Onset - Shree
The lead pair of Shree do a puja to seek blessings for their show in Mumbai. Picture by Sudeshna Banerjee

Kripaya shanti banaye rakhen. Who are these words, written at the entrance of Mansukh Compound studios in Mumbai, meant for?

Inside, a puja is on, with a priest chanting mantras as three figures sit reverentially by the fireside. One is a producer and the other two the lead actors of the show being launched. With the god Shani, a trouble-giver, being invoked, whose evil eye is being warded off?

The launch of Shree, a serial for Zee TV, is giving rise to more questions than answers when the show reel reveals the tagline "Pavitra bandhan par ashubh saaya". "It is a love story with a supernatural element," announces producer J.D. Majethia. And that element is malevolent. "It will create problems for whoever wants to get close to Hari."

So Shree, the leading lady and Hari's heartthrob-designate, is in for trouble. And it doesn't help that Wasna Ahmed, who plays Shree, is hardly a braveheart. "I believe in ghosts just as I believe in God," she admits humbly. "I can't see horror films without people around."

Seated next to her is a woman with unkempt hair and wild eyes. She is the madwoman in Shree's village. Hari's first shot with her required him to open the door, see her screaming and step back in fright. "The boy (Pankaj Singh Tiwari) had not seen me before off-camera. He opened the door and there I was in character. Though he knew what to expect, he was so scared that he leapt out of camera range. The look was so natural on his face that the director kept the reaction shot and got him to retake the rest," smiles Pratima T., a theatre veteran.

Frankly, Pankaj could not be blamed.

But the makers have no intention to scare the weak-hearted. "The show is a cocktail of comedy, love story and family drama," Majethia says. "We've not tried to force in the supernatural. When there is a comedy track, it will be comedy," assures director Ankush Mohta.

In the next room, a shot is being canned. A figure with her arms spread draped in a black robe sways as the camera captures the shadow. The shot okayed, out of the robe emerges Sharmila Shettigar, an assistant director. She is the body of a spirit. "I haven't told folks at home. Let's see if they know me from the shadow," she smiles. Comedy of horrors?

Will Ketkie be the ghost in Shree?

Ketkie, popularly known as Nandini (Jassuben Jayantilal Joshi ki Joint family), has been approached to portray a ghost in Zee TV's Shree. But will she be the only ghost? 'Remains the question.
"Yes, I have been approached but things are yet to be finalized. I've had my auditions but I am waiting for the channel's call," says Ketkie. Producer J.D Majethia reveals "We have recommended Ketkie to the channel and now it is for the channel to make its decision."

Presently in the story Shree (Wasana Ahmed) and Hari (Pankaj Tiwari) are deeply in love with each other and are to set to get married. But there is an evil spirit lingering over Hari which always keeps him away from his love.

According to a source, the history of the evil spirit is that the ghost, Kangna, was madly in love with Hari and she was overprotective of him. Post her sudden death, her soul, in search of Hari, will get to him through any circumstance. When she comes to know Hari is to get married to someone else, she begins to haunt him.

Kangna's role, if she bags it, will be long; as JD tells us "She's the spirit, hence her role cannot be a cameo."

Who will play the spirit is still unknown and will remain so for a while since the cast has only just been finalized.

Balika's Sughna to play Shree's Kangna

After hunting for a proper face who can portray role of the spirit in Shree (ZEE, Monday to Thursday at 10.30PM) the channel has finally settled on Vibha Anand who is presently seen playing the innocent Sughna in Balika Vadhu (Colors).

ACCORDING to a source, "She will be playing Kangna's role. She came in for the auditions recently and we have finalized that she is doing it."
But interestingly Vibha continues to strongly deny the news. "I was just approached for it in December but I didn't give any auditions. And after that I haven't been in touch with them as I have been too busy with Balika."

But the source tells us that very soon the channel will be announcing Anand's entry. "Many people were approached for the role. The channel initially wanted a new face but then towards the end the two names who were in the running were Vibha Anand who plays Sughna in Balika Vadhu and Ketkie J who portrayed the role of Nandini in Jasuben Jayantilal Joshi ki Joint Family."

"Yes the production had approached me and they even loved my look in the test. I trust JD bhai because I know that he knew that I suited the role but he was waiting for Zee's decision and so I was told to wait. But Zee recommended Vibha.. So I knew what was happening and now if Vibha is doing it I have no issues about that. I know Hats-off trust me, if not this then something better," says Ketkie.

The promos showing Kangna's entry are already on air. "Kangna's entry was supposed to be shown long back but since the face was not decided it was stalled. Currently the person portraying Kangna is actually a junior artist!" says the source.

Vibha Anand is expected to begin shooting for Shree soon.

Hats Off Productions' supernatural love story Shree, which airs on Zee TV, is all set to give audiences a clearer picture of the mystery by revealing the drama behind the Mehsani mangalsutra in a special one hour episode this Thursday, April 16.

"This is a special episode. There is a story about the character Hari that will affect Shree and some interesting things will then unfold," says J.D Majethia.

The show will also be introducing new and interesting characters called Bindiya and Kangana in some time.

Vibha Anand is set to scare!

Vibha Anand is all set to make a scary appearance on Shree (Zee TV). The actress plays Kangna, a spirit who has possessed Bindiya's (Madhurimma Tuli) body and is creating trouble for her cousin Shree and the family.

FROM playing the simple girl Sughna on Balika Vadhu to an evil spirit in Shree, an excited Vibha says the experience has been wonderful. She adds, "I've worked very hard to portray this character Kangna. I just hope and pray that audiences accept me."
Anand talks about her look on the serial, saying, "I will have very long hair, wear a white salwar kameez and bandhini ki odhni… I just love my look! I worked hard on my voice and expressions because I have to sound and look convincing."

The actress took up the role because she longed to play a negative character. "Firstly, I wanted to play negative role and secondly, the character sounded very interesting. As an actor, I can learn a lot from it and hence I accepted," says Vibha.

The 17-year-old hasn't ever had a supernatural experience yet she is terrified of ghosts. "I've heard of many stories but I've never experienced it myself. But I do believe that evil exists and I am very scared of ghosts!" she says.

However, she loves watching horror movies, saying, "I can't watch them alone but I do love watching scary films with my mom. I loved Raaz and I also saw Koi Aane Ko Hai's first story- it was awesome. I just loved Leena Jumani's work."

Vibha shot for her role on Shree yesterday and her entry will be telecast tonight at 10:30pm on Zee TV.
