Thanks Bennu! I think I've said this before, but what's a wedding without any drama? 😆
And of course only after the darkest of nights can the dawn emerge.
Keep reading and I hope I won't disappoint.

I'm just on cloud nine realizing that this FF has more than 25000 views and that it's reached 100 pages! I never expected to reach these milestones when I first got the idea for this story.

A huge THANK YOU to each and every person who reads (all those silent readers too 😛), likes, and comments on this story. It really means so much to have an audience to share my writing with. I just love Rabir and that's why I started writing. The product that has come out from my imagination surprises me sometimes too.

Thank you all so much from the bottom of my heart for reading. 😃

Scroll down for chapter 43.

Chapter 43:

Karan stopped the car right outside the Garg house. Kabir was ready to jump out of the car before it even came to a full stop, but Karan held his brother's hand firmly.

"Bhai, I know it's important for you to be here, but...I mean it's not that I don't want to be here for bhabhi, but...don't get me wrong bhai. I just..."

"Karan let me go!"

"Bhai, you stay here with bhabhi...and...I...I'll go to the address myself."

Karan closed his eyes, waiting for his brother's angry outburst. Hearing nothing, Karan opened one of his eyes to find that Kabir was already opening the door of the car.

"Just do whatever you want Karan; nothing is more important for me right now than Rachna."

Kabir ran into the house, while Karan drove off on his own.

---------------------

Kabir ran up the stairs quickly and found both Sneha and Gunjan standing in front of Rachna's room, knocking on her door, pleading for her to open it.

"Sneha mausi? Gunjan? What happened? Rachna was fine when she left this morning so why..."

"Seema aunty found out about everything jiju. She left the house with everyone else, even after Rachna di talked to her. Mom also tried to reason with her but she didn't want to hear anything."

Sneha continued to knock on the door, tears streaming down her face.

"Rachna beta! Beta please open the door. Talk to me Rachna! What did Seema ji say to you that's made you so upset? Open the door Rachna!"

Kabir held Sneha's hand and gave a reassuring nod to her. "Let me try talking to her."

He softly knocked on the door. "Rachna, please just open the door. If you don't feel like talking to anyone that's fine, but please just open the door for us."

After a few more tries from both Kabir and Sneha, Rachna's door remained locked.

"Kabir beta, I hope Rachna hasn't don..."

Sneha broke down in a fresh set of tears at the horror of the meaning behind her incomplete, unspoken thought. Kabir placed his arm around Sneha's shoulder. "No Sneha mausi, don't think like that. Rachna would never do anything of the sort."

As much as Kabir wanted to say these words with conviction, the cracking of his voice revealed his hidden fears that mirrored Sneha's. He thrust his shoulder against the door forcefully, trying to break it open. A few more thumps against the wood and the door opened with a sudden clatter. Kabir rushed inside, with Sneha and Gunjan following closely behind. They were relieved to see her lying diagonally across the bed unharmed, staring at the wall aimlessly, completely unaware of her surroundings. Seeing her shaking with involuntary sobs, Kabir immediately dashed to her side and sat on the bed next to her, placing a hand on her shoulder. She looked startled to see him, as though she had been oblivious to everything around her up until that point. She sat up in bed and wiped the tears from her face, looking confused by his presence.

"Kabir, you're here?"

Kabir caressed her cheek and pulled Rachna into an embrace. She snuggled into his arms and closed her eyes. He continued to slide his hand through her hair and across her back to comfort her, while she just held onto him dearly and squeezed her arms around his body tightly, whispering and mumbling the same phrase into his ear repeatedly.

"I don't want this. I don't want this. I don't want this. I don't want this..."

It was only the sixth or seventh time that she had repeated the phrase did Kabir make out the words well enough to understand them. He turned his face towards Rachna's, while she remained tangled in his arms, and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead before he spoke into her ear softly.

"What is it sweetheart? What is it that you don't want?"

Rachna broke the hug and kept her eyes closed, squeezing them to stop the tears from flowing out. She took a deep breath and looked into Kabir's eyes as she answered his question, an indescribable pain and emptiness in her voice.

"I don't want all this. I don't want any of this. This whole lavish wedding. Renewing our vows. Announcing our marriage to the world. I just don't care. I don't want to know who did mummy and papa's accident. Or why Gayatri tried to get us divorced. Or why your father has been hiding from you and Karan. I just don't care anymore. All I want is peace in my life. I just want my tiny little world of happiness back. The one where it's just you, me, and us together. That's it."

Emphasizing the last two words of her outburst, Rachna got up off the bed and walked out of the room, avoiding the surprised and dazed looks from Sneha and Gunjan. Kabir remained sitting on the bed, in serious thought of Rachna's words. His eyes briefly met with Sneha's and she gave him an apologetic look, which he turned his face away from.

-----------------------

Karan double checked the address on the slip of paper and looked at the building in front of him; it was indeed a nursing home, as Google maps had indicated to him during his search that morning. He stepped out of the car and entered the building. While walking up to the empty reception desk, he caught a glimpse of Pathak heading left into one of the hallways. Seeing no one around to stop him, Karan cautiously followed behind Pathak, keeping a safe distance of a few meters between them. Pathak walked to the end of the hallway and turned right into the last room, making sure to securely close the door behind him. Karan peeked into the room through the small glass window in the door, but was disappointed to view the back of Pathak's profile blocking the other person in the room. He observed for a few moments, seeing Pathak move close to a desk and pull some papers out of his briefcase, and wondered who else was in the room. Finally, the lawyer moved to the far side of the room to get a glass of water, giving Karan an unobstructed view of the person that Pathak was visiting. Karan gasped as he saw his father's smiling face viewing the packet of papers that Pathak had just delivered to him.

Unable to control himself, Karan barged into the room and ran towards his father, Prakash Ujjwal Tripathi, who stood up and became shocked when he saw his youngest son appear in front of him so suddenly. Karan wrapped his arms around his father tightly and let the tears of joy stream down his face.

"Papa. I seriously can't believe it's you. Is it really you papa?"

His joy climbed to another level altogether when he heard the words of affirmation, straight from his father's mouth, in the same warm voice that he so clearly remembered from his childhood.

"Haan Karan beta."

Prakash crossed his own hands across Karan's body, pulling his son closer to himself, running his hand over every inch of his son. He stroked Karan's face affectionately with tears in his eyes, unable to say anything because of the lump building in his throat. He ran his hand across his son's broad chest and well-built arms, coming to the proud realization that his little Karu had grown up into a man. Despite the tightening of throat, Prakash managed to choke out a few audible words to his son through his tears.

"Karu, my little Karu. You've become so big."

Karan nodded head eagerly with a watery smile on his face. "Papa. Where have been all these years? I've missed you so much. What happened to you papa?"

The smile of Prakash's face faltered as he heard the words come out of his son's mouth. He slowly sank back into his chair with a saddened expression on his face. Karan sat on the floor next to the chair, resting his head on his father's lap, as he had done countless times during his childhood. Prakash ran his hand over his son's head, like he had done so often, all those years ago, to put Karan to sleep. Pathak remained standing at the opposite corner of the room, smiling as he watched the father-son duo reunite after so many years.

--------------------

Kabir walked out to the patio. He observed Rachna sitting in the grass under the tree that stood in the middle of the backyard, the tree that they had shared a kiss under on her birthday just a few weeks ago. Taking a seat on the soft ground next to her, Kabir held Rachna's hand and squeezed it affectionately. She looked into his eyes and reciprocated his actions. He noticed the same painful emotion reflected in her eyes as he had seen earlier during her outburst. He gave her another gentle kiss on her forehead, letting his lips linger on her skin for a few seconds longer than necessary; she didn't move away. Their eyes met again and a wave of silent understanding passed between them, words no longer required for communication. Rachna shifted her position so she was sitting with her head resting on Kabir's shoulder while still holding his hand; her fingers twisted with his in a way that it looked as though they were meant to be just like that, like they belonged together. Kabir leaned back against the trunk of the tree and took a deep breath before he spoke thoughtfully, carefully choosing his every word.

"We could think about adopting."

Rachna's breath hitched as she heard the last of the five words. A fresh set of tears were unleashed from her eyes and they dropped off of her cheeks unobstructed, falling directly onto the back of Kabir's hand. He didn't wipe them away, neither from his hand, nor from her face, letting them fall freely. Rachna didn't say anything; she didn't have to. The pained expression with which she had looked at him twice today was enough to speak volumes about what was bothering her.
