😆 😆 😆 Chaitanya Chowdhury is a man in demand these days. After his success in Sangam and the immensely popular Zara Nachke Dikha , his popularity index has gone up many fold . Interviewer spoke to him exclusively on Sangam, the recent leap in the serial, his new looks, and his future plans . Excerpts from the interview :

Sangam recently had a leap. Tell us something about the leap and how it is going to affect your role ?

Well, thankfully it is not a leap of several decades ! It is a leap of just seven years. My character Sagar Bhatia has become much quieter after that leap. His wife - Kaveri has passed away and this has left a bad scar on Sagar's mind. Sagar's only aim and motivation in his life is his daughter who is seven years old now. His entire life revolves around her. Another change that has happened in Sagar's life is a relocation from Mumbai to Pune. Due to some problems in their business, Sagar's family has lost a lot of wealth and is no longer rich. They live like any other middle-class family and everyday Sagar has to think of how to earn his bread and give his daughter the best life has on offer.

Has your look changed?

As I said there is a leap of just seven years, so my looks will not change drastically. I have not used any white powder in my hair! In such a short span, a person's looks usually don't change much, but my dressing style will undergo a complete change. The earlier Sagar used to wear jeans and blazers always, while the new Sagar will be more into formal shirts and trousers keeping in line with his middle-class living. I will also be wearing a pair of spectacles to give that extra effect.

Do you think your fans will accept you in this new look ?

😃 😃 😃(Smiles) All I can say is this the first time I am playing an elderly character. I am very nervous and excited at the same time. I am excited because as an actor it will be a challenge for me to do justice to the role. I will be able to grow as an actor through this role. And I am nervous because I really don't know how my fans (read female fans!) will react. I wish I could know that in advance! I just want to tell my fans that I can't do the same role for many years and I will appreciate if they keep on supporting me. I promise that I won't disappoint them for sure.

What happened to Jennifer's character ?

Ganga is very much there in the show and will be in Pune teaching in a school.Ganga Sharma has been sentenced to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment for murdering an innocent villager. Even though Ganga is languishing in jail, she is content about isolating herself from Kaveri and Sagar's life. Gradually, Ganga will adjust to the dull life in jail and will start painting to take care of her boredom. After spending eight years in the jail, the court, pleased with Ganga's attitude, reduces her punishment by six years. However, Ganga does not want to leave the jail as she has no one awaiting her outside.

What about the rumours of Sangam going off air?

I am tired with answering questions pertaining to this rumour now! Let me tell you something -- Sangam is the number one show in the 7 PM slot which is unique and very tough to achieve. The 7 PM slot is early one and it's not easy to keep pace with the audience. Fox Television Studios (the producers of the show) is a very good production house and they are very focused on quality and storyline. This is something we need nowadays badly, since all the existing and new shows are going off air. We just have a few months to go for completing two years.

Any new shows coming up?

My fans have seen me in my dancing shoes in Zara Nachke Dikha and I am looking forward to a new reality show (read Jo Jeeta Wahi Dancing Star) I might take that up. I love to dance and I believe I am a confident and pretty good dancer.

I'm a very careful player
Chaitanya Chaudhary

Money. That's what drives everyone in the final analysis, whether in the glamour world of acting or the hard grind of scripting and producing. Cashin' In sits down with TV celebs to know well they handle their financial matters, and tracks their spending patterns.

Chaitanya Chaudhary, the faultless and well-groomed dude, isn't quite as laid back as he looks. Behind the casual demeanour lies a scrupulous mind that plans carefully and invests wisely.

Chaitanya who is currently seen in Sangam (Star Plus) tells us how he manages his finances.

How important is money for you?
Money is the important factor when it comes to living a good lifestyle. The luxury of life can be enjoyed by money only, thus it becomes a necessity.

Are you an impulsive buyer?
Not exactly. I'm a very careful player. I think a lot before buying anything. Especially when it comes to gadgets, I do a lot of planning. For instance, I never pick up a mobile phone casually. I guess it's because I am from a service background, and my thinking and spending is restricted. So that circumspection is inbuilt in me. And that's why I like to play it safe.

What are the investments you have made?
I have invested money in Mutual Funds, public provident funds and the Post Office. I invest in shares only when some interesting issue comes up. I have life insurance and mediclaim. I think investing in this is much safer than in shares.

Most expensive thing you have bought for yourself?
My car, a Skoda

Do you feel financially secure?
A person can never feel financially secure. Insecurities are always there but I feel in a couple of years I will be leading a happy and sound financial life.

Who handles your expenses?
Mutual funds and bonds are paid for by me whereas electricity bills, etc are taken care of by my dad.

What was your first salary? What did you do with it?
My first salary was eight thousand rupees and I gave it to my mom.

How much money do you carry everyday?
I don't carry a lot of money as I'm shooting whole day. As there is a risk of losing it I carry around five hundred bucks. Besides that I have my credit cards.

The new budget will soon be announced. Any suggestions?
The taxes keep on increasing that should not happen. TDS should also not increase and the car tax should also not be increased. It's already 11% and that's enough. Let the car lover buy some more cars.

A word of advice when investing money
It's better to play safe by investing money in mutual funds as the risk is minimum. It is more advisable to first strengthen your bonds and insurances and then opt for the share market.

He's like the sea

Chaitanya Chaudhury

Smart and charming, Chaitanya Chaudhury became an overnight sensation as Akshat in Kahiin To Hoga and then vanished from the small screen. All set to make a comeback with Sangam (starting August 20 on STAR Plus), the actor chats with t2...

After a successful debut in Kahiin To Hoga, why the disappearing act from television? I am asked this question all the time (laughs). The truth is that after my track in Kahiin To Hoga wound up, I started shooting for a serial called Ankhiyon Ke Jharokon Se, a one hour weekly series for STAR Plus which till today has not been allotted a time slot. So although I have been working all this while, I haven't been seen on screen at all.

What made you take up Sangam? I know it will sound cliched if I say that the show is different, but it really is different from the usual fare on television (laughs). The best thing about Sangam is that it has a well-etched plot and the story progresses in a definite direction. I wanted to avoid the regular saas bahu serials and when Sangam came along, I took it up. Also, the show is produced by Fox Television which is a very reputed production house.

What is your role in Sangam? Sangam is essentially a love story. I play a young man named Sagar who falls in love with a simple girl called Ganga, played by Jennifer Winget, and so the name of the serial is Sangam. My character is like the sea ' calm on most occasions, but when ruffled, he can be very stormy.

Sangam has got the experimental 7pm slot on STAR Plus. Do you think the early evening slot might hit TRPs? The channel has decided to extend its primetime hour and start it from 7pm with Sangam. Zee TV has Mamta in the same time band which I believe is doing pretty well. The channel has obviously weighed the pros and cons of placing Sangam in a slot like that. It is an experiment which we all hope will pay off.

Why should viewers tune into Sangam? For starters, they should watch it because I am in the serial (laughs). Seriously, Sangam should interest viewers because of the novel plot and the fresh look and feel. And as I mentioned earlier, the story progresses in a definite direction. In fact, the first 200 episodes of the serial have already been written, which is unheard of in a daily soap.

Is Bollywood a possibility in the near future? I am definitely interested in films and have got offers from some good banners. However, films are not a possibility for the next two years because I am under contract with Fox Television for Sangam. I cannot take up any other assignments as long as I am acting in Sangam.

Fitness secrets of Chaitanya Chaudhary

Chaitanya Chaudhary talks about fitness and healthy living. Read on...
My workout regime'
I work out four days a week for close to one-and-a-half hours each day. I do a lot of cardio and concentrate on three body parts in a day ' from chest to back to biceps and so on. I fell ill sometime back and had put on a lot of weight. So after that I have been doing more cardio than what I used to. If at all I miss my workouts I make sure to do alternate things like cycling or climbing stairs and stuff.
My happiness quotient'
Spending time with family, friends and watching movies.
My daily diet'
I start my day with muesli, milk, boiled eggs or eggs in any form. I take carbs more during the first half of the day and reduce as much as possible as the day progresses. For lunch, it is two rotis and sabzi. Later I take juices, lassi, fruits and dinner normally includes soup, chicken and daal. I try to stick to this pattern as far as possible but sometimes it becomes really difficult when I travel. But there are always alternatives and there are restaurants these days that serve healthy food. I do take it easy at times but if I am determined to lose weight then I get conscious automatically. I mostly eat right and believe more in burning out whatever is taken. I make sure to balance it out and even if I tend to take it easy, I do not stuff myself. Sometimes you cannot be too strict with your diet and the body does require a balance of everything.
On a rainy day, my idea of a workout would be'
I prefer cycling indoors. I like the rain but working out in the rain may cause infections so I prefer doing different things indoors. But as far as possible I don't skip my workouts.
My idea of relaxation'
Meditating and watching television.
Size zero to you is'
It is a new concept and I feel it is an unnecessary thing. By starving, it is like injuring yourself rather than doing any good to your health. I feel eating right and working out regularly is the perfect and only way of staying healthy, fit and fine.
I crave for'
I am not that big a foodie but I do crave for vada pav at times.
A lifestyle change I'm trying to make'
Nothing really'everything is going great.
Fitness mantra'
Eat healthy, work out well and keep a healthy state of mind.

Chaitanya Choudhary :

Chaitanya Choudhary, who plays Sagar in Star Plus's Sangam, narrates a rather embarrassing incident. He was shooting a scene when suddenly his towel came off. "There was one scene where I have to chase Ganga (Jeniffer). While running behind her my towel came off. But thank god, I was wearing my shorts," explains Chaitanya.

"It was the funniest incident. We rewinded that whole scene and shared a great laugh. Unfortunately that full episode was chopped off but I still can't stop giggling when I think of it," adds Choudhary.

Moral of the story never chase girls when you're in your towel

Acting is in my blood: Chaitanya

Chaitanya plans to stick to television.

Single but not ready to mingle, that's Chaitanya Choudhary for you. Interestingly , this isn't the only thing that sets this hunky beefcake apart from the madding crowd. His reluctance to enter the entertainment industry itself is a far cry from the 'I've always wanted to be an actor' monologue one hears so often.
So acting for Chaitanya "happened by chance" and his success as a model and dancer is "thanks to (his) friends" ! This qualified MBA, was the third runners-up in a popular manhunt contest.

Friends galore

"It was always my friends who dragged me to these local fashion shows in the city. They were the ones who sent my photographs for the manhunt contest without me having a clue. When I came to know that I had been selected, I was utterly confused as I had been quite content working as a marketing executive in a private firm."

Actor, naturally

"I have been born and brought up in Mumbai. I used to act in plays in school. My father is a documentary filmmaker and my mom was a theatre actress, so you can say that acting is in my blood.
I completed my MBA because education had always been a priority for me. But I also believe that an actor is always born and cannot be made. Nowadays there are many youngsters who are getting into the television industry on the basis of their good looks, but they won't be there for long. Look at SRK, he's not good looking, but his talent has made people love him."

Love at Times Square

"I think career wise it was a wrong decision to accept Dev Anand saab's Love at Times Square. The movie was a disaster, but it helped me grow as an actor, because I got to learn a lot from the legend."

It's chemistry

"Surveen (co-star ) and I are only friends. We had great timing while working on Kahiin To Hoga . But our chemistry was restricted to the screen, there is no such chemistry off-screen . In any case, I'm not interested in anyone right now because I want to concentrate on my career. After a year or so I'll be ready to mingle!"

Quit please

"I quit Kahiin to Hoga because I felt that I was creatively blocked at that point in time. My character in the serial had nothing to do. I didn't want to be a piece of furniture for Ekta Kapoor. And that was the reason why I sought Ekta's permission to quit the serial."

The big picture

"Although every actor ultimately wants to do films, I don't want to go back to movies. I think I have had my share of them and I'd rather stick to the small screen. Television is big today."

Chaitanya Choudhry... Love at Times Square
Starring in the upcoming Dev Anand blockbuster, to hit theaters on New Year's Eve, Chaitanya chats with Nitin... PLUS - an Exclusive Breakdown of the film!
by Nitin Kalra

From ramp modeling to a career in an advertising firm and from tele-films as a child artiste to a lead role in Dev Anand's Love at Times Square, Chaitanya Choudhry has come a long way. This MBA from Pune's Institute of Management and Research carried himself from being rejected in Round I of the Gladrags Supermodel Contest to ultimately winning the Mr. Photogenic at the same event. Throughout, his determination and will to make it big in the glamour world kept him going. Just finishing the shoot for his debut film Love at Times Square, Chaitanya takes time out to talk to Nitin Kalra in his first ever interview about the film and his life as an actor.

Nitin Kalra: You have a brilliant academic record, then how did modeling and eventually acting happen?
Chaitanya Choudhry: I've always been attracted to acting. As a child I have acted in tele-films and documentaries and I also did a couple of serials. In College I did theatre and eventually the ramp sucked me in. I was fascinated by seeing people walk on the ramp and hence decided to jump on to it too!

NK: Winning the Gladrags Mr. Photogenic must have helped a lot, didn't it?
CC: I had gone to the Gladrags event just for the heck of it. I went there with no expectations and hence when I was rejected in Round I itself I wasn't too disappointed. But then one of the jury members felt I had the potential and told me to reduce weight and to get into shape. I got three months before I could take part in the competition and I worked out a lot in this time. Finally I entered the contest and won the Mr. Photogenic title. It certainly helped me since people around me began recognizing me by face.

"...when I was rejected in Round I itself I wasn't too disappointed."

NK: How did Love at Times Square happen?
CC: I was running around to the producer's offices with my portfolio when one fine day I got a call from Gladrags office that Dev Saab wanted to meet me. I walked in to his office without even knowing I would come out of it with a film on my hands. Looking at me and the five minutes conversation that followed with Dev Saab got me the break I was desperately looking for.

NK: How has the experience been working on the film with a legend like Dev Saab?
CC: It has been a learning experience for me all throughout the making of this film. Though I attended Kishore Namit Kapoor's Acting Classes, I really got the hands on experience when I started working on the film. Dev Saab is a great teacher and he gives ample time to everyone to adjust and be comfortable. I guess because he is an actor himself he knows the difficulties a new comer faces and hence is ready to adjust. No other director would give you so much freedom on the sets as Dev Saab gave us.

NK: You are also shooting for Kalpana Lajmi's Kyon, right?
CC: Yes I am doing the film where I play the son of a rich politician. The film is a murder mystery and revolves around these three guys who are in college and get into this murder case. The film showcases how their lives change overnight and how they cope with it. What attracted me to the film was the fact that it will provide me ample scope to perform. It isn't glamorous but the role is performance oriented.

NK: Are there any more projects that you are working on?
CC: Love at Times Square is releasing in December and Kyon will follow in May next year. I am on the look out for more projects where I can showcase my ability as an actor more than just being a good-looking guy.

Love at Times Square...Exclusive Preview

The film is based on the incident that happened in the life of Dev Anand. In his teens Dev Saab felt that he couldn't make money staying in India and wanted to go abroad. But fate had something else in store for him. However the lead character of Love at Times Square (Chaitanya Choudhry) does go to the US of A. He comes from a middle-class family in Punjab and wants to pursue his dream of making loads of money in America. However his parents cannot afford to send him there. His uncle sponsors his trip to America making all the necessary documents and giving him $2000 for survival. The hero lands up there, stays in a motel with a Gujarati couple and finds himself in trouble, as he is unable to find a job.

Dejected he goes to Times Square on New Year's Eve and meets the heroine (Ameesha Mukherjee) who has come there with her boyfriend. He becomes friends to them and they enjoy the eve together. Few days of struggle and the hero runs out of money. On shelling out his last $100 as rent, he sees an ad in the paper for an estate manager. He applies and gets it. He meets the heroine and her boyfriend again and becomes closer to the girl. He realizes there is something wrong with her relationship with her boyfriend. The love story begins. Who gets the girl? You will have to wait and watch, as Love at Times Square will hit cinemas across the world on New Year's Eve.

The film has been shot extensively in New York, New Jersey and San Francisco. Lucky Ali, Adnan Sami, Aadesh Shrivastav, Rajesh Roshan and Karthik Raja have contributed to the music of the film, which also has a surprise dance number by Salman Khan. This one will certainly be a film to watch out for!

Chaitanya turns 29 today !

Chaitanya Chaudhary aka Uday of the now-redundant Balaji serial Kuch Apne Kuch Paraye is all geared up to celebrate his b'day today.

"Normally I throw a party but this year I am busy shooting for Sangam. I will definitely go out for dinner with friends - basically hang out at our favourite joint and have a blast," laughs Chaitanya.

In his college days, his father had gifted him a bike and that is his most cherished gift till date. As for the most memorable party, a surprising birthday party was organized by his sister two years back.

One a rather nostalgic note he recalls, "A friend of mine flew down from Delhi. I went to pick him up and he started behaving strangely. First he asked me to come with him to some places and I just kept following him." Finally the friend told Chaitanya to take him home and when they reached home, the actor found all his friends waiting to give him a surprise. "My sister had planned it with my friend in such a way to keep me out of the house and arranged this party.

We had a blast,"says Chaitanya.

Here's wishing the actor a very happy birthday!
