After delivering a hit in his 50th film, Ajith is busy shooting for his next offering, Billa 2, with Chakri Toleti. As reported earlier, the team is ready to start their next schedule in Goa from October but the question now seems to be about the leading ladies. A little birdie tells us that Huma Qureshi, one of the female leads in the film signed on for the project, is unlikely to be part of the schedule as she is being replaced.

A source says, "The first schedule of the film was shot in a studio in Hyderabad with Ajith and the villains. It was in the next schedule in Goa that the two female leads — Bruna Abdullah and Huma Qureshi — were supposed to join him. However, there seems to be some confusion as Huma is not likely to be part of the project. The team is conducting auditions now to find a replacement for her." The success of Ajith's recent release could have initiated changes to the cast and script to ensure that his forthcoming release exceeds expectations.

When we contacted producer Suresh Balajee, he said, "Things are still under consideration. Shooting is going as per schedule. We just returned from Goa after finalising the locations and we are likely to start shooting from October 19. We are making certain changes to the characters and only after two days will we be able to confirm the final cast. As of now, Bruna and Huma are still part of the project."

'Thala'( short for thalaiva) Ajit is an enigma. He shuns the spotlight after shooting unlike others who seek it all the time. He seldom gives interviews and you will never find him sharing the podium with all and sundry for innocuous causes or at incongruous awards functions. He calls a spade a spade and at a rare do he attended, Rajni stood up and applauded when Ajit requested political parties not to force stars to attend gatherings that don't involve them. His ascendance to superstardom has been studied and gradual. His earlier films show that he was not keen on the number games but wanted to do a variety of roles. For me "Vaalee" first showcased his talent in a double role. He was riveting in the role of the mute twin who lusts for his sister-in-law. "Mugavaree" was another film in which his performance was poignant. I think it was with 'Dheena' that he was accepted as an action hero and fans found it fit to form ' mandrams'(clubs). There followed a confused phase when Ajit seemed to sign all the wrong films like 'Red', 'Citizen' and 'Jana' just to name a few. It's remarkable that even after a slew of box-office turkeys, fans faith in their 'Thala' was unshaken. The initial box-office collections of 'Mangatha' aided by the extra long festive weekend has taken the film industry by storm. That it has sustained after the holidays shows that the film will be one of the biggest grosser ever.

Ajit rocks in the film and is solely responsible for its success which also happens to be his fiftieth. He's the hero but plays a suspended cop who's after a huge cache of betting money which is in the safe keep of a local don. Ajit has to be lauded for playing the role with a panache unseen on the Indian screen especially for a hero. Even Kamal has not dared to sport grey hair when not portraying multiple roles. The George Clooney look suits him and none of his fans have protested. Ajit drinks, smokes, cheats on his girlfriend and even dumps her in his pursuit of pelf.

In fact, Arjun Sarja is the hero because he plays the good cop. Well, the credit for the film's success goes entirely to Ajit simply because the film is mediocre. Director Venkat Prabhu has been busy watching DVDs involving heist and betrayal. He fills the screen with his cronies who are regulars in all his films. Ajit's overpowering presence simply dwarfs all the other characters in the film.

In fact a much better film along similar lines is the recently released 'Aranya Kandam' which flopped but is now being hailed as a classic. Ironically Ajit was so impressed with the film that he's supposed to have met the director Thiagarajan a few times. Let's hope something exciting emerges.

Never one to shy away from unconventional roles Ajit is emerging to be the enviable amalgam of Rajni and Kamal which is the dream of every Tamil star.

Ajith's unflagging enthusiasm, backed by persistence, has seen him through all the lows in life, so when success comes calling in the form of Mankatha, his 50th film, he is not duly affected as he has put in the same effort for all his projects.
The Hyderabad-born actor is confident that Gambler, the dubbed version, which released this Friday will equally entertain movie lovers in Andhra Pradesh. In Gambler, he plays an anti-hero. One has seen him either as a cop or a don numerous times but Ajith says he has experimented with various genres all along. "All my cop/gangster dramas have been spaced out but somewhere the films in which I played the bad guy were extremely successful, so people are under the impression that I play only such roles. I call it selective amnesia."
Script is the hero
Not many top heroes would agree to go grey, Ajith's salt and pepper look and his willingness to submit to the script unconditionally has won him encomiums; yet he isn't willing to take the credit.
The modest actor says that the script is the hero. "Any artiste in my place, be it in Mumbai or Andhra Pradesh would have grabbed it, it's that exciting. I had an uncanny feeling that it would work big time while it was being made and even before the release I mentioned this to my director Venkat Prabhu and my wife. It was an emotional roller coaster ride but all's well that ends well. Arjun was very magnanimous, he agreed to do the role at the last minute, Nagarjuna was supposed to do it but he had date problems. The boys and the heroines, all of them have carried me on their shoulders."
Ajith's Billa 2, a prequel to Billa is currently in progress. He explains the latest version shows the rise of the underworld don. He adds, "It shows how David became Billa, it was a collective idea and when Billa was released, critics and others panned it as a fashion show. Right now the negotiations are on with my next project, in three weeks it will be made official."
The actor has a huge fan base but it surprised many when he disbanded his fan club. He cites the reasons,
"Just as they wish well for me I too want them to think and live well and prioritise their lives. Let them fend for roti, kapda and makaan first, we don't need fan clubs. I'm aware of their unconditional love and they need not prove it to the world. I want them to just take the good things from my cinema. There is also an unholy nexus between cinema and politics. All fans need is a good cinema, I don't want fans taking a stance and using my name, they have a free hand to support a political party and I too don't make my preferences public. About fans running films for 100 days - even God can't save a bad film, I'm happy they were with me through my worst crisis."
Health is the greatest gift, contentment the greatest wealth, faithfulness the best relationship.

The actor has it all and is full of gratitude.

When he isn't doing films, Ajith is a race driver and his wife Shalini turned a badminton player at the state level. So ask him if his daughter Anoushka is showing an interest in sport or drama and he remarks;

"I wish she grows up to be a simple and a sensible woman. I don't want 100 films, I just want a happy ending."

Mankatha's success has led to a buzz in tinsel town that two of its members might pair up again. According to the grapevine, Ajith might team up with Venkat Prabhu once again for a film, which is going to be produced by A.M. Ratnam, who is currently on a long hia tus. Sources say that Ajith is extremely pleased with Mankatha and its B-O performance and hence has agreed to allot dates to Venkat Prabhu once he finishes Billa 2. When Venkat Prabhu was contacted, all the filmmaker said was that it was too early to talk about the project, "Talks have been initiated. I have few of my earlier commitments which I want to honour first." The director also tonsured his head at Tirupathi after Mankatha's success.
