In my PoV, I think rejected Kumud thinking she'd be the regular girl AND he doesn't trust his father. I think it all boils down to trust. He doesn't want to obey his father in this case as he loved/loves his mom whereas his father had always been disconnected.

Hmmm...interesting. Thanks. So just to be clear, he's never actually said exactly why though, right? It's still up to interpretations, right?

I feel he said no because he doesn't like his life being planned for him. Also, any bachelor would feel that his freedom is coming to an end when he thinks of marriage and settling down.

And then there's the fact the his father/step-mom found the girl, w/o his knowledge, let alone consent.

And of course, the fact that it was announced, not even discussed in private, to a large audience, that Saras would marry.

So a bunch of reasons, all playing with ego, pride, trust, family politics, old hurts, new hurts, etc.

I also see a caring, yet careless father, in his dad. He cares, but he also can't be bothered to care.

So sometimes I feel Saras rebels a bit, partially for attention, partially banging against the promise he gave his mom that he is too honorable to break.

I felt that way by the way his face fell when his father said 'change!'. His expressions before and after spoke volumes. Just that one scene for me described the father son relationship very well. they care, each does for sure. But they distrust and are wary of each other.
