Watching the episode today, I was quite indignant that Hindu scriptures do not say something so horrifying; only to be corrected by my Mom. Apparently Manusmriti does have rigid definitions for caste and how people in different castes ought to be treated. Considering that, that was her thesis - had to take her word for it without dispute.

Felt glad that I gave up practicing religion in my teenage.

Chitrashi, the pandit did refer to the teachings of Manu where it was said that shudras came from feet etc etc etc.. Horrifying. Even a christian official was advocating about the caste division.

I feel the Dalits are far more sophisticated when compared to Bhramins like those. They clean shit but their minds are still so decent that they dont indulge in these shit talks.

@Chitrashi

You are not aware of Manusmriti?😲 You should try and read about it.

@nirvanlove

Let's not get into counter-stereotyping here. I have seen certain Dalits using their caste to play victim and demand special treatment too.

People are good or bad as individuals not as a group and certainly not as a caste or religion or race.

Yes the Sikh history stories are there about the Guru making even the Mughal Emperor sit down with everyone else and eat langar - same food cooked for everyone else.

The Gurus also used to do their own work themselves. From tending to the fields to cleaning the langar area or repairing the broken roof of their homes.

Sadly, so-called followers of religion only turned out to be ones who ''know the stories'', ''have heard or read them everywhere'' BUT do not follow it at all.

When I question my relatives on this discrepancy in our actions and in things we are supposed to learn from saints, they give excuses that ''Gurus did what they did because they were not ordinary like us, they were mahapurush, mahaan aatma and we are ordinary people who give in to society.''

Then give lame statements like ''we are part of society, we have to live in it..or whatever that is happening is result of kalyug!''😲

Easily make excuse to justify your action by saying you're not a Guru or enlightened soul or that you're helpless since you're only flowing with ''society'' or deny your own responsibility and blame it all on times we are living in!🐷

OMG YES!!!! Finally!! I found someone who got the same replies! HI5! 😆

@Chitrashi

I've read "about" Manusmriti, I haven't read the text or even a translation or anything. Tough not to be aware of it for me - my mother did her Ph.D in it - Comparison of Geeta, Bible and Manusmriti.

My encounter with caste was rather late in life, though in hind sight, I remember thinking my parents behaved appallingly with all the help-I put it down to a class rather than CASTE divide. My dadi hammered into our uncomprehending heads how blessed we were to be born Jat Sikhs.She was considered a bit batty by our parents so we learned to turn a deaf ears to her rants- which were mostly aimed at my mother who wasn't a Jat Sikh! I remember my mother's exasperated retort one time,"Rabb ne jedhe phooman lai Jattan nu,teh kadi lahey nahin?" ( "The pompoms God decorated Jats with-he never took them off?")

Anyways,my younger sister married her school sweet heart amid much fun fare and some confusion.Two days later she came home in tears saying she could NOT live in THAT house! WHY? They are kattar brahmins,don't allow harijans to enter the house so the house is dirty and the bathrooms filthy.She was given jhadoos,pochas and enough disinfectants to drown Maharani Bagh in and dispatched back to her sasural.

Then came a round of negotiations between the two set of parents-held in my home-seen as a neutral venue! I noticed that my sister's MIL would not eat or drink in my house-came armed with her own chandi ka glass & a bottle of water(presumably from the tap in her filthy kitchen!) She said her dharam would be brasht if she even drank from the house of a meat eater.I declared the peace negotiations ended and threw the whole lot out of my house.She never did eat at our home-though she does it in my sistr's house-though even beef is cooked & consumed in that house-she doesn't know...so I guess her daram is intact!

BTW=Solution for Maharani Bagh? They broke a wall & a built a door INTO the bathroom so that the cleaning lady to clean the bathroom WITHOUT entering the house-the rest revelled in their dirty but caste perfect house and still do! Why don't they clean the house themselves-yeh hamari jaat ka kaam nahin hain! So they live a pure caste life in squalid surroundings!

I would hear relatives and neighbours bash ''choode'' or ''chamaar'', hint at their supposed lack of intellect. In fact, ''choodi/chooda'' are used almost as gaalis/cuss words.

At primary school itself, my classmates would ask me, ''Tum kya ho?''. I'd get puzzled and thinking they were asking about religion, I'd tell them my religion. But then they'd say, ''Nahi woh nahi. Tumhari caste kya hai?''

Caste was discussed a lot both by teachers and students. Even when they'd hear a surname, they'd dissect and discuss whether it was high caste, low caste or what!

My dada ji was particular about caste. Always speculating about caste of a person from his looks or behaviour or name!

Untouchability was not practised in our homes or school. But insults, name calling and stereotyping the community was widely prevalent.

People still think of lower castes as ''brainless'', ''rude'' or ''freeloaders'' - who get jobs and admissions through reservations.

You're talking about Dalits? Even so-called ''highest castes'' look down upon ''middle level caste'' (!) and talk disdainfully about them. 😡

The oddest thing I have seen is that other religions did not really have any caste system, but even they practise it in a big way - flouting basic tenets of their religion. No wonder we have ''Sikh Dalits'', ''Christian Dalits'' etc.!😲

Looks like we just needed excuse to discriminate against our own people!

Well from my own experience I could tell that it happens even when you start working in a office... people do ask your surname & try to dissect the cast... how true... even people of middle level of hierarchy suffer such discrimination & one can guess what kind of torture Dalits have to undergo.

I was in a world where caste discrimination was a word from alien world .. it was after my 12th when I was going to apply for collage one thing made me aware of this... "Reservation" for SC caste .. I could see how ppl less deserving getting the opportunity before me... n the thing was from whom ds reservation is the Needy class is not getting it but some ppl who has the surname of a SC using it.. some of them belong to reach family, some of their father is a officer in Gov office .. 2nd shock I got when one of my friends started trying for gov service .. for every form a general candidate should give 100/- n for sc/st its free ... d way it's going CASTE DISCRIMINATION will take another shape but it wont be removed from our country.. one side their is this Dalit system, one side some political leaders are banking upon it and in another side normal people who belongs to General category who were least bothered by ds caste system, now getting victimised by different kindda discrimination ... any way its a complicated thing

FOR ME I JUST WANT EQUILIBRIUM IN INDIA.. NEITHER OUR RELIGION N NOR OUR CONSTITUTION LET US REMEMBER OUR CASTE AGAIN N AGAIN

Well if you are talking about fake documents then even fake degrees are also sold in various states... don't people fake their educational qualifications... I'm sure you are not aware of the government process involved in getting such a certificate.
