I don't think the makers are going for a Maunal ending at all. I think their ending is actually determined by hopefully their good conscience but also by what the viewers want. And it's very evident by polls upon polls that viewers want Ishaali. That's the perfect ending and that's why even in the last week they have began developing Ishaan's character more and Mauli-Ishaan's love story more.
Warna from the first episode introduction of Ishaan, though he and Mauli were shown to be friendly, Mauli was always awkward about marrying him, would often ignore his talks of marriage (like the kamar band scene), even when she did agree to get engaged she did it cause of Kunal and not for her own self or feelings, she told Radhika that you only fall in love once, she was hesitant during the whole engagement scene/dance, so on so forth.
But this past week she has finally accepted him whole heartedly and is actually falling in love and moving on.
The amnesia track is just to make Kunal regret his mistakes, and for his character to end on a good note with the viewers.
