Such a balanced and honest post!
I see all these aspects of God and the universe trying to bring KuNan together in a different manner, so I am okay with it. I have more than one way of looking at it, and here they are...
Indian television has a tendency to show that the couple who will be the end game are destined to be together by God or the universe for the element of drama. So there's always that; the theme real, but there will always be the drama bit. 😊
What if God actually wants KuNan to be together, in spite of all the chaos it'll cause? I am not a huge believer, but every person has a unique relationship with and perception of God. There is no universal definition of His plan, that's why we have so many religions and sub-sects within each religion. And even the people belonging to the same sub-sect may interpret God differently. Personally, I don't think the show portraying that God is bringing KuNan together is wrong, because if He's indicating their union, He has a reason and a plan, both of which we know nothing about. In the show of course, the makers are playing God, because that's their job. Nandini is reading the signs from God as those indicating that Kunal is her future. It's her way of interpreting God and also of falling in love with Kunal, because neither has a defined set of rules.
As for destiny, I don't really believe in it. I think it's just a term for a string of events that have made something happen, and not because it is meant to happen. The Butterfly Effect is a fitting example to show how even a small incident can change the course of people's lives drastically. I met my husband when I was going through a bad breakup, after having a series of self-destructive relationships. I was fed up and just wanted to get done with the entire relationship fiasco, so agreed to marry him. Maybe I wouldn't have if everything in my life wasn't going on exactly the way it was. Unlike the events in our life, the events in a fictional show are controlled by a set of people, and they are showing how a series of events are bringing KuNan closer. The elements of destiny, God's plan, and the universe's conspiracy are only their way of giving a concrete term or definition to the chain of events.
The show is more of KuNan's story than anybody else's, so the makers are focusing on their points of view more than Mauli's. Showing the suffering of a wife because of a cheating husband and the emotions she's going through has been done in several shows and movies, for example, Balika Vadhu, Biwi No. 1, Astitva, Kora Kagaz, Saans, Kyunki, YHM, and so on. The cheating spouse is always shown in a negative light and the other spouse in a positive one. In this show, they're showing how two good people can fall into something as wrong as an extramarital affair and the journey of conflicts and emotions they go through. The makers are not showing them as 'mahaan'. But yes, they are showing them trying to do the right thing, even though their heart aches for each other. And the best part is that, in the midst of all this, they aren't painting Mauli as a negative character. They may not be focusing on her point of view, but they are showing her to be the best wife that there is. And probably that's the reason why viewers want Kunal and Nandini to be portrayed as negative. Because if Mauli was negative, then there wouldn't have been a problem at all. Then all these signs from God, destiny, and the universe would have been welcome.
Also, I don't think KuNan are being whitewashed. Instead, they're being depicted as two very human people with human emotions. This is the 'other' side of the extramarital story that people don't want to hear. This is the side that shows how real, true, deep and meaningful a forbidden relationship can be, and that is difficult for many viewers to digest. The fact that this forbidden relationship is the highlight of the show gives the impression to some people that the relationship is being justified. On an emotional level, every personal relationship is justified, because emotions are the very base of these relationships. Within the circle of KuNan's relationship, it's about the two people who are in it, and in that circle, their relationship is not wrong, and their emotions are not tainted. It's when the people outside that circle come in that everything in the relationship looks dark and questions are raised about why they fell for each other so quickly in spite of Kunal being in a happy marriage. But in KuNan's circle, these questions have no place. The show is now focusing on what is going on inside the circle, and if that means justifying it, then so be it. I know for sure that a major part of the show will deal with the chaos that will follow when people outside the circle, especially Mauli and Rajdeep get involved. So I'm totally okay with the way KuNan's story is progressing right now. It's only going to be troubled times ahead for these two.
