Gayatri considered herself to be a highly intelligent person, and one, who constantly strived to learn more about everything. Her passion for photography had given her that opportunity, by allowing her to travel all over the world for her shooting assignments. She had embraced every new experience that every new place and subject offered without any bias and revelled in the new knowledge.
' Luca. A strange word, and strangely one I am hearing for the first time ' Gayatri confessed and looked at the old man who said, ' your words remind me of an old friend from whom I learnt a lot and in my opinion, was truly a remarkable old lady. I particularly remember two short sentences that are seared in my consciousness and I hope they will be of some use to you.
' What are those two lines, old man? Say it and let me decide on their usefulness.
"கற்றது கை மண் அளவு. கல்லாதது உலகளவு " the old man said, in what sounded like Tamil to Gayatri who turning to Dhana wondered if what had just been said, was Tamil.
' Dhana, I know for sure it is Tamil, because I have heard Ravi say these same words a couple of times'.
' That makes this person named Ravi, a very intelligent and learned person' the old man said and this immediately evoked a reaction from Gayatri who beaming in pride and joy declared loudly, ' That is why he is called Master sir. In fact he is a teacher and a headmaster of a small school in South India'.
' That is all very good, child. But did he ever tell you what those words meant. I am sure he must have told you the meaning '.
Confused by his words, Gayatri looked at Dhana who looked at her with his pleasant poke face expression that was just that, pleasant but that which never revealed anything of what was going on either in his head or in his heart.
' No. I cannot recollect him having explained what those words meant. I guess he did not think it was very important that I know the meaning of these weird words'.
The old man's sigh was loud and its hidden meaning palpable in its intensity as it left his thoughts.
' The reason that Ravi did not explain what this ancient proverb means that either he deliberately avoided telling you its meaning or did not do so in fear of hurting you or offending you, litle one'.
Confused by the old man's bold declaration, Gayatri looked at him and askked tentatively, ' hurt or offend me? Why? Why would Ravi do that? ' and finally coming to her senses, asked the old man what was the meaning of the tamil words he had just spoken.
The old man nodded and whispered, ' Better late than never' and proceeded to translate what he had said in Tamil to English.
' What we have learned is like a handful of earth; What we have yet to learn is like the whole world '.
Then just like that, Gayatri smiled and taking the Old master's hands in hers gently kissed them and pleaded with him, breaking the impasse that had descended upon the four of them.
' Old master, please forgive me. I am not an arrogant person. It's just that I speak my mind without inhibition and also, through wrong choices of words come across as a rude and obnoxious person. I am not that. I am not. But now, I think I am finally beginning to realise that, even the much praised virtues, such as being frank, honest and outspoken, are in their own ways, a form of arrogance and bad behaviour.'
On cue, both Dhana and Tara stepping forward flanked her protectively on both sides and told the Old master of Azhagan that the very flaws that Gayatri thought were a form of arrogance were what made her such an incredible and unique person'.
The old man smiled and said, ' I know that and so does he and yet, he sent me to talk to her and also convince her that she had nothing to worry about herself and the new lives that she carries in her womb'.
A look of alarm filled Gayatri's face as she stood absorbing what she had just heard and looked at all three of them with unease and asked, ' Am I or my babies in danger because of my reckless words?'
Turning to the old man, ' Are you here to test me in some way? What if I fail? What happens then?' and grabbing Dhana's arm, ' My lord, my friend, I am not sure what is going on with all of you? I am not used to your ancient and alien ways of life'.
No sooner had she spoken, the old master did something strange and scary that threatened to push Gayatri over the edge and into total panic.
The old man raising his right hand, flicked his fingers and said, ' Peace be upon you, child. Let light be your constant and let it shine brightly through your purpose ' in a way that people say their most sacred prayers, and the very next moment, Gayatri real felt a strange sense of bliss and peace fill her soul and drive away all her doubts and fears
' The word LUCA means Last universal common ancestor. But before that there was supposedly FUCA, The first universal common ancestor ' and waving his hand, ' All this techincal jargon is for nerds and not for us folk. I like all of you think that a simple answer is the most relevant and beautiful answer.
That said, LUCA, The last universal common ancestor is the hypothesized common ancestral cell from which the three domains of life, the Bacteria, the Archaea, and the Eukarya originated. The cell possessed the genetic code and ribosomes which translated from DNA or RNA to proteins. The LUCA probably existed at latest 3.6 billion years ago, and possibly as early as 4.3 billion years ago'.
Dhana had seen a lot in his 42 years of existence and pretty much nothing ever surprised him but this information left his head reeling and spinning with a million questions. He was a regular supercomputer and like his kind, knew almost all that was needed to know when it came to the subject of Knowledge and yet this piece of information sent his brain into overdrive mode.
Staring hard at the wise old master, Dhana asked him what he really meant by using the word LUCA and then Gayatri joined in by asking her own set of questions.
' Yes, Dhana. Your instincts and thoughts are the same as mine. There is a valid reason why our wise old friend has broached the term Luca and that too at this point in time.
With a smile that indicated his approval and the pride he felt about them, the old man began to speak and finally answered the seemingly unanswerable question that left them stupefied and awed at the same time.
' LUCA might mean the last universal common ancestor to earth bound scientists but not us, children. The reason for that is Azhagan himself!'
' By that you mean to say that Azhagan's alien ancestors were the ones behind how life began on this planet. Our planet earth?' Dhana asked the old man who smiled and then closing his eyes stood still for a moment and then opening it, said, ' There were no ancestors for Azhagan.'
Gayatri's forhead furrowed deeply as she tried to make sense of what the old man's words and asked tentatively, ' So, who or what is Azhagan? Who were his parents or to be more exact, who created him?'
' Azhagan was born to Avini but what is inside his body is beyond my understanding. I used the word LUCA, last universal common ancestor deliberately. As far as our anthropologists and other scientists are concerned, universal ancestor means the first origins of life on this planet.
But as far as I am concerned, the word Universal means just that, and literally means the Universe and the cosmos in its entirety.
' What do you mean by that, by using the word, Cosmos?' Gayatri asked confusedly and looked at Dhana who looked as confused as her and then appearing to compose himself, asked his own question.
' Old master, wise one, how old is Azhagan and by that I mean the forces that lie inside him?'
The old man smiled, ' Good question and the answer to that is.... older than the Universe and this Cosmos that we know.'
