Part 8

“But Dad…”

“No Shaurya. If anyone in the house comes to know that you were trying to stop this divorce, they will not take it lightly. Especially your Badima.” Shaan said.

“This is all your fault. No one would have known had you not come here to spy on them.” Anokhi chided Shaurya.

“No one would have known if you had not started with your train of sneezes.” Shaurya retorted.

“That is not fair. How would I know that I am allergic to those flowers.”

“Well, you should have.”

“Sir, if you want to fight please stand aside. My other customers are waiting.” The gola vendor interrupted.

“Shut up and don’t disturb me. I will buy all your golas. Ask your other customers to leave.” Shaurya ordered the vendor.

“If you have so much money, give it to some charity. Why do you want to deprive people of golas in this sweltering heat?” Anokhi charged him on behalf of all gola lovers.

Watching them bickering, Aastha and Shaan exchanged glances.

“Shaurya, I think she is right. Why don’t you drop her off at the flat. You can continue fighting in the car if you want, and no one will disturb you.” Aastha suggested.

“No Mam. I am not going anywhere with him. He always shouts at me. I am coming with you.” Anokhi said looking at Aastha.

“I am sorry dear but I have to go and meet the lawyer now. If you come with me, you will get late for the classes.” Aastha explained.

“Fine, then I will go on my own.” Anokhi said adamantly.

“Stop acting like a child and get inside the car.” Shaurya ordered.

“If this is how you are going to talk to me, I am not even going near your car.” Anokhi answered.

Shaurya helplessly looked towards his parents. This girl keeps trying his patience.

“She is right Shaurya. First you should say sorry for shouting at her.” Shaan said

“Why should I say sorry when she was the one to start the fight?” Shaurya asked, feeling hurt at his father siding with Anokhi.

“Sometimes you have to bow down before your woman even when you are not wrong.” Shaan said, stealing a glance at Aastha.

Aastha rolled her eyes, “When was the last time you did that?”

Shaan suddenly became silent.

Noticing things turning serious, Anokhi said, “Okay fine. I am coming with you, Shaurya Sir. Let’s go.” Saying this, she started walking towards his car.

In the evening after returning from college, Anokhi was surprised to find Aastha unpacking her things. She was so happy that in her excitement she went and hugged Aastha from behind.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you so much Mam.”

“Thank you for what?” Aastha asked.

Anokhi came in front of her and said, “For rethinking your decision. You are unpacking. That means you are not going anywhere.”

Aastha laughed at her innocence. Then said, “I am sorry to disappoint you but I did not rethink my decision. But I cannot go back immediately all thanks to you. We have asked the lawyer to prepare a fresh set of divorce papers. That will take a few days’ time, and then there will be a hearing. Therefore I will have to stay till then. Now go and change. I will get tea for you.”

Anokhi’s face fell. She sat down quietly.

“What is the matter with you? Didn’t I ask you to go and change?” Astha asked impatiently.

“Why are you doing this, Mam? You said you agreed to the divorce because you thought it would make Shaan Sir and Shaurya Sir happy. Now that you know none of them are happy with it, what is the use?”

“Shaurya is not happy because Shaan is not happy. He wanted to stop the divorce for his father. Not because he has any feelings for me.” Aastha tried to reason.

Anokhi stood up and looked straight at Aastha’s face and said, “You are wrong. You left him so many years ago but despite that he loves you.”

The determination in her voice startled Aastha.

“In the morning Shaurya was defending you. Now you are defending him. What is up with the two of you? One cannot hear a word against the other. You seem to understand him better than he himself does.”

Anokhi blushed. She quickly ran towards her room to hide her embarrassment.

She sat down on her bed. She could feel the thumping of her heart. Why was she feeling that way? How did she suddenly become so protective of that grumpy professor? Anokhi didn’t know the answers, but something felt so good. She started humming a tune and went to the washroom to freshen up.

Meanwhile Shaurya was in his room contemplating whether he should call Anokhi. He didn’t know what he should talk about as their partnership was over. His parents were firm on their plan of divorce. There is nothing he could do to stop it. In fact Dad looked quite happy today. Everyone else in this house was also happy. Why is he the only one who is feeling disappointed. He wanted to share his thoughts with someone, but no one in this house would understand. He browsed through the call list on his phone and stopped at Anokhi’s number. Without hesitating further, he dialled her number.

He waited with baited breath for her to pick up the call. There was no answer. Even she has no time for him. Shaurya threw the phone away in his irritation. There was a knock on the door.

“May I come in?”

Shaurya looked up to find it was his father.

“Please come in Dad.”

“She did not pick up your call?”

Shaurya was shocked. “Who Dad?”

Shaan came and picked the phone from the ground and handed it over to him saying, “Anokhi, with whom else will you get so irritated ?”

“She is an airhead Dad. First she makes mistakes and then puts all the blame on me. I don’t understand what to do with her. All through the car journey back from the park, she kept sulking. I offered to drop her at the college but she wouldn’t listen. Such a stubborn girl.” Shaurya said, letting out his frustration.

“She really riles you up. Doesn’t she? The calm and suave professor Shaurya Sabharwal seems to lose all his control around her.” Shaan remarked.

“You are right. She irritates me to no end. I am giving up on her.” Shaurya said, raising his palms.

“She didn’t receive your call once and you are giving up. Sabharwal men are not ones who yield so easily. Come now, dial her number once again.” Shaan tried to encourage him.

Shaurya was confused. The hint of mischief in his father’s eye didn’t escape him. Could Dad read his mind?

“Come on. Do it. What are you waiting for?”

“But what if she doesn’t pick up again?” Shaurya hesitated.

“She will, unless she is really caught up in something else. Aastha cannot be this wrong about her student.” Shaan said.

“What do you mean?” Shaurya asked.

“Nothing. You make the call. I think I should give you some privacy and leave from here.” Shaan said, getting up. He could not tell Shaurya that he was on a call with Aastha a few moments back and she informed him about Anokhi’s budding feelings.

“Dad” Shaurya called out as Shaan was about to leave.

Shaan turned back questioningly.

“Have you already asked the lawyer to make a fresh petition? Are you sure you don’t want to give it another thought?”

“Yes, I am quite sure.” Shaan said.

“But was the divorce really necessary? Things could have continued to be like they were. You don’t need to marry Sheetal just for getting funds. I don’t want to buy my dreams with your happiness.”

“Don’t worry. Things can no more continue to be the same. Change is inevitable. Change is the only constant, Shaurya.” Saying this he left.

Shaurya one by one dialled the numbers of all of Shaan’s friends but he was with none of them. Has he really gone to meet Aastha Kashyap? But Anokhi did not mention him being there. Should he call her again and ask? But she has classes to attend. He should not always disturb her like that. He would himself go there and check.

Shaurya pressed the calling bell and waited. To his surprise Anokhi opened the door.

“What are you still doing here? Don’t you have classes?” He asked

“No, the first half classes are cancelled. I will go in the second half. Now tell me why you cut the call abruptly? What kind of manners is this?” She asked accusingly.

“I am sorry. Something really important came up. Dad left the house early in the morning. Now he is not picking up calls. I came to find out if he was here.” Shaurya replied.

By then Aastha had arrived at the door. She looked at Shaurya’s worried countenance and asked, “What is the matter, Shaurya? Is everything alright? Why don’t you come inside?”

To this Anokhi answered. “Shaan Sir is not picking up calls. Perhaps he is upset about the engagement.”

Aastha looked at her in surprise and said, “How did you come to know about the engagement?”

Anokhi started fumbling, “Oh...I mean...I heard it from Bebo and Kitty in college.”

Shaurya gave a sigh of relief. This girl cannot keep anything to herself.

Aastha now turned to Shaurya and asked, “Have you called his friends?”

“Yes, but none of them know of his whereabouts.”

Aastha kept quiet for a few moments and then said, “Don’t worry, I will find him and send him home.”

“Do you know where he is?” Shaurya asked.

“I have some idea about where he might be.” Aastha said.

“Then give me the address. You don’t have to take the trouble. You should concentrate on your packing.” Shaurya said.

“Please Shaurya, let me handle this. I promise he will be back home safely.” Aastha requested.

“Then I am coming with you.” Shaurya was adamant.

Aastha was about to say something, when Anokhi interrupted, “I think you should let her go alone. If he is heartbroken about the engagement then only Aastha mam can convince him.”

“Ok fine, I am leaving for now. But when you meet him, ask him to give me a call.” Saying this he left.

Soon after Aastha left, Anokhi locked the door and went downstairs. Shaurya was waiting in his car at some distance. She immediately got in and said, “this way, I have got the address.”

“How did you get the address? She could not tell me but she told you.” Shaurya said, starting the car.

“No stupid…I mean I am so sorry Sir, I did not mean to call you stupid. It just slipped off my tongue.” Anokhi was embarrassed.

“Call me anything you want. Now tell me how you got the address.”

“I sneaked a glance while she was booking the app cab, simple. You have an in-house spy. Why to worry.”

“Do you want a pat on the back, Miss James Bond?” Shaurya asked, sarcastically. Then he added, “How did you know I would be still here?”

“Because you are stubborn like your mom. Only I know how to handle the two of you.” Anokhi said proudly.

“Stop gloating. And she is not my Mom.”

“And we are going in circles again.” Anokhi shook her head in disappointment.

Aastha could identify Shaan from a distance. He was sitting on the park bench. There were not many people at this time of the day. Most of the morning walkers had left. Some gardeners were tending to the plants. This was the same park the two would often visit back in the college days.

She walked up to him and said softly, “Shaan”

He turned. His eyes were red and swollen. It looked as though he hadn’t slept the whole night.

She sat by his side and said, “What is this behaviour Shaan? How come you just leave without informing anyone? And you are not picking up anyone’s calls. Do you know how worried Shaurya is? He even came to the flat looking for you.”

“I am sorry. I was feeling so suffocated in that house. I needed some fresh air and some time to think. I know how much I have hurt you with the divorce. I did not have the courage to face you. So I came here.” Shaan said, without looking at her.

“I can understand, but you are doing this for Shaurya, right?”

Shaan hesitated a bit.

Aastha could sense something was amiss. She looked into his eyes and said again, “You know when I gave the signed divorce papers to Shaurya, he did not look very happy about it. In fact I could somewhere sense disappointment.”

Shaan was surprised. “You signed the papers and gave them to Shaurya?”

Aastha nodded.

Meanwhile Anokhi and Shaurya reached the park.

“There they are.” Anokhi pointed in the direction where Shaan and Aastha were sitting.

“What are they talking about?” Shaurya wondered aloud.

“How will I know from such a distance?”

“Come, let us find out.” Shaurya said and held Anokhi’s hand.

“Excuse me, someone was teaching me how eavesdropping is a bad habit. What happened now?” Anokhi said, while being dragged by Shaurya behind a bush.

“Shhh...can’t you shut your mouth for a second? They will hear us.” Shaurya whispered.

“Not until we can hear them. We are still too far to hear anything.” Anokhi said.

“Ok, come behind me. Slowly. Crouch down so that they cannot see you.” Shaurya suggested.

Anokhi giggled. “I have no fear as long as you are in front of me. You are so tall that you can’t avoid being noticed even if you crouch.”

“Shut up and just follow me.” Shaurya said, getting irritated.

They came and hid behind a bush and tried to listen to Shaan and Aastha’s conversation.

“I gave those to him the day before yesterday when he came to the flat.” Aastha said.

“Strange, he never said anything about it.” Shaan was confused.

Here behind the bush.

“Are they talking about you?” Anokhi asked Shaurya.

Shaurya tried hard to control his growing temper and said, “If you don’t stop talking how will I listen to them?”

“What is going on with him?” Aastha asked.

“Shaurya Sir.” Anokhi poked him with her finger.

“If you don’t keep quiet I am going to put a sellotape on your mouth.”

“But I am feeling a strange irritation in my nose.”

“Then close your nose and breath with your mouth.” Shaurya muttered without looking towards her.”

“AA aa ai..choooo”

The sound of the sneeze alerted Shaan and Aastha. They got up and looked around.

Shaurya stared at Anokhi angrily while she continued like a non stop train. “Aichoo...aichoo...aaaichooo.”

“Shaurya Anokhi, what are you doing here?” Shaan asked, surprised.

Shaurya was dumbfounded. He looked here and there trying to come up with an explanation. He looked towards Anokhi. She had finally stopped sneezing. Her face had become red like an apple.

“Were you following me?” Aastha asked, frowning.

“No mam...I mean...I am sorry..b..but”, Anokhi kept stammering.

“Leave that, tell me Shaurya, has Aastha given you the divorce papers?” Shaan asked, looking at Shaurya.

Shaurya looked down and nodded.

“Then why did you not tell me?” Shaan asked, surprised.

Shaurya could not think of what to say. Then suddenly pointed at Anokhi and said, “She tore them off.”

Anokhi was shocked. She looked at him accusingly.

“Anokhi, what kind of childish behaviour is this? Why did you tear the papers?” Aastha said, in an admonishing tone.

“I am sorry Mam. I could not see you in pain. I know how much the divorce would hurt you.” Anokhi said, her voice almost cracking .

“Anokhi, you should keep one thing in mind. You are still just a student. And what happens in my personal life should be none of your business. It was my mistake to ask your help during Shaurya’s birthday and I am sorry for that. From now on, it would be better if you keep away from this. Have I made myself clear?” Aastha said, in an icy cold voice.

Anokhi has never heard her Aastha Mam talking to her in this manner. Tears started rolling down her cheeks.

Shaurya could not see her like this. He came and stood between Anokhi and Aastha, as if guarding the former and said, “Why are you blaming her when she was trying to help you? This girl has done so much for you and this is what she gets in return. I know you never cared about me or Dad, and this divorce is just a piece of paper for you. But I could see how miserable this was making Dad. He still cares a lot about a self-centered person like you and this divorce would break him. That is why I asked Anokhi’s help to stop it.” Shaurya was breathing heavily. He paused a bit and then said, “Anokhi come, let’s go from here.”

As he turned around he realised she was not there. He could see her running towards the park exit. Shaurya gave a disappointed look to his parents and ran towards Anokhi.

Shaan touched Aastha on the shoulders. “Are you okay? I am sorry that Shaurya talked to you like that.”

“I am fine. I should get used to him talking to me like that. You know all these years, I was not allowed to see him. I went to your house, to his school, even to the hospital where he was admitted and waited for hours, but Devi bhabi would always be around. She would create a scene and I had to leave. And when he was grown up, I hesitated to approach him fearing how he would react. I imagined all sorts of situations in my mind where he would batter me with his hatred. I was scared, and kept away from him. Now that I have faced him and my own demons, I feel a lot more free. I guess hatred is far better than indifference, isn’t it?” Astha said, trying to force a smile.

“Anokhi, Anokhi wait.” Shaurya came and caught her hand.

“Go away, I am not talking to you. How could you throw me under the bus like that?” Anokhi said, still crying.

“I am really sorry for that but I also defended you, didn’t you hear it? I admitted that it was my idea, and they should not scold you for it.”

Anokhi didn’t say anything. She sat down on a bench, sulking.

Shaurya could not understand what to do. He knelt on the ground before her and said, “That grumpy face is my trademark. It does not suit you at all. So tell me, what will it take to make you smile. Should I hold my ears?”

Anokhi shook her head in the negative.

“Then should I tickle you?” Saying this Shaurya extended his hands towards her.

“Nooo….please. I get tickled easily.” Anokhi stood up to avoid his hands.

“Ok, fine. Then you suggest something.”

Anokhi looked around. Suddenly, her eyes fixated on something and she pointed towards it. “I want to get on that.”

Shaurya looked in the direction of her finger. It was a seesaw.

“So what are you waiting for? Go ahead.”

“I cannot ride that alone. I need a partner.” Anokhi said.

“Partner. Who, me? No way. I cannot get on that. Is it my age to ride seesaws? What will people say?” Shaurya said, doubtfully.

“I have read somewhere, Life is too short to think about what people will say.”

“I think you made that up.” Shaurya said, looking at her suspiciously.

“Doesn’t matter.” Anokhi then held his hand and said, “Come partner.”

“This is so much fun”, Anokhi laughed as she went up.

“I don’t see any fun. You are up and I am still down. You should have looked for a lighter partner.” Shaurya said from below.

“I should have sure got a light hearted one. But I am unfortunately stuck with you who needs to be taught even how to have fun. Now do as I say. Push the ground with your feet.”

Shaurya followed her instructions.

“Wow, this is fun indeed.”

“Now that your cover has been blown, how are you going to stop the divorce?” Anokhi asked, going up.

“You asked me to follow the direct route. So I told them that I don’t want the divorce. Now let us see what they are going to do about this. Can we go on the swing next?”

“Oh no...the tiger cub has tasted blood.” Anokhi said, in mock alarm.

“I have not seen Shaurya so happy in years.” Shaan remarked, seeing him on the seesaw.

“Yes, he is an altogether different person around Anokhi. Did you notice how protective he is of her?” Aastha asked.

“I noticed one more thing. He does not want us to separate. Even if it means losing funds for his dream project.” Shaan said.

“Yes, but you just now said that Devi Bhabhi is going to throw Kanchan and Gayatri out if we don’t go through with this.”

“I know, but I really wish there was a way out of this. Devi Bhabi cannot always have her way by manipulating others.”

“You are right. She needs to learn a lesson. I think I know what to do.” Aastha said, as if thinking something.

“What is cooking in your mind?” Shaan asked with curiosity.

“I will tell you only if you promise to help me.” Aastha said, extending her palm towards him.

Shaan placed his hand over it and said, “Promise. I could not stand by your side 25 years ago, and it destroyed three lives. I won’t repeat the same mistake again.”

Aastha smiled, “Thanks. Now let us find out what is cooking between Shaurya and Anokhi.”

“I will have one rainbow gola.” Anokhi was telling the gola vendor. “What will you have Sir?” She asked Shaurya.

“Kala Khatta.”

Shaurya turned around hearing Aastha’s voice. Aastha and Shaan were coming towards them.

“That’s his favourite flavour.” Aastha said.

“No. It used to be, but not anymore. I will have an orange please.” Shaurya said, without looking at his mother.

“Don’t mind him Mam. His choices keep changing like his mood. Will you have something?” Anokhi asked Aastha.

“Thanks for asking but you both enjoy it. We have some important work to do. I came here to inform you something.” Aastha said.

Both of them looked at her curiously.

This time Shaan answered, “Shaurya, I am happy to see your concern for me, but I have thought a lot about it. We have been living apart for years. It is no use keeping this relationship just for the sake of it. Therefore we both have decided that we are going ahead with the divorce.”

Hearing this, Shaurya’s gola fell from his hand.

seesaw🤣😆 swing🤣 cant laugh anymore.
