UNDER THE SKY LANTERNS - PART 29

BHARADWAJ HOUSE - THE NEXT NIGHT
SIDDHANT: (narration) Very soon, my whereabouts reached Desai's ears. Under his instructions, my parents decided to take me back the next day.
Young Siddhant watches his parents in horror as they sit around in the living room and discuss about Desai's phone call.
Mataji notices the petrified look in her grandson's eyes.
SIDDHANT: (narration) I was terrified. Very-very terrified.
Siddhant is startled as he feels a gentle hand on his shoulder. He turns around and gets teary as he sees Mataji towering over him.
MATAJI: Siddhant beta, is there something you wish to tell me?
Siddhant falls at his grandmother's feet and bursts into a quiet sob. He wraps his arms around her legs and literally begs.
SIDDHANT: (cries) I don't want to go back. Please don't let them take me...
Mataji is lost for words. She gently pulls him onto his feet.
MATAJI: Why? What's wrong?
SIDDHANT: They-they will-will kill me... Don't let them take me back. If I go back... sir will surely kill me!
Mataji is deeply worried at his frantic outburst.
MATAJI: No beta. Don't worry. (hugs him again and comforts him) You're safe. Mataji is there na for you?
SIDDHANT'S ROOM - THE SAME NIGHT
Siddhant is fast asleep and curled up into a tight ball under his blanket.
The room is engulfed in darkness. A faint gleam of moonlight streams in through the open windows and adds to the overwhelming eeriness.
The door knob squeaks quietly as it opens and a shady figure slips in.
Siddhant stirs in his sleep. He becomes increasingly aware of the presence of an unwelcoming guest in his room.
The shady figure, a thin frail man, closes in on Siddhant.
A bone chilling breeze flutters the curtains apart as it makes its way in through the window.
Siddhant wakes up with a start as if in a violent nightmare.
His eyes are wide with fear as he sees the frail man really close to his bed.
The man's thick, white moustache looks ghostly. His red, bulging eyes are terrifying.
Siddhant sits up quickly and backs up into the wall; half hoping that he could disappear into it.
SIDDHANT: (tries to scream, but all what comes out is a hoarse whisper) Papa... Maa...
The man gets closer, his face more and more vivid with each step. It's Desai, Siddhant's vicious warden.
DESAI: (growls) Did you really think that you could run away?
SIDDHANT: No... no...
Desai slowly removes his belt.
Siddhant backs up into a corner of his bed. He is drenched in his own sweat.
DESAI: You wretched coward!
SIDDHANT: No"Mataji"save me!!
Desai raises his belt with a blood curdling scream.
Siddhant is frightened out of his wits. He desperately tries to get away from the monster. But the high pitched scream is too terrifying!
Desai's banshee-like scream shakes the entire foundation of Bharadwaj house.
Out of the blue, Rajendar, Sujata and Mataji rush into his room. They don't see Desai.
Siddhant's parents pull him into their embrace.
RAJENDAR: Beta, what happened?
But Siddhant just looks at Desai and screams like a slaughter goat.
SUJATA: What happened Siddhant?
Mataji stands and watches on, stunned.
SIDDHANT: (screams) HELP!!! DON'T LET HIM"I WON'T GO - I WON'T GO - I WON'T GOOO!!!
Rajendar and Sujata are confused. They try to follow Siddhant's gaze but see nothing.
MATAJI: (to Rajendar and Sujata) He's just having a nightmare.
Mataji steps in and cuddles Siddhant in her comforting arms.
MATAJI: No beta. No one will take you away. I won't let them. We're all here for you.
Her words and gently strokes to his back comfort him a little. Slowly, he calms down and drifts off to sleep in her arms.
Rajendar and Sujata are very disturbed.
Mataji steps out a while later.
MATAJI: I need to talk to you people.
They settle down in the living room with a grim expression on all their faces.
MATAJI: Rajendar beta, first thing tomorrow, I want you to get Siddhant transferred from that school and hostel. We're not going to send him there anymore.
RAJENDAR: But Mataji"
MATAJI: (gestures to stop) He can stay here with me and go to the nearest school. True, it may not be that classy, but that's perfectly fine.
Rajendar looks lost at Mataji's instructions.
SIDDHANT: (narration) Papa had no choice but to listen. Finally, I was taken away from there...
Months later, we see a happy Siddhant being dressed up for school by Mataji.
SIDDHANT: (narration) ... for good.
END OF FLASHBACK SCENE
BACK TO PRESENT TIME - IN CHING'S RESTAURANT
Roli is lost in Siddhant's haunting past. Her heart goes out to him.
On the other hand, Siddhant quickly looks away as tears begin to sting in his eyes. He covers it up with a fake smile. A drop threatens to fall but he quickly flicks it away.
His pain equally stings Roli. He's irritating in an adorable sort of way, but seeing him in this state worries her.
ROLI: Are you alright?
SIDDHANT: (nods) Yep.
ROLI: I'm sorry. I just wanted you to let it out.
SIDDHANT: (smiles) No. It's okay. I'm fine.
He crumples up a paper napkin in the attempt to distract himself.
SIDDHANT: Ermm... I think we're getting late. We have to move.
He prepares to get up but Roli reaches out and holds his hand gently.
Her sudden touch startles him.
The warmth and energy from her fingers flow into his skin and burn him.
He struggles to look into her eyes, but when he does, it sends a huge surge of electricity pulsing through him. The flaming fire in her eyes almost consumes his entire being.
ROLI: Not yet...
