And i guess we have to be thankful to these people who persisted . I see people who have bcome full time activists after the reservation protest . and you are telling about people who took action after RDB ... so guess we need more such impactful shows movies incidences and what we really really need is Leadership like Anna Hazare .. how many role models do we have ...in this world anyway .

I would also like to point out there are few role models out there because media highlight aishwaryas weight gain more than it does people who are real life heros .

Mother Teresa, Vinoba Bhave or Baba Amte did not need media to highlight their activities. They carried on with their Karm irrespective of whether there was applause or brick-bats.

None of the freedom fighters had the media highlighting their thoughts and activities. They had to resort to underground publications to spread their message. Gandhi's voice was so feeble that the person sitting next to him had to strain himself to hear him, yet his voice and message carries on to this day.

Activism is one way of correcting social wrongs. But awareness in daily lives, and impact on a common man's life would happen only when the awareness seeps down to the densest of consciousness.

Case in point, everyone knows that use of plastics is bad for the environment, but people wait till the ban is imposed by the govt. and penalties imposed and stringent checking done - before they stop using plastic bags. Till such time that there are no penalties and strict checking against plastic bags no one gives it up and once the checks come, miraculously people find alternate ways overnight.

@mitzification

Sorry...I don't live in the US :)

@Chitrashi...to see you mention Mother Theresa as an example...is kind of making me want to read up more on her...and maybe my view that she wasn't so great may change...

But one of the latest things I saw on her was this video:

Well I for one have never been a great fan of Mother Teresa - I think she's a fanatic Catholic and those stories of her withholding aid to the poor till they agreed to convert are unfortunately all too true. However, that does not take away from the fact that when No One was paying attention to the poor, the sick, the homeless, the destitute and the aged - she was the one who held out a helping hand. She took notice of them and dedicated her life to living with them. If our society had not created so many of the helpless and then ignored them and left them to die there wouldn't have been a need for her.

I know personally that I can't take in my arms a child as sick and malnourished and probably also stinking of decay and dirt as she served all her life, so who am I to question her motives? If I or my society was doing something for the child, I would have the right to cast aspersions.

@all- interesting discussions. As nirvan says i too watch this program with my mom. She used to tell i cannot get up from my chair. She neither praised Ak nor scolded me for watching this very much glued to the seat. This program is no wonder reached great heights, it is a mere mirror of people which expose our strength and weakness. Let me bring in one lively example Several people do scold Anna Hazare for fasting every now and then. My brother used to criticise him by saying that he will eat unlimited meals behind the camera. As south comedy VIVEK says people are short minded. Last but not least Annika you deserve to be the viewbie or any kinda DT member for this forum:-) for your posts:-)

But they said all she did was create that house for the dying...not offer them any medications...because suffering was the best way to meet GOD...and yet, when she was sick...she went abroad for her treatment. So...she made a building where dying people could come and die while they suffered? All she did was convert their religion so their souls would be saved?

I don't know.Guess she died before I started reading up on her and in what circumstances she did everything. But I don't think I can ever respect her.

Like me and my Gandhi ambivalence. Mother Teresa is another person I'm not so sure about. What she did I respect, her motivations not so much. Her canonization not at all.
