. Actually Dan brown's books Da vinci code, Lost Symbol and Inferno are controversial in their own way.
Reason he takes on Christianity and its tenets head on telling they have buried the real knowledge which was available with nature worshippers. If you read his books you can see in the cult group theories which he discusses are very much related to that of Sanathana Dharma. And the interest of modern science in those things.
Da Vinci Code I guess is banned by Vatican and many of my Christian friends have refused to read it.
