"This is the most beautiful gift that somebody has ever gifted me…"
"And what are you gifting me on our engagement?". Had asked Saras with mischief in his eyes.
Sitting in front of the mirror, all decked up, Kumud was smiling to herself, her thought occupied by the man who was going to be betrothed to her officially in a couple of minutes. It was their engagement ceremony!! Engagement? A formal agreement for future marriage? What is an engagement ceremony for her when she was already his in her mind and heart?
Yes she belonged to him, her Saraswatichandra! She sighed and stood up to go downstairs where he was waiting for her with all the family.
Kumud knew as soon as she has set her feet in the hall that he was somewhere around. She could feel that he was staring at her but …where was he? Why was he playing hide and seek on their engagement day? What is he up to now? Was he upset because she has refused to meet him before the engagement?
Kumud was right. Saras was looking or would it be more appropriate to say, staring at her, away from all. He was sure he had forgotten to breathe because as soon as he had seen her climbing down the stairs, swaying her hips graciously, her anklets chiming with every step she took, he practically found himself gasping for air…she was looking like a real princess, his princess!! She was beautiful with her radiant face, glistened eyes and her lips like cherry wine inviting him to kiss her senseless…
He wanted to rob her, his precious and priceless jewel, right away from everyone and... to hide and treasure her in his arms. It was really difficult for him to control his senses around her and he knew what a Herculean task it was for him to stay away from her and still preserve his sanity. She was mesmerizing to watch. He tracked her across the room, watching as she smiled and greeted many of the guests but her eyes still searching for him. He derived great pleasure teasing her and he so wanted to be naughty with her right now!!
Kumud's eyes were still roaming around in search of him when she found her hand being yanked by someone from behind into one dark room of the haveli. With the over powering force, she came colliding onto the chest of the man himself … the man whom she would recognize by his scent and warmth among a million. "Whattt…?
She found herself being shushed by him, his lips touching her ears and sending sparks all over her. He whispered – "Were you looking for me?"
Kumud felt a blush crawl up her skin and flood her cheeks. Thank God they were in the dark and he won't notice thus sparing her the acute embarrassment... But his next words disconcerted her. "You look even more beautiful when you blush like this!!" She replied stubbornly:
- I am not blushing. And why are you not switching on the light?
- Are you sure you want that?
Kumud closed her eyes as his words seeped in. Why does he have to speak so softly and huskily? She has been struggling to keep a safe distance between them to avoid any more complications and here he was, teasing her, creating havoc to her senses… "What do you mean?' She stuttered.
He replied naughtily with a chuckle: "well everybody is saying I am looking like a prince, a very handsome…" As he expected Kumud cut in and replied with equal naughtiness: "well everybody is surely blind."
She found herself being dragged by him to the window, both bathing in the moonlight and their eyes finally met. He was right. It was a bad idea to have him so close… and no darkness to hide her bare soul which was reflecting in her eyes. And with his intense and hooded gaze on her… The same eyes which captivated her in his dreams, the eyes which stirred her inside out and made her love for him unleashed, the eyes which had the power to tickle and melt her and… undone her like they were doing right now.
His gaze remained unwaveringly on her and though she wanted to turn away from him, she couldn't. His hand caressed her chin and forced her to look at him turning her completely powerless. His lips touched hers; making her shiver and she clutched her saree to control her raging emotions. His hands slowly shifted from her face to the back of her neck to draw her lips closer to deepen the kiss and… finally she surrendered. Glided her hand from her chest to the nape of his neck, she contributed in the passionate kiss.
When they finally pulled away, Saras leaned his forehead to hers, his gaze never leaving hers, he said softly: This is the most priceless gift you could give me on our engagement day!!
Her cheeks turned a deep red and in between a rushed breathing she exclaimed: Everybody is waiting for us!!
And Kumud ran away from there in a flash of blue and beige as he smiled tenderly completely in parts n his heart threatening to burst with so much love.
